AL Notes: Glasnow, Twins, Frazier

By Dylan A. Chase | September 1, 2019 at 12:32am CDT

Rays righty Tyler Glasnow seemed to be embarking on an uber-breakout campaign this year before being sidelined with forearm issues. The 1.86 ERA, 10.24 K/9 and 2.31 FIP marks he submitted in his first eight 2019 starts became the talk of baseball for a time and positioned Glasnow as the possible usurper of the Cy Young throne held by teammate Blake Snell.

Since hitting the injured list, Glasnow has embarked on a lengthy rehab that could culminate in the coming week. MLB.com writer Juan Toribio passes on that Glasnow will pitch two innings for the clubs Durham affiliate on Monday, whereafter the org will decide on the location of his next appearance (link).

To truly help a 79-58 team trying to break through the postseason barricades, Glasnow will need to be in top form when he returns to the team–a return that is expected to be in a short relief capacity. Still, this latest stop in his rehab suggests that Tampa could soon be making one of the most impactful additions of the AL playoff race this month. With tonight’s win over Cleveland, the Rays entered into a tie with Oakland for the second Wild Card play-in spot.

Two more notes from AL contenders…

  • Somehow, the Twins hit six home runs tonight and still lost a 10-7 decision to the lowly Tigers. However, this would be called “burying the lead” in journalism: the real story is that the final home run of the night–a blast off the bat of Mitch Garver in the ninth inning–brought Minnesota’s home run total to 268 on the year, setting a new single-season team record. Though this record doesn’t have obvious trade or free agent implications, it’s still an impressive mark for a team that was largely debrided for organizational inactivity this offseason. Amazingly, the club has already received 20-plus homers from seven different players, with 38 home runs coming from the catching position alone (which is itself a record for an American League team). It’s hardly a surprise that such a powerful club holds an 83-52 record and +172 Run Differential, not to mention a 4.5 game lead in the AL Central. The home run record was previously held by last year’s Yankees team.
  • Tomorrow will likely see social media ablaze with news of Sept. 1 roster call-ups, but word of one particular promotion stood out from the transaction morass today. Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier is a player of considerable pedigree who has mostly logged solid offensive results at the major league level (103 wRC+ in 392 career at-bats). Nonetheless, his team saw fit to demote Frazier to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre in June, sparking both trade rumors and reports that highlighted an organizational mandate to Frazier regarding his suspect defense. September hope will spring eternal for the 24-year-old outfielder, however, as it appears that the man known as “Red Thunder” will rejoin his big league bombers when rosters expand today.  Frazier, for one, is excited: “Honestly feels like the first time I got called up all over again,” Frazier told Conor Foley of The Times-Tribune in Scranton (link). While in Triple-A this year, the right-handed hitter produced a .244/.302/.431 batting line.

Trade Frazier this off season for a high ceiling young pitcher and one additional good prospect. Get rid of him, he really should not play with the Yankees.

It’s going to take more then Frazier and one good prospect to get a high ceiling young pitcher. I’m a Yankees fan and I like Frazier, but I don’t think he has the trade value some people seem to think he does. We’ll see about that once he goes back to producing at the plate in the majors like earlier this year and proves that he’s cleaned up his defense.

Yes, or they could just sign a FA pitcher. This is a good class with Cole, Ryu, Keuchel, Bumgarner, Hamels.

That’s way too much. Look at what was given up to get Verlander 1 non top 100 prospect in Jake Rogers, a 1st round pick who was in low A at the time in Daz Cameron and a talented but not all that impressive pitching prosody with little experience above high A.

Andujar is NOT a prospect. He’s had a full season at the mlb level. His injury shouldn’t hurt him going fwd and he has 4 years of control.

Unless you’re taking about a top 5 pitcher or a top 10 with 3 years of control left that feels like too much.

Despite their defensive woes both Frazier and Andujar would start somewhere on the field for most teams and if you look at the stats they’re are plenty of worse defensive guys in the league holding down a regular job and some of them are getting serious pay.

A high ceiling young pitcher sounds like somebody either in the high minors or just graduated to the major league team….unless we’re talking about a young Verlander, Cole, or Kershaw, doubt that it’s going to take multiple players and one good prospect to land him…..while pitching is valued, its very flukey and you really don’t know how promise is going to project into a major league rotation.
Frazier has proven he can hit, and if Castellanos can become beloved in a short period of time in Chicago with no proven defense over a major league career, then Frazier’s “suspect” defense isn’t going to stop another team looking for offense in the outfield either….For all you Frazier bashers like you know who!

See here the bias at full display. Most anti Yankee fans want to see Frazier moved for nothing and then excel so they can have a good laugh for once in their miserable lives. They set the bar sooo low saying he’s a .250 hitter and fail to mention his major league stats but when it comes to his defense they go right to his time in the majors but fail to mention the vast improvements he’s been making in the minors. Many columns have been written including the NY Post and on YES network they show the kid doing extra fielding drills everyday. Frazier has the ability and skill set. He just needs a team to give him a shot. But the anti Yankee homers on here just keep trashing him hoping that maybe he will have no value because of their meaningless words on this thread and then get dealt for nothing and excel. Not gonna happen.

I wish him well, but just don’t ever want to see him in Detroit. We need to build the team with above average defenders in the outfield.
Just mentioning this because I recall a lot of rumors or suggestions on this site about a potential trade to the Tigers during the season.

Those anti Yankee posters are actually angry Mets and Sox fans who pretend to support the Yankees. In fact they are just make believers—front runners who have a hard time accepting the Yankees success this year.

Today I LMAO at sucker GEE who’s been whining about Gardiners contract and performance.

GEE is a squeaky type—can you hear him suffering with Gardys home run that tied today’s Yankee game in the bottom of the 9th?

Or was it that he hit his 20th HR?

They should’ve moved him when he was hitting. What type of “high ceiling” prospect would you give up for a. 250 hitting outfielder with average power in a hitter friendly International League? I’m sure the Indians would like him…their outfielders can’t stay on the field.

Why do ppl choose to focus on the 50ish games in AAA vs the 50ish games he played in the majors before being sent down to work on his defense? He had 11 hrs and a slug% over .500 so he’s far from having average power.

Also, the International League is far from a hitter friendly league . Of the three AAA leagues the International League had about 20-30 more homers than the Mexican AAA league and about 800 less than the the true hitter friendly Pacific league. So of the three the International League was much closer to the league with the fewest homers.

Plain and simple Frazier needs to show improvement on his defense and cut down on strike outs but clearly his bat can play and is well capable of being a 25-30 hrs guy. It’s just a matter of giving him 600 AB and seeing what he can do over the course of a full season.

Quite the opposite actually. The Yankees were willing to trade him for Robbie Ray but the Dbacks wanted Clarke Schmidt and 2 other prospects as well so the Yankees walked away

No, you obviously root for another team as that was not the case what-so-ever.
The Diamondbacks got greedy in what they were asking for a middle of the road, pretty average pitcher and got nothing back except for that pitcher going on the IL.
