An offseason free of trade rumors swirling around right-hander Noah Syndergaard will almost feel strange at this point, but Mets general manager Brodie Van Wageen said in a conference call to address today’s dismissal of manager Mickey Callaway that the team will not trade Syndergaard or embattled closer Edwin Diaz this winter (Twitter link via The Athletic’s Tim Britton):
“Edwin Diaz is going to be on this team next year. Noah Syndergaard is going to be on this team next year,” said Van Wagenen. Notably, that was an unprompted assertion from the GM, who is entering his second offseason at the post.
Syndergaard has been a fixture on the rumor circuit for the better part of two seasons, as teams have persistently inquired about the right-hander’s availability amid postseason misses and uncertain offseason approaches. While most expected the Mets to take a seller’s approach at the 2019 trade deadline, though, Van Wagenen & Co. loaded up for the 2020 season with a surprise acquisition of Marcus Stroman. Today’s comments not only emphatically double down on the fact that the Mets view themselves as contenders but also preemptively put to bed any speculation about moving Syndergaard for MLB-ready help in other areas.
As for Diaz, the once-dominant Mariners closer looked like a potential change-of-scenery candidate after the 2019 season proved to be an unmitigated disaster. The 25-year-old’s strikeout percentage dropped from 44.3 percent in 2018 to 39 percent in 2019 as his walk percentage jumped from 6.1 to 8.7. But Diaz’s true downfall was his alarming susceptibility to the long ball. After allowing an average of just 0.61 homers per nine innings pitched with Seattle in 2018, Diaz’s HR/9 rate soared to an untenable 2.33 with the Mets in 2019. The flamethrowing righty maintained his velocity, but the uptick in walks and home runs serve as clear indicators of trouble locating the ball.
The bottom-line results — a 5.59 ERA, seven blown saves and an eventual removal from the closer’s role — were about as poor an outcome as one could’ve forecast following the trade that brought Diaz to Queens. However, it seems there’s no thought to parting ways a la Sonny Gray and the Yankees, as the Mets remain confident they can get Diaz back on track. He does have three remaining seasons of club control, so the upside with Diaz is enormous if he can right the ship. Syndergaard, meanwhile, is controlled through the 2021 season.
With both Syndergaard and Diaz seemingly written in ink on next season’s roster, the question for the Mets will become one of who’ll slot in alongside them. Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz and Stroman will join Syndergaard in the rotation, but with Zack Wheeler hitting free agency, the Mets will need to add a fifth starter (plus some depth to stash in the upper minors). That’s especially true given that Anthony Kay, perhaps the organization’s most MLB-ready rotation prospect, was sent to the Blue Jays as part of the trade to acquire Stroman.
In the bullpen, Jeurys Familia had a similarly disappointing year to the one through which Diaz struggled. Robert Gsellman had his own struggles before going down with a partially torn lat that ended his season. That trio will return alongside righty Seth Lugo and lefty Justin Wilson, both of whom pitched well, but the Mets will surely be in the market for some bullpen reinforcements once again.
Cubsfan0331
Ok lol
MrMet33
What’s so funny? We’re both watching other teams play this October. lol.
nemolee.exe
Did we expect them to be traded? NO.
MarlinsFanBase
On behalf of all Marlins and Phillies fans, thank you Mets for taking the attention away from our teams’ failures by continuing to make yourselves into the laughing stock of the NL East.
axisofhonor25
The only reason they are the laughing stock is because the Marlins perennial failures stopped being funny.
southbeachbully
@MarlinsFanBase
“Hello Kettle…It’s Pot”.
Steven Juris
Didn’t know the Marlins have a fan base. Unless you call the fans who dress up as empty seats a base.
dimitrila
Well they have that one guy in he orange jersey—but he seems to go to other teams’ games.
phenomenalajs
Great name. I guess you’re the only one if your handle is “MarlinsFanBase.” The Mets are not the laughingstock of the division. The division was very competitive. All teams except one were mathematically alive until the last two weeks of the season.
southbeachbully
@phenomenalajs What’s funny is the Mets were 13-6 vs the Marlins this year.
NewYorkMetropolitans
LOL what’s more embarrassing is that you think the mets are more embarrassing than the dumpster fire Marlins. As bad as they were in the beginning of the year, the mets turned it around. Your team is a mess and run by crook after crook after crook. Did Loria ever give back that money to Miami? lmao btw remember when the marlins traded away their best players for literally nothing? Your team is packed with bags of peanuts, like your brain is filled with.
Jorge Fernando
i have to admit i will love to see the Mets win two ships and then blow the team away…………………two rings are two rings!!!!, only 3 other teams have more than the marlins in the last 30 yrs, nobody will take away those two unique years that only other 5 have enjoy…
MarlinsFanBase
What’s funny is 2 championships through 27 seasons versus 2 championships through 58 seasons.
Oh my! The Marlins are in a championship drought! We haven’t won a championship in 16 years. I hope we don’t become one of those teams that doesn’t win a championship in 33 years and counting!
NewYorkMetropolitans
lol the year after winning your leaders blew the team up. God it’s sad to see someone so eager to talk smack about a franchise that has made it to the playoffs over the last 15 years. You’ve been basement dwellers for 15 years plus. 2 championships with stacked overpaid teams is nothing to cheer about. You should be embarrassed to be a marlins fan. Good grief. Mediocre come back btw. You fail at life on a molecular level
MarlinsFanBase
FYI…last time, we won in 2003. We didn’t blow the team up until the 2005-06 season.
I’ll be embarrassed as a Marlins fan any day over the embarrassment of being a Mets fan. We know what we are. You guys are just delusional every year as you get in line to drink the latest Kool-aid that the Wilpons and your homer beat writers serve.
Better to know that your team is a work in progress, while enjoying the best sport in the world, instead of continuing to be a lemming thinking that there is no cliff at the end of the journey or being the fly that thinks that he’ll have a better result with the light this time.
NewYorkMetropolitans
lol no. I dont drink the koolaid or read the bs that media brings. I watch the games and see it with my own eyes. You yourself are an embarrassment of a human being and need to comprehend your team will never be good. I’d rather deal with my garbage team than ever deal with the lowly marlins. Trash heap squad. Baby yankees. Jeters little goons. Dumpster fire extraordinaire. Trash franchise you love and you know the marlins are forever trash. Keep sipping that Haterade and typing from mommy’s basement.
MarlinsFanBase
Yeah, we’re trash forever.
1997…2003…???
1969…1986…???
Go get in the Kool-aid line when the Mets make their next managerial hire and their next wave of media hyped trades and signings this winter.
FYI…there are no basements in Florida. Something about being at sea level.
MarlinsFanBase
Awww, am I touching a sore spot?
Don’t worry. The Mets will live up to the hype…one day…eventually.
mredplays3b
…sorry, we can’t hear you talking from the basement. Come upstairs and chat.
jorge78
Children
please!
callingoutdummies247
At least the Mets have hype. The Marlins have nothing. No hype, no talent and no hope. It’s going to be a long rebuild, the rest of MLB will continue to laugh at Jeter and his crew
jt3z
Jesus Christ its like you both are fighting over who’s penis is smaller. Stop it its pathetic
prov356
Let’s get one thing straight Marlins and Mets fans. As an Angels fan, no one is more embarrassed than me.
dshires4
Mariners fan here. Pretty sure we’re entitled to a piece of loser pie.
Bart Harley Jarvis
I was quickly skimming through the comments, and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why you would mention fighting over Jesus Christ’s penis.
I took my time on my second read and I now get the gist of your comment. Thanks, carry on…
mredplays3b
So then, you haven’t been to your cavernous ballpark in 16 years? Some “fan” you are.
Show Me Your Tatis
Speaking as a fan of a third team, the Marlins suck now from a W/L standpoint but they at least have a plan and appear to be sticking to it. The Yelich trade didn’t work out, but they got value in all of their other trades from the Jeter era. Their future success depends on how well they draft in the next couple years. And they would do well to stop worshipping known murderer Jose Fernandez. BVW, on the other hand, appears to be throwing **** at the wall and seeing what sticks. The Mets might continue to have a better record than Miami for 2-3 more years but they won’t contend for anything until he is fired.
kingjenrry
It’s hard to see the Marlins being good in the next 4-5 years. On the other hand, the Mets’ young core seems to be improving – Rosario, Smith, JD Davis, Alonso, and McNeil all had great seasons and are under control for years. Nimmo ended the season strong, too.
Show Me Your Tatis
Those players are already here tho. Mets need to add if they want to contend.
xSpecBx
In my opinion, the biggest question mark will be if the Mets can continue to add payroll. They have a good young core with the names you mention, but taking on the Cano contract was a mistake and I don’t believe they have a particularly strong farm system. They either need to try and contend now or re-tool a bit and try to contend in a year or 2 by trading some current MLB talent (DeGrom, Thor, Stroman, etc.) for younger MLB talent or close to MLB talent. I find it hard to believe a contending team wouldn’t give you multiple high end, close to major league ready players for a guy like DeGrom.
MetsJets1
And had to trade away all the free agents you signed to win them the next year. Doesn’t look like you will be buying a championship again anytime soon. You know, you might have been able to win more and keep teams together if you had more than a couple dozen fans in that city. Maybe the others couldn’t make it being they are like 95 years old down there.
CharlieH
You’re annoying.
mredplays3b
Is finishing last in a division not funny?
kingjenrry
The Mets finished ahead of your teams. Not only that, but the Phillies signed Harper and still couldn’t finish the season above .500.
MetsJets1
Laughing stock? Really? We finished ahead of both of your clown teams and we did not pay anyone $300M to be a middle of the road player. Oh and our rookie just blew away tour $300M man who seems to care more about his hair than running out a ground ball. And who knows what there is to say about the Marlins. AAA or AA. Take your pick.
mustang66
$330 over 12 years for Harper. Sixto Sanchex an ace by 2021…check his stats and the Marlins also got back ome of the top 5 defensive catchers in baseball
.a future loogy and international money which now leaves 6 months of Realmito for all tha. You’re either going to need to pay Realmuto big bux at 31 or watch Miami feature your prospects.
As far as the Mets..we have a core with surplus. Just need Wheeler back a pen arm and a catcher to go with Ramos.
Come get us
joeyrocafella
Yeah, 10 games above .500 is “laughingstock” material, huh? you must be new to baseball, or you’ve followed the terrible Marlins for so long you’re just used to watching bottom-feeders play and think that it is normal.
jopeness
while this now seems legit. I think brody’s ego is going to have a negative impact on the mets long term. when to cut losses, sell high etc.. these types of things dont appear to play well to him. He’s more likely to double down on a bad hand than fold
southbeachbully
@jopeness W/ regards to DIaz, what would be the point of trading him now? His value is at an all-time low. Add to the fact that he’s still cheap and under control it’s not like he’s going to cost you much aside from a 25 man roster spot. It makes sense to keep Diaz. No one’s giving you anything meaningful back. And there’s a chance he can right the wrong and bounce back in 2020.
jopeness
oh I completely agree. those Diaz sellers are bad business men. I’m just saying Brodie will double down no matter what due to his ego.
MetsJets1
He still has a great arm. He needs to work on his mechanics in the off season and spring training and be able to replicate his motion consistently. If he does that they have him with 3 more years of control.
beerman
Well good to see one Marlins fan in here is passionate. I mean since when the Mets travel to Marlins Park there is double the Mets fans there than Marlins fans. Don’t worry, you’ll have a longer drought of winning a World Series than the Mets will.
kingjenrry
Brodie needs to get fired
Dutch Vander Linde
He also said the Mets where gonna be the team to beat in the NL East and look what happened.
kingjenrry
The craziest part about that is that an average GM could easily have taken the roster Brodie acquired and turned it into a contender. Despite the probable RotY and Cy Young, the third best rotation in baseball and the 2nd best offense in the NL, the Mets couldn’t even make the Wild Card.
MetsJets1
1 word – BULLPEN.
ok 2 words – BULLPEN SUCKS
Koamalu
Who put that bullpen together? BVW. He resigned Familia. He traded for Diaz. He signed Avilan.
All but Avilan will be back.
mistry gm
Ah the kiss of death. Good bye Thor, good bye Diaz.
bkbk
This dude is an egomaniac, why say anything at all? Isn’t committing to a plan irresponsible for a GM. Id love to see Mets fans riot, you guys got generational pitching talent and some good hitting talent, all at about the same time and you trash owner hired a trash GM and is working his tail off to destroy it all.
MarlinsFanBase
Mets fans will not do anything about this. They will complain, then jump right in line to get some more of the Kool-aid when the Mets PR team and homer beat writers serve it up for the Wilpons. Mets fans love them some Mets Kool-aid.
DSB Police
So, what Kool-Aid are we supposedly drinking? You seem to have bought in to the tear down that Jeter is overseeing? What makes you think it is going to make the difference? Because it’s Jeter? Yeah great players make great owners (Michael Jordan). Good luck.
MetsJets1
Really. The star player they got in return for one of their players, either Ozuna or Yelich, is their star center fielder hitting a buck 78. Should be a great future.
Lanidrac
Hmm, it’s unusual to see a GM flat out state that someone won’t be traded. Unless the guy is a franchise icon or has a full no-trade clause, you usually hear GMs hedge their bets a little by saying they have no plans to trade him unless they’re blown away by an offer.
lowtalker1
Bc he is worth less than he was 2 years ago.
FattKemp
Syndergaard’s career arc is trending toward that of a taller Chris Archer. If he doesn’t fix things next season, the Mets may want to consider selling high on the unwarranted hype behind what was a slightly below-league-average arm in 2019.
kingjenrry
As long as he’s healthy, he’ll be useful on his salary.
Koamalu
Syndergaard’s biggest problem is he has not stayed healthy. 2019 is the only season in his career when he didn’t spend time on the Injured List.
lowtalker1
Brodie keep digging your hole dude. You should have done a rebuild, which is what every other person that interviewed for the position said they needed to do, and you are the only one that said no. I like when the Mets suffer lol.
kingjenrry
That really doesn’t make sense, to be honest. Pretty much nobody except Cherington thought a rebuild was necessary. It doesn’t look necessary now either.
Nimmo, Conforto, Dom Smith, JD Davis, Alonso, and McNeil are well above average on offense. Rosario has improved significantly. The team has a rotation with deGrom, Syndergaard, Stroman, and Matz.
The real conclusion is maybe you’re not that familiar with the Mets’ roster. None of this is a defense of Brodie, who has been genuinely terrible.
lowtalker1
There is no way they can complete with the other 3 teams. Phillies nats and braves. You also got the Marlins who are building a power house through the system. Mets going to get left behind
wright1970
Really? we never have trouble beating any of those teams except the Braves!! They are the only team that has our number in the division(i think they won the season series 11-8) We have a good, young core of position players and a strong rotation. The Marlins have nothing and the Phillies have 1 good starter(Nola) and the Nats have 2 position players in Soto and Rendon(might be gone this winter) and a strong rotation like the Mets and a horrible bullpen. firing Callaway was a huge plus because he cost us at least 10 wins with his horrible decision making. Add a couple of relievers and we are in the thick of it for 2020!! TRUTH
Koamalu
Losing record against Atlanta, losing record against the Phillies. The Mets won exactly as many games as their run differential says they should have in 2019.
The Wilpon’s have said that the 2019 payroll was as high as they can afford and the Mets already have $15 million more than that committed for 2020. If you are a Mets fan, expect some trades of guys you like because your team’s payroll needs to come down.
Koamalu
The Mets have a mediocre at best farm system and their team is aging. Sherman, Rosenthal, and others reported that executives around the league felt the Mets needed to at a very minimum take a step back and retool with younger players. The smart move was a complete rebuild. BVW has consistently chosen to not do the smart thing.
MetsJets1
I agree with most yet you say Brodie was terrible yet 2 of the guys you praise were only on the team because of BVW.
Aaron Sapoznik
Then we will just have to wait until the summer trade deadline when the Mets will be hopelessly behind the Braves in the AL East while also trailing the wild card contenders by a significant margin. In the meantime, Van Wagenen better trade catcher Wilson Ramos this offseason if he expects to maximize Noah Syndergaard’s value by July 31st.
kingjenrry
The Braves are a great team. That said, the Mets have more talent than many seem to think.
Koamalu
Are you kidding? This season BVW forced Syndergaard to continue pitching to Ramos even though the results were clear,
MetsJets1
No they weren’t. They finally gave him his way and he throws a stinker with one of his preferred catchers. He just needs to learn how to be a pitcher.
Koamalu
2-14 with a 5.20 ERA with Ramos is not clear? He was 2-10 with Ramos at catcher coming into September.
Syndergaard pitched to someone other than Ramos twice in September. September 2nd to Rivera and September 29th to Nido. In both games he went 7 innings and gave up ZERO and 3 runs in those 2 games. In the game pitching to Nido he gave up just 5 hits in 7 innings and struck out 9. Far from a stinker.
The other 4 starts he pitched to Ramos and went 5 innings while giving up 4 runs in each game.
Mets fans need a dose of reality.
Show Me Your Tatis
Pitched to Nido on September 24th. Gave up 4 runs (all earned) in 5 innings. Pitched to Rivera on September 18th. Gave up 4 runs (all earned) in 5.2 innings. Wilson Ramos only caught Thor twice in September. On the 8th and on the 13th.
El Ruso
BroVDubs’ front office numbers seem to suggest a serious regression for 2020. How you can have a pitching staff like that, a guy like Pete Alonso, and still go limping into the postseason sunset is mind-boggling to me. DeGrom, Wheeler, Thor, Marcus… The sooner this joker is sent back to the agent frat, the sooner the Mets turnaround. BeerPong<MLB.
Scrap1ron
At least Brodie didn’t say “come and get us” this time.
jakec77
Means nothing. Frankly, I’d rather the answer be “We will look at all possible moves that improve our club”. But, whatever.
It’s always nonsense when a team says they won’t trade someone- everybody can be had for the right price. Alonso is clearly the most untouchable Mets, but we could all put together a ridiculous package that the Mets would have to accept if offered.
So, really, all he is saying is he doesn’t plan to sell low on either, and with the rare exception of Cashman and Sonny Gray last off season, who would ever announce otherwise?
Koamalu
Then the Mets can expect much the same as this year or worse for years to come.
Koamalu
But then BVW was stupid enough to force Syndergaard to continue to pitch to a catcher when those two combined for a 2-14 record and a 5.20 ERA.
So maybe he is stupid enough not to trade Syndergaard,
didi gregorious nose
He cant openly say they will be traded, think about it hed loose leverage. In public u say they’re not going anywhere to get a team to overpay
Koamalu
He also can’t say they won’t be traded. When they are traded what would be more of a knife in the back for Mets fans, saying “we will explore all options to make the Mets better in 2020” or saying “we will absolutely not trae Syndergaard or Diaz”?
MetsJets1
Dude, he just needs to learn how to pitch. Can you imagine Tom Seaver crying about his catcher? Give me a break.
I was in SF over the summer when the Mets were there. Their radio guy interviewed John Stearns. Stearns said he couldn’t believe it but as a rookie Seaver pitched to him and never shook him off. That is a guy who is just confident in what he does and obviously Thor is not.
Koamalu
Tom Seaver had a dedicated catcher with the Mets. Nearly every game he threw to Grote. They came up together and he was Seaver’s catcher until they were both traded. Stearns caught Seaver in 75-77. He also only caught him a few games each of those years.
gregstruth89
Dray. Mom says supper is ready
MannyPineappleExpress9
Translation: start the bidding war, and if the price is right, let’s make a deal.
didi gregorious nose
marlins fan what is with this infatuation with the mets were not even in the playoffs. U guys should type less and attend more home games. I live in orlando and I go to marlins park more often then these so called marlins fans living in little Havana. SMh. Last game I attended 16,000 fans 13,000 mets fans that’s a disgrace.
JoeBrady
I’m don’t think that’s much of a pronouncement. You’d be selling low on both of them.
jim stem
Syndergaard’s value is fading quickly. He’s turning into a whiny #4 starter with a home era of 5.00 who can’t hold a runner on and blames his catcher for his pitches missing the glove.
A good pitching coach should be able to fix Diaz if the problem is below his ears.
The Mets still have one of the best rosters on paper and need someone to find the right formula for consistency. Bad bullpen? How about challenging your starters to go more than 6 innings, expecting your 10th and 11th best pitchers to win it?
imthemanrightnow
I am amused at how anyone from florida could boast one iota i went to florida for a game. there were 1500 people in the stands. it was like a morgue. you have owners that win then sell off the team not giving any chance of winning for years. thats not a team i want to root for. sure im a mets fan, sure we only have won 2 world series. we have owner issues. but we don’t have the dead time a place like florida has. we go into a season at least with a shot. we get to have players around for a while, not just until they flourish like florida who then trades the players off. florida in general is a terrible baseball state with disinterested fans in both cities. they should both move.
megaj
Cubs will be shopping Bryant, pretty sure that statement would go out the window if the Cubs called. Cubs would need more than just Thor though..
Bart Harley Jarvis
Thor is a shoe-in for the HOF. 47 wins by the age of 27. Has anyone ever done that before?
TheLawAbides
Love the name and know I’m late to this comment but for a recent comparison through age 27 season.
Max Sherzer 52 wins 3.88 era
Thor. 47 wins 3.31 era
Is Sherzer h.o.f worthy?
Bart Harley Jarvis
Jacob deGrom is a shoe-in for the HOF. 66 wins by the age of 31. Has anyone ever done that before?
