Padres Managerial Search Down To Ron Washington or Jayce Tingler

By TC Zencka | October 19, 2019 at 9:10am CDT

Braves third base coach Ron Washington and Rangers Major League development coordinator Jayce Tingler are indeed the final two candidates to fill the Padres managerial vacancy, per MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell.

Washington and Tingler have been the rumored final candidates for a couple of days now, but Cassavell has added a note of finality to the search that could reach a conclusion shortly. The common bond here between Tingler and Washington is their relationship to Padres GM AJ Preller. Both connect to Preller’s time as an assistant general manager with the Texas Rangers.

There remains an outside possibility that a third candidate could enter the fray, but the odds are in favor of either Washington or Tingler becoming the next manager of the Padres. The Padres appear hopeful that one might even serve on the coaching staff for the other, and though a “team of rivals” managerial team makes sense on paper, at least one team official thinks this possibility is unlikely.

The crux of the difference between these two candidates appears to be a question of experience versus ideology. Tingler is a well-regarded, forward-thinking contemporary of Preller’s, whose front office background and comfort with analytics make him a good fit from a synergy standpoint. His coaching experience, however, is limited.

Washington has a suspect history with analytics, but he is a two-time pennant-winning manager and one of the most highly-regarded infield coaches in the league. If Preller and the Padres value a weathered hand to steer the ship, as has been rumored, then Washington fits the bill.

or hire them both Wahington as the Manager..Tingler as the Bench Coach “manager in training” as Washington gets what 3 yrs.. Both get promotions from current roles and they feed off each other perfectly

I like that idea but hard to say if either would go for it. Especially since Preller might be gone if 2020 is a failure.

So you think Washington would be ok with Preller basically saying we are hiring you for 3 years Max to train your replacement, Tingler, who will replace you in 3 years or maybe less if Washington does a good job training his replacement but the team does not win? Insane.

What is so insane? I would say anyone offered a 3 year contract that will likely pay them at minimum 2 million dollars along with other promotional opportunities to make even more will jump at the chance? Are you saying Washington would turn it down because he is not being named manager for life?

Are you a Connie Mack fan? Please tell me when any manager, or any coach in any sport is hired for life? People are given 3 year contracts that say they will hold the job for 3 years. Why on earth would anyone turn down all that money for the reasons you state? Who would say “no, I don’t want the job because you only want me, a man in my sixties, to have a 3 year contract.

As a die hard Padre fan I think its a nistake to hire either! It’s sad we cant get better candidates because Washington cant win in the post season and Tringle and too fresh and will have Andy Green syndrome. We wont win with either I’m afraid and Prellar will get canned next year! Think about it, anyone else rumored to want either one of those guys? There’s a reason, smh!

Didn’t Washington take Texas to two world series??

And at this point”get us to playoffs but not have a great playoff winrate” is far better than any of our previous “20 games below 500” seasons

Actually- Wash has not done anything half the coaches and managers past and present have not done. We just heard about Wash because he made a mistake on how to handle it.

Wash is an absolute brilliant baseball mind. He won as a manager and a coach. Had Wash not gotten in trouble he would be a Hall of Fame manager and viewed in the same class as Maddon. Look at his time with the Rangers and Maddon’s with the Rays. Wash won one more pennant. The issue is if his hiring will lead to questions that become a distraction. If they don’t- at a minimum Wash leads them to a second wild card.

Wash is not desperate but he does want to manage again. For the past 10 years he has talked about how he wants to return to Oakland and manage the A’s. He sees the Padres job as his path to that.

I will tell you right now- a press conference will be held Monday at 4 pm Pacific time. The Padres will announce they have signed Wash to a two year contract with an option for a 3rd year or a buyout. Total value of two years in 1.8 million. He will make $800 K the first year and a million the second year. The third year option will be worth 1.2 million if exercised and has a buyout of 200k. The total value of the deal could be 3 million over 3 years and guaranteed to be 2 million if he only lasts the two or is fired before then. He will also be paid for taking part in events and doing a weekly show on the teams radio network. He gets a car and a full medical package. The club will not be responsible for his housing outside of the normal moving expenses.

No decisions, I repeat no decisions will be made related to his coaches until the interviews for other jobs are conducted. This will have a great impact on who coaches where because if Gabe Kapler does not get hired he is number one on their wishlist to be 3rd base coach.

        This is a done deal.

Bring them both in Wash as Mgr. two yr deal and Tingler as bench coach, if Wash is fired in the first two yrs. bring Tingler in as the interim Mgr. and see how he does.. Personally I see AJ gone at the end of 2020 this team is in total disaray No SP per say, way to many K’s, lack of OBP, no late season hustle, OF is weak and C dept. needs to get someone on a consistent basis to hit above .270.

must not have watched C Francisco Mejia after assuming #1 C (2nd half) .305/.355/.571 .866 OPS or best hitting C in baseball in the 2nd half… if not for his injury that sidelined him for 4-5 weeks.. we wouldn’t be talking Hedges other than in possible trade or as a defensive specialist and backup to the gifted Mejia.. unless Preller goes Grandal and uses Mejia to get a TOR… look for Mejia to be the #1 C in SDP with Hegdes playing about 40% of the time.. Wouldn’t be surprised if Mejia is 3 WAR plus in 2020…. and there is even a better all around C just around the corner from the mlb in A+/AA C Luis Campusano

This team is horrible and if they were paid on performance none of them would make close to their salary except for yates and tatis (IL) again.

Hello Henry the last time I looked Mejia finished with a .265BA what’s so great about that his framing and defense were ok but nothing special, and of course he’s on the IL for five weeks even worse his OBP is in the low .310. would AJ go after Grandal we got rid of the guy for more than one reason and his new deal will probably be for four or five years, please give it up. He had a decent year but sure looked bad when he couldn’t catch those passed balls in the playoff, or maybe you didn’t see that… However your the expert so we’ll see come 2020. As it stands now this team without any major moves will still finish below .500. A minor league C is a suspect and at best a prospect until they can stick in the Bigs for at least four to five yrs. the percentage shows less that 18% do..

Haha why would Washington take the insulting 2 year deal making him a lame duck after one year and hire his obvious replacement as bench coach.

The players would wonder who is really in charge. The placeholder “manager” or manager “in waiting”

      Terrible idea

Wash will take any deal to get back at the age of 67. He’s desperate for a gig as Mgr again and the third yr should be an option if he gets the team to .500 or better in the second yr. his option kicks in for the third year, its called incentive motivated.

Padres should interview Astros bench coach Joe Espada for their managerial opening.

Espada is highly respected for his communications skills, teaching young players, his analytics etc.
Espada also formerly worked as Yankees 3B and infield coach
    and the Marlins infield coach.

Espada is a hot ticket in the managerial market with the Cubs, Giants, Pirates and others expressing interest…

There’s always the “hot ticket” but he’ll likely come and go as the rest.

Maybe because the padres haven’t contacted him . If they do he might think about the padres job

I doubt it if the Cubs want him he will have an offer in hand before the series ends or je may have it now. Espada is not turning down the job of managing the Chicago Cubs to be able to interview for the Padres.

That only happens if the Cubs pass.

Espada will get multiple offers and choose the best fit.
It does not have to be the Cubs.
          Cubs rotation needs major overhaul.
Cubs 3B is walking as a FA.
SS and other positions are not sure things anymore with decreased production.
Cubs cannot interview and/or offer during the WS.
It is against MLB Rules since Espada is working with the WS
          Astros right now.

the Mets are interviewing Skip Shoemaker (Pads coach) and you guys are worried at AJP .. I had Washington #1 .. (gotten to 2 WS hungry for a ship).. Maddon #2… Loretta 3 and KOTSAY 4… I had no idea who Tingler was… so my #1 choice still in play and I would be very happy with Washington as my Manager…

I am disappointed on several levels. First, if the Padres were serious about wanting to hire a manager with proven bench experience, I don’t understand why Tingler is even in the conversation. I am not saying he is incompetent, but this screams of Preller being willing to ignore the initial basic rules of the managerial search in order to hire someone he trusts. At the beginning of the search and on the back of Andy Green’s failures, it was decided that this clubhouse needed hands-on managerial experience. Tingler just doesn’t fit the bill.

Washington undoubtedly does, but I have never rated him as a manager. He seems stuck in the 80’s, unwilling to accept change and embrace the fact that the game has changed. At least he fits the bill, but he’s just a poor choice IMHO.

All of this is being made worse by the fact that in my opinion, the perfect candidate in Joe Maddon is currently available. The fact that he wasn’t even invited for an interview blows my mind.

Not convinced that Preller is the guy to take the Padres to the WS and win it.
Loaded farm and then he trades at least 2 very good young major league p[layers and prospects for a future question mark prospect?!

Now, Preller wants to hire a manager from guys he formerly worked with in the Rangers organization?!

Washington would be an OK choice, but he has never won the trophy as an experienced manager with a loaded Rangers roster.
The other guy is a lottery ticket with no major league managing experience like the guy he just fired.?

How about interviewing Girardi?! Schowalter?! Manuel?! Joe Espada?!

If Preller blows this hire then he could be the next one out the door…

Up to now, I was willing to give Preller a pass.

I don’t blame him for trying to compete when he first got here (and with the exception of Trea Turner, it’s not like we really gave up lots for the “stars” we acquired).

I also don’t blame him for the pricey extension to Myers and the the Machado and Hosmer contracts. Taken in isolation, they don’t look great, and we overpaid. But bad teams sometimes have to overpay to get some talent on board, and build on that. That’s what we did.

However, now is the time to contend. With the exception of 2B, I believe we have an infield of competent players. We’ve got some interesting rotation pieces and Balsley will piece together a bullpen. We need a reliable starter and some MLB-level outfielders. Do your job Preller, or lose it.
