Pitchers Recently Electing Free Agency

By Jeff Todd | October 22, 2019 at 9:56am CDT

Since the conclusion of the regular season, a number of players have elected free agency. That right accrues to certain players who are outrighted off of a 40-man roster during or after the season — namely, those that have at least three years of MLB service and/or have previously been outrighted. Such players that accepted outright assignments during the season have the right to elect free agency instead at season’s end, provided they aren’t added back to the 40-man in the meantime.

We already rounded up the position players. Now, here are the pitchers that have recently taken to the open market, along with their now-former teams (via the International League and PCL transactions pages):

  • Austin Adams, RHP, Tigers
  • Michael Blazek, RHP, Nationals
  • David Carpenter, RHP, Rangers
  • Rookie Davis, RHP, Pirates
  • Odrisamer Despaigne, RHP, White Sox
  • Ryan Feierabend, LHP, Blue Jays
  • Brian Flynn, LHP, Royals
  • Ryan Garton, RHP, Mariners
  • Sean Gilmartin, LHP, Orioles
  • Matt Grace, LHP, Nationals
  • Deolis Guerra, RHP, Brewers (since re-signed)
  • David Hale, RHP, Yankees
  • Kazuhisa Makita, RHP, Padres
  • Justin Miller, RHP, Nationals
  • Juan Minaya, RHP, White Sox
  • Bryan Mitchell, RHP, Padres
  • Hector Noesi, RHP, Marlins
  • Tim Peterson, RHP, Mets
  • Brooks Pounders, RHP, Mets
  • JC Ramirez, RHP, Angels
  • Erasmo Ramirez, RHP, Red Sox
  • Zac Rosscup, LHP, Cardinals
  • Chris Rusin, LHP, ROckies
  • Fernando Salas, RHP, Phillies
  • Brian Schlitter, RHP, Athletics
  • Chasen Shreve, LHP, Cardinals
  • Aaron Slegers, RHP, Rays
  • Josh Smith, RHP, Red Sox
  • Dan Straily, RHP, Phillies

Minor correction – Rookie Davis, RHP pitched for Pittsburgh & their AAA club, the Indy Indians.

He was not in the Cleveland Indians organization in 2019..

Bryan Mitchell, the RHP from the Padres is one reason to not trust Preller or the FO…

They took on Chase Headcase Hedley’s contract to acquire him and he had nothing. It seemed like Mitchell wasn’t interested in baseball.

Mine might be an impression from a single pregame but I really got that impression. If he had tools, with one of the better pitching coaches in the MLB, then something was wrong in the ol’ cabeza.

    Bad acquisition. Good riddance.

This whole deal would look completely different if Chase Headley was halfway decent that year. His spontaneous combustion left his price tag attached to Mitchell.

Would be different if they gave up something for Headley and Mitchell. They gave up Jabari Blash. A player that the Yankees traded to the Angels for a PTBNL and as far as I know, that player still hasn’t been named.

Padres essentially bought Mitchell for Headley’s contract. Padres felt that Mitchell was a potential starter and Headley could be flipped at deadline. So essentially the transaction cost the Padres $12.5M for 2 years of Mitchell. Not a good move, but relatively speaking a pretty minor one since it has zero impact moving forward.

Flushing $12M down the toilet is pretty stupid, regardless of how much perfume you spray around it. Mitchell had never shown anything in the majors and Headley was showing signs that he was over the hill prior to the trade.

        espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/22534857/yankees-trade-jab…

Seemingly it was for a PTBNL or cash. Presumably, the Yankees likely opted for the cash…though I couldn’t find a transaction related to that….

I think Dan Winkler is a Braves pitcher and not a Giants pitcher (unless there are two of them with the same name).

Same guy. If you click on the link it shows he ended the year with the Giants.

Dan Winkler was traded from the Braves to Giants at trade deadline when the Braves got Mark Melancon from Giants!

There’s an Austin Adams in Detroit’s system too. He was on their MLB roster for awhile in 2019. That link is going to the wrong guy! Here’s the correct one.

Not a compelling group. David Hale is one of the more interesting based on his increased velocity.

Does he still do it? I don’t know what his minor league splits look like, but his career numbers in MLB vs. Lefties is impressive while vs. Righties they are terrible. we are talking about 5:1 SO:W and 1:1 SO:W along with .570 OPS and .904 OPS.

If I was the Brewers I would try to sign Rookie Davis, Bryan Mitchell, Chasen Shreve and Blazek to minor league deals. I will go out on a limb and say that they would be a very good depth that actually can contribute.

As a Pirate fan I can tell you that Rookie Davis is clearly a AAA pitcher and will not help a ML team.

Then the Astros should sign him.
And there is always an exception to the rule.
Luhnow lucked out with Cole big time since the Yankees whiffed their golden opportunity.
Morton was hurt every year with the Pirates and his one year with the Phillies and to me did not seem to have his heart in the game.
They both benefitted by being on a good team with good coaches.
