Position Players Recently Electing Free Agency

By Jeff Todd | October 22, 2019 at 7:06am CDT

Since the conclusion of the regular season, a number of players have elected free agency. That right accrues to certain players who are outrighted off of a 40-man roster during or after the season — namely, those that have at least three years of MLB service and/or have previously been outrighted. Such players that accepted outright assignments during the season have the right to elect free agency instead at season’s end, provided they aren’t added back to the 40-man in the meantime.

Here are the position players that have recently taken to the open market, along with their now-former teams (via the International League and PCL transactions pages):

  • Jim Adduci, OF, Cubs
  • Aaron Altherr, OF, Mets
  • Rob Brantly, C, Phillies
  • Wilkin Castillo, C, Marlins
  • Isaac Galloway, OF, Marlins
  • Dustin Garneau, C, Athletics
  • Juan Graterol, C, Reds
  • Gorkys Hernandez, OF, Red Sox
  • Oscar Hernandez, C, Red Sox
  • Rafael Lopez, C, Braves
  • Deven Marrero, INF, Marlins
  • Peter O’Brien, OF, Marlins
  • Jace Peterson, IF/OF, Orioles
  • Yadiel Rivera, 3B, Marlins
  • JB Shuck, OF, Pirates
  • Jesus Sucre, C, Orioles
  • Blake Swihart, C/OF, Diamondbacks
  • Beau Taylor, C, Athletics
  • Charlie Tilson, OF, White Sox
  • Bobby Wilson, C, Tigers

That should be the name of the next Die Hard movie and Bruce Willis has to go undercover in a convent like Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act 2.

The convent is a front for a extremely overly complicated bank heist that they’ve been working on for year. The leader of the group is obviously Hans Grubers sister, wife, or mother.. McClains estrained wife of course has to join the convent and he’s there to talk her out of it where he finds out that not only are some of the nuns massive men, but they also have a armory that is the size of some small countries.

It ends with him telling the head nun she’s been excommunicated.

Maybe Swihart will be the next d’Arnaud for the Rays when they don’t want to pay him. Gotta keep the payroll under 70 mil!

He was outrighted to it, but because he’s previously been outrighted, he has the option to refuse it and go to free agency.

Devin Mesoraco still under the thumb of the Mets? That sure worked out well for all. Mets choose random hill to die on.

Only one who lost was Mesoraco. He didn’t want to abide by his contract and he had zero value anyway.

Well you have Marrero and Peterson for the middle infield, Rivera for thrd and apparently anyone can play first base, so I think it is covered.

If I’m one of these guys, I’m spending my entire off-season changing my swing. It’s time to hunt down Joey Bats’, JDM’s, Donaldson’s, or even LaStella or Sogard’s personal hitting coach.

I would like to see someone to just put Swihart behind the dish and let him concentrate on it even if he struggles some. Let him just settle in.Now the Brewers do need some depth up the middle like Rivera and Peterson. Be interesting if Austin sticks with the Brewers. If Brewers dont resign Moose which I believe they will, they should go after Matt Duffy for third base .
