Players Recently Electing Free Agency

We’ve seen dozens of players elect minor league free agency over the past couple weeks, and that has continued to be the case in recent days. We’ll round up a few more players who are hitting the open market here, courtesy of the Triple-A transactions trackers.

Players can qualify for minor league free agency in a few ways. The most notable of these include: players with 3+ years of MLB service time who have been outrighted off their teams’ 40-man rosters this season, players who have been outrighted off a 40-man roster multiple times in their careers, and unsigned players not on a 40-man roster who have spent parts of at least seven seasons on a minor league roster or injured list.

Marlins Designate Bryan Mitchell For Assignment

The Marlins are designating right-hander Bryan Mitchell for assignment, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald was among those to relay. The move creates an active roster spot for top pitching prospect Edward Cabrera, who has officially been recalled to make his major league debut tonight against the Nationals. Mitchell’s designation also creates a vacancy on the 40-man roster, which now sits at 39.

Miami selected Mitchell to the big league club last week. He’s since made two appearances, tossing four innings of two-run ball out of the bullpen. He struck out four batters while issuing one unintentional walk in that time. That brief showing marked Mitchell’s first big league work in three years, as he hadn’t made it back to the majors after struggling to a 5.42 ERA over 73 innings with the 2018 Padres.

In the intervening seasons, Mitchell has bounced around between a few organizations. He’s spent most of the past couple years at Triple-A, and that’s been true in 2021 as well. Mitchell signed with the Phillies and began the year with their top affiliate in Lehigh Valley. He was released with a 6.04 ERA and a mediocre 20:16 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 28 1/3 frames with the IronPigs. But Mitchell has looked better after landing with the Marlins on a minors pact. He tossed twelve innings of four-run ball with fourteen strikeouts and six walks for Triple-A Jacksonville to earn the long-awaited call back to the majors last week.

Mitchell will now find himself on waivers over the coming days. If he passes through unclaimed, he’d have the right to reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency because he has previously been outrighted in his career.

Marlins Select Bryan Mitchell

The Marlins are selecting right-hander Bryan Mitchell to the big league roster, relays Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald (Twitter link). Fellow righty Luis Madero, whose contract had just been selected on Tuesday, has been designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Additionally, infielder Deven Marrero has cleared outright waivers and been assigned to Triple-A Jacksonville, per the MLB.com transactions tracker. Marrero has the right to elect free agency, but he’s previously accepted multiple outright assignments this season, so it seems likely he’ll again report to the Jumbo Shrimp.

Miami signed Mitchell to a minor league contract a few weeks ago, shortly after he was granted his release from a minors deal with the Phillies. Mitchell struggled to a 6.04 ERA with the Phils’ top affiliate in Lehigh Valley, but he’s been far better in brief action in the Miami system. Since being assigned to Jacksonville, Mitchell has tossed twelve innings across five appearances, allowing four runs on ten hits with fourteen strikeouts and six walks.

That decent showing earns Mitchell his first major league call in three years. He began his career as a swing option with the Yankees, pitching with New York from 2014-17. He didn’t find a ton of bottom line success, but Mitchell posted gaudy groundball numbers and showcased plus spin rates on his curveball. That earned him a look in the Padres’ rotation to open the 2018 campaign, but he only managed a 5.42 ERA with a higher walk rate (12.8%) than strikeout rate (11.3%) over 73 innings that year. Mitchell was designated for assignment before the start of the 2019 season. He’s bounced around on a few minor league deals in the years since but hadn’t gotten back to the highest level before today.

Like Marrero, Madero has now been selected to the roster and designated for assignment four times apiece this year. He’s allowed seven runs over six innings between those big league stints. Madero has spent the bulk of the year in Jacksonville, working to a 3.07 ERA across 41 innings at the minors’ top level.

Marlins Sign Bryan Mitchell

The Marlins signed right-hander Bryan Mitchell to a minor league contract last week. He’s been assigned to Triple-A Jacksonville, where he made his first appearance over the weekend.

Mitchell pitched in the big leagues every year from 2014-18, spending the first four years with the Yankees before logging his most significant seasonal workload (73 innings) with the Padres in 2018. He flashed some intriguing raw stuff but generally struggled from a results perspective, managing a 5.15 ERA/5.20 SIERA across 171 1/3 cumulative innings. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since, bouncing between a few organizations on minor league deals.

The 30-year-old signed a non-roster pact with the Phillies over the offseason. He spent the year with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, tossing 28 1/3 frames of 6.04 ERA ball with worse than average strikeout and walk rates (15.7% and 12.6%, respectively). The Phils released him a couple weeks ago. Mitchell has worked exclusively out of the bullpen this season but has vast starting experience and offers the Marlins a high minors multi-inning relief/swing option for the stretch run.

Phillies, Bryan Mitchell Agree To Minor League Deal

The Phillies have agreed to a minor league contract with free-agent righty Bryan Mitchell, reports Jayson Stark of The Athletic (via Twitter). He’ll presumably be invited to big league Spring Training.

Mitchell, 29, hasn’t appeared in the Majors since a disappointing stint with the Padres in 2018. The Friars effectively purchased Mitchell from the Yankees, agreeing to take on the remainder of Chase Headley’s four-year contract in order to land four years of control over Mitchell. The hope was that Mitchell could function as a viable fourth starter in San Diego, but he was hammered for a 5.42 ERA and an even uglier 5.89 SIERA with more walks (43) than strikeouts (38) in 73 innings of work. Headley, meanwhile, was released in mid-May after 60 plate appearances.

In 2019, Mitchell was dropped from the Padres’ 40-man roster prior to Opening Day. He didn’t fare well in Triple-A that year either, allowing more than a run per inning over 44 frames. Prior to that implosion in 2018-19, however, Mitchell had showed some promise. He carried a 3.18 ERA in just shy of 200 innings at the Triple-A level and had some decent big league outings, albeit without consistency (4.94 ERA through his first 98 1/3 MLB frames).

Mitchell latched on with the White Sox for the 2020 season but didn’t earn a promotion from their alternate site prior to being released in late August. Overall, he carries a 5.15 ERA and a nearly identical 5.20 SIERA in 171 1/3 big league innings. Mitchell doesn’t miss bats (13 percent strikeout rate) but does carry a 50 percent ground-ball rate. Philadelphia skipper Joe Girardi surely knows Mitchell well after managing him for parts of four seasons with the Yankees, which surely played a part in this match.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has spoken recently of bringing in some veteran rotation depth on non-roster deals, and Mitchell gives them one such player. It’s certainly possible that further additions along these lines will be made in the weeks to come as more experienced starters ultimately settle for lesser deals with Spring Training looming.

White Sox Release Bryan Mitchell, Adalberto Mejia

The White Sox made a few moves Monday, James Fegan of The Athletic relays. The club released right-hander Bryan Mitchell and lefty Adalberto Mejia, and it added southpaw Kodi Medeiros and RHP Danny Dopico to its 60-man player pool. Medeiros and Dopico will report to Chicago’s alternate training site.

Mitchell and Mejia were fairly notable prospects in the past (the latter cracked top 100 lists), but neither has made much of a mark in the majors thus far. The 29-year-old Mitchell logged a 5.15 ERA/5.05 FIP with 5.36 K/9 and 4.57 BB/9 across 171 1/3 innings between the Yankees and Padres from 2014-18. After spending all of last season with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate, Mitchell joined the White Sox on a minor league contract in January.

Mejia, 27, was another January minor signing for Chicago. He combined for 154 innings among the Twins, Angels and Cardinals from 2016-19, during which he recorded an identical 4.62 ERA/FIP and notched 7.4 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9.

Medeiros, whom the Brewers took 12th overall in the 2014 draft, became a member of the White Sox when they acquired him for reliever Joakim Soria in 2018. The 24-year-old Medeiros struggled last season in Double-A, where he recorded a 5.10 ERA/5.45 FIP and walked 5.53 batters per nine in 83 frames.

Dopico was an 11th-rounder of the White Sox in 2015 who spent all of last season at Double-A and fared rather well. Despite an ugly walk rate (5.03 BB/9), he wound up tossing 62 2/3 innings with a 2.59 ERA/2.98 FIP, 10.48 K/9 and a 51.5 percent groundball rate.

White Sox Announce 60-Man Additions

The White Sox announced the addition of 16 players to their 60-man player pool Tuesday. They’ll all head to the team’s alternate camp site in Schaumberg, Ill. Today’s additions include (* = non-roster invitee):

As Opening Day draws nearer, the White Sox will option additional players to their alternate camp site. There are currently 43 players in big league Summer Camp with the South Siders, and they’ll need to trim that number to 30 by the time the opener rolls around.

Today’s list of additions contains several notable names, including 2020 first-round pick Garrett Crochet, whom the Sox selected 13th overall out of the University of Tennessee. Farm director Chris Getz isn’t ruling out the possibility of Crochet making his MLB debut sometime this year, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score tweets.

Getz also spoke about another recent White Sox first-round pick in Zack Burdi, whom they took 26th in 2016, saying (via Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times): ’We hope to build off how he finished major league camp. It’s the best we’ve seen him in a while. His last couple outings were very encouraging. It’s a special arm.”

Significant injuries have prevented the hard-throwing Burdi from realizing his potential or even reaching the bigs since the White Sox drafted him. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017, barely pitched the following year as a result, and then succumbed to a ligament tear in his patella last season. Burdi’s still a well-regarded relief prospect, though, and may have a chance to factor into Chicago’s bullpen this season.

White Sox Sign Bryan Mitchell To Minors Deal

The White Sox have signed right-hander Bryan Mitchell to a minor league contract, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter link).

Mitchell spent 2019 in the minors, after seeing at least a bit of MLB action in each of the previous five seasons.  Even with the caveat that 2019 was the most hitter-friendly season in the history of Triple-A baseball, Mitchell’s results weren’t good, as he posted a 9.41 ERA, 7.0 K/9, and 5.7 BB/9 over 44 innings for the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate in El Paso.

Chicago represents a fresh start for Mitchell, who has shown flashes of promise of his short big league career but has yet to deliver consistent results over his time with the Padres and Yankees.  San Diego acquired Mitchell in the 2017-18 offseason, as part of a trade that saw the Padres agree to absorb the remainder of Chase Headley’s contract as the price for getting a controllable young arm in Mitchell.  The gambit didn’t work out for the Padres, as Mitchell had a 5.42 ERA over 73 frames (starting 11 of 16 games) for the club in 2018.

Pitchers Recently Electing Free Agency

Since the conclusion of the regular season, a number of players have elected free agency. That right accrues to certain players who are outrighted off of a 40-man roster during or after the season — namely, those that have at least three years of MLB service and/or have previously been outrighted. Such players that accepted outright assignments during the season have the right to elect free agency instead at season’s end, provided they aren’t added back to the 40-man in the meantime.

We already rounded up the position players. Now, here are the pitchers that have recently taken to the open market, along with their now-former teams (via the International League and PCL transactions pages):

Padres Outright Bryan Mitchell

The Padres announced today that righty Bryan Mitchell was outrighted to Triple-A. He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment recently.

Since he’ll remain in the organization, Mitchell could yet provide the Friars with a return on the investment they made in acquiring him in December of 2017. To gain the rights to Mitchell, the San Diego organization took on a reported $13.5MM in obligations to Chase Headley (his 2018 salary and half of a $1MM assignment bonus), who ended up being dropped early in the season.

Mitchell hadn’t found MLB success when the San Diego organization picked up him up from the Yankees, but he had demonstrated some intriguing skills. The Pads hoped that his mid-to-upper -nineties heater, in combination with a cutter and curve, would allow him to become a quality big-league starter. Mitchell impressed at Triple-A in 2017, recording a 66:13 K/BB ratio and 55.4% groundball rate while allowing only one home run in 63 2/3 innings over 13 starts and one relief appearance.

But the struggles in the majors have continued unabated. In total, Mitchell owns a 5.15 ERA with 102 strikeouts and 87 walks in his 171 1/3 total frames at the game’s highest level. Now closing in on his 28th birthday, he’ll need to reestablish himself to earn his way back onto the 40-man roster.
