Mariners Sign Patrick Wisdom To Major League Deal

By Steve Adams | November 27, 2019 at 2:12pm CDT

The Mariners announced that they’ve signed infielder/outfielder Patrick Wisdom to a Major League contract. Seattle’s 40-man roster is ow up to 39 players.

Wisdom, 28, has minimal MLB experience, having appeared in 32 games for the Cardinals in 2018 and nine games for the Rangers in 2019. He’s a career .224/.306/.408 hitter in 86 MLB trips to the plate, but the former No. 52 overall draft pick (Cardinals, 2012) has a solid track record in Triple-A. Wisdom has played in parts of four Triple-A campaigns and posted a .252/.328/.478 batting line with 82 home runs in 1674 plate appearances.

Most of Wisdom’s career has been spent as a corner infielder, but he also appeared at all three outfield positions with the Rangers’ Triple-A club last season. He also has minor league options remaining, so the move to get him on the 40-man roster is likely more about adding some versatile depth with power upside — he hit 31 home runs in 107 Triple-A games in 2019 — than it is about penciling him in as a lock for the 2020 roster.

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not serving it as one.

That’s the third surprising major league deal they’ve already given out. Hope it turns out good for them.

Yeah, this is the weirdest to me but I think Dipoto is just trying to stockpile upside so that when Kelenic, Rodriguez, Gilbert, etc. are ready to join the rest of the young core there may a cheap, strong supporting cast. I’m not mad about it.

I’d be surprised if P Wisdom even plays for the Mariners- surely he’ll be suiting up for the Rainiers. He must be insurance in case Seager has another lengthy injury.

Or if he’s got a deal lining up for seager.

As much as I would like to see someone take Seager off our hands, it probably won’t happen unless we pay off most of the rest of this contract. He has a clause in his contract that if he is traded, he gets another guaranteed year on his current deal. So, it is going to be a long shot

I don’t understand why so many Mariners fans want rid of Kyle Seager. He plays good defense (ask Paxton about!) has an accurate throwing arm, he’s going to give you 50+ XBH’s, about 75-80 RBIs and up until the start of 2019 he was rarely injured. He’s really only had one bad yr- 2018 even then he had 59 XBH and 78 RBIs. I feel like some ppl think he’s our version of BAL’s Chris Davis. Besides It’s not like we have a better 3B coming up.

Majors contract at the league minimum is nevet a bad idea for a team with 40 man space, unless you expect to need said space later.

He can be easily cut and possibly passed through waivers. I’m not the least bit worried about the 40 slot.

While he struggled to make the Ranger roster he just couldn’t get that bat going. Glad he was removed to the farm.

No defensive value anywhere, strikes out a ton; a RH Volgleback (sp) that knows where the OF is, even if he can’t play there. . That said, if you have the slot, the power is interesting. A 26th guy on your roster till a better one comes along. And he has options.

Eh I dunno if he’s worth a guarantee, but I guess not a bad depth option. Braves, White Sox, Padres & Mariners have been pretty active early on. Let’s go Phils, give me something to be excited about!

I smell a trade coming with multiple players moving away from Seattle! This move is suspicious to me because we have 3 utility infielders currently on the 40 plus our outfield is already way to full. Dipoto has something brewing, I’m sure of it!

Wisdom has played mostly 3B in AAA. He has a AAA 3B fielding percentage of .939, which is Awful…

Narvaez will be gone sooner than later, I expect them to move on from Santana one way or the other, and I’m sure they’d like to move Dee somehow. The roster space will not be hard to come up with and I agree, I think the last two guys will only bring back minor league flyer return.
