Mets Sign Chasen Shreve To Minors Contract

By Mark Polishuk | November 21, 2019 at 2:59pm CDT

The Mets have signed left-hander Chasen Shreve to a minor league deal, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link).  The contract contains an invitation for Shreve to attend the Mets’ big league Spring Training camp.

Shreve appeared in only three Major League games in 2019, tossing two innings out of the Cardinals’ bullpen.  The southpaw had totaled only 16 2/3 frames since being acquired by St. Louis from the Yankees in July 2018 — a swap now much better known as the Luke Voit-for-Giovanny Gallegos trade.  Shreve’s brief tenure with the Cards includes two outright assignments off the 40-man roster, and he elected to become a free agent this offseason rather than remain in the St. Louis organization.

Over 203 2/3 MLB innings, Shreve has a 3.71 ERA and 10.3 K/9, though he has been prone to homers (a career 1.6 HR/9) and walks (4.5 BB/9).  He also has pretty even career splits against both right-handed and left-handed batters, making him perhaps more of an intriguing southpaw bullpen candidate than other lefties since the three-batter minimum rule will be coming into play in 2020.

Shreve’s lackluster 2019 aside, his track record is certainly interesting enough to merit a look in Spring Training, especially for a Mets team that is looking for all sorts of bullpen help.  In particular, a second left-hander to pair with Justin Wilson stands out as a particular need.  Of note, Shreve and new Mets manager Carlos Beltran are former teammates, as both played together for the Yankees in 2015 and 2016.

On a minor league deal, this is a solid pickup.

Sorry Mets fans. He is terrible. It’s not a solid pickup. When he came back not an extra inning game you could just turn the tv off when he was a Yankee.

No need to say you are sorry Oxford. The Mets love to go CHEAP. In Mets fans’ speak it is solid. They can talk all Hot Stove about picking up a great Yankee pitcher.

Plus this freebie counts against the
Number of moves that Mr. Smooth GM can make since he is overdrawn in his Citibank ATM card.

It is still unfathomable that Domingo German has yet to be arrested by authorities. How can Steinbrenner/Cashman/Boone in good conscience still consider a potential contributor to the team? At what point are they themselves implicated as bystanders of domestic violence?

implicated themselves? a bit severe is it not? the again, given your name, this hostility towards the Yankees is unsurprising. what a heavy charge to levy simply because one works for a rival team.

How does one find himself “implicated” as a bystander of domestic violence?

So the owners, General Managers, and Managers of every team with a DV offender should all be held personally accountable and “implicated” as bystanders of DV? Are you nuts or just unstable? The only person implicated is the offender himself. And every person, every DV offender, deserves a chance to re-habilitate themselves. Anything less is un-American, frankly. And I say this as someone who works at a DV shelter… Criminy I have never heard such nonsense.

Here’s a question: have any baseball DV offenders become repeat offenders? I don’t think so. That’s a good thing, to see them succeed at reforming their behavior. Yet some people, like mimmo, out of personal bias, would like to see them and their owners, general managers and managers driven out of society…

Does every Employer get implicated as bystanders of domestic violence? What does that even mean? Something tells me we have a court system for that.

That is likely why they haven’t done anything. If you release a guy, then a week later he is exonerated, you look foolish and lose a guy for nothing. He signs with the Astros and makes your opponent even better. They can send him to the minors and punish him that way I guess.

I would also take a flyer on Cortes Neste (?) the lefty the yanks cut. Sorry I don’t know the name I read about it 12 hours ago. His stats and age were something I would take a flyer on

I don’t really understand fringe type major league players accepting minor league deal this early in the offseason. Maybe Chasen Shreve is not the best example since he is a little less than fringe, but the point remains. I totally get taking what you can get in February, but it’s seems too early to settle right now.

I think he figures he’ll make the team out of ST. If he has a pulse he’d be an improvement over last year’s lot.

Not bad. Good depth option. I anticipate quite a few of these type of bullpen arms signed by the Mets to minors deals. I mean there are literally 5 openings assuming Lugo becomes the 5th starter
