Phillies Release Jose Pirela To Play In Japan

By Jeff Todd | November 1, 2019 at 2:09pm CDT

The Phillies have announced the release of utilityman Jose Pirela. He intends to pursue an opportunity in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.

Pirela landed with the Phils in the middle of the 2019 campaign after being designated by the Padres. He appeared briefly down the stretch but obviously did not make enough of an impression to make himself a significant part of the team’s plans in 2020.

While he had quite a productive showing in the big leagues in 2017, Pirela fell flat in a longer look the following season. He did post big numbers at Triple-A this year, with a .327/.376/.596 batting line in 372 plate appearances.

was kinda hoping we’d hold him until we could get a better bench option.

Welp, that takes the roster down to 43. Only 3 more that have to go by Monday.

there’s no shortage of options at least. i also hope they look into a Rule 5 pick with the expanded rosters. not a lot of names needing protection this year.

It’ll be interesting to see what the do with the draft and who they protect.

Like I mentioned, they have to get down to 3 by Monday according to the PI. Would not be surprised if one is Odubel. Even though they can’t cut him for the DV in Atlantic City, his numbers were so bad they can justify it under “Baseball Reasons”

Anyone is a better bench option than him.

Sean Rodriguez and Longan Morrison pretty much says it all.

Is it bad I didn’t know he was on the Phillies?

Considering your name, you probably shouldn’t feel TOO awful.

I remember how frustrated Padres fans were on these boards when they kept bringing him back.

      It was incredibly frustrating.

He’s a AAAA type player who got hot in the second half of 2017 so they gave him almost 500 ABs in 2018 instead of letting their mlb ready prospects have those ABs.

He’s not a bad guy or anything, it’s just there was no reason for him to take playtime from Renfroe, Reyes, and Urias and he ended up taking those ABs and accumulating -.8 fWAR in 2018 while he did it. I think it made Padres fans hate Andy Green too because he was the one seemingly doing it.

Looking at RosterResource, they don’t have to protect more than 3 or 4 guys from rule 5. But that means they still need to drop 6 or 7. Gambia, Morin,Parker are 3 easy ones.

yes that is a good thing, and there are options to drop, so things are not too hard.
