Padres To Sign Kyle Barraclough

By Jeff Todd | December 17, 2019 at 6:16pm CDT

The Padres have agreed to a minors deal with righty Kyle Barraclough, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi (via Twitter). It includes an invitation to participate in the MLB side of spring camp.

Barraclough has at times tantalized with his talent as a late-inning reliever, including a run of success to open his career with the Marlins, but he has been wholly inconsistent. He spent much of 2019 with the Nationals, who jettisoned him after 25 2/3 innings of 6.66 ERA ball.

After landing with the Giants, Barraclough allowed only a pair of runs in eight innings. But he also issued nine walks to go with ten strikeouts, continuing a career-long battle with free passes and convincing the team to allow him to reach the open market at season’s end. Now, the division-rival Friars will take a low-risk shot at getting Barraclough back to being an effective hurler.

Other teams are bringing in some decent SP’s or relievers signed to minor league contracts with an invite to ST, where’s the ones were bringing in?

Man where were you at on this guy Cubs? He was Hader 1.0 before Hader. Of course, his arm has fallen off since then, but nice low risk move here Id say.

Padres were never going to match what the Yankees gave Cole and the Strasburg contract is going to look like a massive overpay in the end.

Padres already overpaid for Manny Machado. I’d say he’s a good major leaguer. Not a superstar by any means.
He plays for himself and not the team. He only hustles when he wants to, I’ll take a bunch of hungry rookies over him any day !! San Diego, I would eat most of his salary just to pawn him off on some poor sucker. Just not the Giants!,finally we’re going to let the young guys play and see what we have going forward.
And yes I’ve seen Machado play in person a couple of times.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Wrong, wrong or completely off base. From a pads perspective i wish nothing but the worst in the standings for the giants and any other ML for that matter. Take all our bad players …

EZ buddy, Manny will hit 35 bombs and 100 RBI’s in today’s market he’s worth his salary.

The “hungry rookies” experiment has never worked with SD. Time for pros.

It worked pretty well with Tatis, Paddack and Urias.

His HR/9 skyrocketed last year, so you bet he’d want to go to SD.

He’s a quality guy if you get the 2015-17 version of him.

For the record: Kyle Barraclough actually had a 30/10 K/UBB (which I prefer because intentional walks are a manager’s decision). And that ratio is actually tolerable.

Check the stats for the Padres Starters
once Lamet and Richards joined the rotation.
Remove Lauer…add Davies….add innings to Paddack/Lamet/Richards and this rotation is at least slightly above average.
No need to add long term Starters with Gore and Patino 6-8 months away.

Probably an accurate description of where the team is right now, but Preller still has 3 months to add to it.

Besides, winning baseball games isn’t all about pitching.

I am all for getting additional starting help, but that incoming pitcher would have to be a true ace (so probably via trade, as I don’t see SD outbidding everyone for Ryu).. I just don’t see the point in bringing in a number 2 or 3, when we’ve got 2 or 3 of those already, and plenty of depth options.

Either find the right trade for the right ace, or stand pat with the rotation and invest in bats and another reliever.

        • nowheretogobutup

If you stand pat with our SP as is this team will finish no higher than fourth place below .500 and AJ is history, see ya

Need a good SP, veteran who can show these rooks the ins and outs. Nothing like experience when Gore and Patino are ready we’ll be firmly entranced in last place AGAIN

I have been a suffering San Diego sports fan since the 1960’s. They call it Americas Finest city. Propaganda. It’s a dead end where sports are concerned. Good professional athletes come here to become mediocre. Watch and see what happens to Machado. Watch and see what happens to this latest group of prospects.
