Minor MLB Transactions: 1/30/20

By Connor Byrne | January 30, 2020 at 9:40pm CDT

The latest minor transactions from around the majors…

  • The Athletics announced the signing of right-hander Shohei Tomioka to a minor league pact earlier this week. The agreement doesn’t include an invitation to major league spring training, per John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. The 23-year-old Tomioka is coming over from Japan, where he pitched with an independent-level team – not in the country’s top league, Nippon Professional Baseball. He owns a four-pitch repertoire and can hit 92-95 mph with his fastball, according to Shea.
  • The Padres have signed left-hander Hector Hernandez to a minor league contract, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. He’ll be at minors camp for the Padres. The 28-year-old Hernandez is a veteran of three MLB organizations (the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Indians) who debuted in the pro ranks back in 2009 but still hasn’t reached the bigs. To this point, Hernandez has maxed out at the Triple-A level, though he has only thrown 9 1/3 innings there. Hernandez spent the majority of last year as a member of the Indians’ High-A affiliate, with which he amassed 44 2/3 frames of 2.22 ERA pitching and posted 10.07 K/9 against 3.02 BB/9.

Can’t lose on a LH RP, could be a sleeper, never know. Just don’t trade the farm for Betts please, he’s a one yr rental. Rather keep Myers and play him part time against LH pitchers only.

Interesting move signing Shohei Tomioka out of Japan’s independent league kind of like what happened with Shumpei Yoshikawa this last offseason and he did great in 2019 so this should be a good investment.

Do the A’s actually have scouts trolling the Japanese independent leagues? Man, that’s thorough…..

In the past, yes, but I think the Dodgers have lapped them on “minor transactions” after taking Muncy from them.

Wasn’t Muncy a free agent when he signed? Every team in baseball passed on him after being put on waivers even the dodgers passed on him . So i wouldn’t brag about getting extremely lucky with that pick. up a AAA filler.

Too bad the A’s have one of the cheapest owners in baseball

A’s have a team already. No need to go out and get free agents.

Hernandez being a LH could be a good pick up, we’ll see what happens in ST, I hope the Padres do not give away four players for Betts on a one yr rental, no guarantee this will get us in the playoffs, it comes down to SP. I’d play Myers only against LH pitchers does well on that side not good with RH pitchers. I hope the FO keeps a close leash on AJ, let’s not sale the farm, if the Doyers want Betts then let the Doyers have him.
