Orioles Designate Eric Hanhold

By Jeff Todd | January 7, 2020 at 12:42pm CDT

The Orioles have designated righty Eric Hanhold for assignment, the club announced. His roster spot goes to infielder Jose Iglesias, whose signing is now official.

Hanhold never made it into an O’s uniform before he lost his 40-man spot, though it’s still possible he’ll end up with the organization if he clears waivers. He was claimed from the Mets in September.

Outside of a three-game MLB stint in 2018, Hanhold has plied his trade in the top reaches of the New York farm since coming over as the player to be named later in the trade that sent Neil Walker to the Brewers. Hanhold pitched to a 3.84 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 63 1/3 upper-minors innings in 2019.

I don’t know who would be DFA’d if we made any other major league signings at this point. My best guess would be Evan Phillips or Austin Wynns. This was the last obvious decision.Considering that the O’s intend to give David Hess a chance to make the rotation this spring.

They intend to give Hess a chance for the rotation. My guess next up would be Phillips.

Probably so. They kept Cody Carroll on the 40 man throughout last season despite being injured. I’d imagine he’s safe. I think Wynns is right there though—last option year and Sisco and Severino are here.

Pat Valaika…eight outfielders (per m.orioles.mlb.com/roster/) seems like t00 many to carry but picking one to DFA is difficult

Wilkerson is a natural infielder and Trey Mancini is a 1B. So that 8 outfielders thing isn’t really a constraint. DJ stewart is going to be placed on the 60 day DL as he won’t be ready for opening day. And McKenna isn’t major league ready. Doubt any of those guys go unless a legitimate outfielder is signed.

Pat Valaika might go at some point—But he’s The logical backup SS with Richie Martin likely to go to AAA. I’d put Phillips then Wynns as the next two. Then I’d go Valaika or Wilkerson after that. But we’ll see I suppose.

The Orioles need to bite the bullet and DFA Chris Davis. I understand that he is great in the clubhouse but he is also the one anchor left on this team. Need to get him off the roster and fully commit to the rebuild.

It will get to that point soon, potentially very soon. Mountcastle and Mancini—both defensively less able—will be bats that will need some time at 1B and DH, both Davis positions.

And Nunez. Though with a 26 man roster I wouldn’t expect it to be imminent.

Dorothy! Haven’t you heard? Elias says he is going to help out Chris Davis this off season!!! He may have said the same damn thing in the 2018-2019 off season and not followed through, but dagnabbit, we can believe Mike “it’s premature to say we hired Brandon Hyde as our manager” Elias this time around!!! Bet the house on it!!

I think a previous article said Davis, who is working with a consultant this off season, would be given all of Spring Training to show his improvement before a decision happens.
