MLBTR Poll: How Good Are The Astros?

By Connor Byrne | February 3, 2020 at 10:22pm CDT

The Astros have been a juggernaut dating back to 2017, evidenced by their three 100-win efforts, two American League pennants and World Series title. However, thanks to the sign-stealing scandal from their championship-winning campaign, the Astros’ recent excellence has been sullied in the minds of many observers. Although the club’s the reigning AL champion, it’s now going into 2020 with plenty to prove on the field. It also has a new GM and manager, having parted with the eminently successful Jeff Luhnow-A.J. Hinch duo after MLB issued each of them one-year suspensions for their roles in Houston’s misdeeds.

With spring training closing in, the Astros moved quickly to replace Luhnow and Hinch after firing them in mid-January. They tabbed former Rays vice president of baseball operations James Click on Monday to take over for Luhnow in the wake of selecting veteran Dusty Baker as their new manager last week. Click’s coming over from an organization known for doing a lot with a little, but despite the chaos that has enveloped the Astros, he’s not walking into a franchise low on talent. The 70-year-old Baker, meanwhile, is a calming influence and a longtime winner whom the Astros hope will help them sail through stormy waters.

Of course, one of the knocks on Baker is that he has never helped guide a team to a title in his 22 seasons as a manager. Could that change in 2020? Perhaps, though he’s inheriting a roster that has taken some hits this offseason. There’s no more ace Gerrit Cole, who left for the hated Yankees for a record contract after two straight sterling seasons in Houston. There’s also no more standout reliever Will Harris, who became a National in free agency, or offensive-minded catcher Robinson Chirinos (now a member of the division-rival Rangers). And the Astros haven’t done anything remotely splashy via the trade or free-agent markets (the latter of which is all but devoid of impact players now) to cover for their key departures or strengthen other aspects of their roster.

While this has not been a banner winter for the Astros, they do still look to be contenders on paper. Last year’s all-world offense – one fronted by Alex Bregman, Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, George Springer and Michael Brantley, among others – remains intact. Better still, the Astros could get full seasons from Alvarez (the 2019 AL Rookie of the Year whom they didn’t promote until almost halfway through June) and the Altuve-Springer-Carlos Correa trio after those stars were limited by injuries in the most recent campaign. And while Cole and now-Red Wade Miley are gone from their rotation, the Astros still boast an elite top two with reigning AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke. They’ll also get Lance McCullers Jr. back from Tommy John surgery, though it’s up in the air how the rest of Houston’s starting staff will look once Opening Day arrives.

As nightmarish as this winter has been for the Astros, there’s no denying there’s plenty of talent still on hand. However, another 107-win season may be too much to ask – especially with their division having gotten stronger in recent months. The Athletics, a 97-win club twice in a row, look capable of challenging for the crown. Meantime, the Angels and Rangers appear to have made significant improvements after the pair stumbled to sub-.500 records a year ago. All that said, how do you expect the scandal-ridden Astros to fare this season?

      I think you have to expect some fall off considering they lose Gerrit Cole in addition to now no longer knowing what pitch and location are coming. Not to mention the psychological impact of being treated like absolute scumbags everywhere they go which is absolutely going to happen

          I don’t think you realize that no one believes that. Teams were very transparent about the fact that they believe the Astros were cheating in the playoffs last year. The Nationals famously took extreme measures in order to thwart Astros cheating attempts in the World Series. So let’s not pretend that just because the commissioners investigation was limited to 2017 that the Astros automatically magically decided to stop cheating after that year.

          Dude seriously wake up. The Astros were so blatant in their cheating. No other team can possibly compare. They so obviously have been knowing what pitches are coming. They start swinging before the ball is even released from the pitcher’s hand and sell out so hardcore for certain pitches. It is unbelievably transparent.

          The trash cans and/or buzzers ran from May 2017 through October 2019. The Nationals knew of their sign stealing and were prepared for it. Without that knowledge the Astros win it all again in 2019.

          Why in the world would the Astros players stop cheating? They got a Championship, they padded their stats, they padded their wallets. MLB did nothing to them when they got caught. And it’s not like they have integrity or anything resembling it. All they will do is cheat on a higher level and laugh about MLB’s impotent response.

          I don’t think you realize that the Astros were 53-28 ON THE ROAD in 2017. That record was TIED FOR 1ST in MLB that year. Yes, they did cheat on some games at home. They didn’t have access to their “magical” trashcan technology on the road. Don’t let facts get in the way of reality.

      Best offense in mlb baseball in 2019 with a 40.8 WAR, top ranked prospect Kyle Tucker starts in RF replacing weak hitting Josh Reddick, McCullers is back with some top arms such as James, Javier, Whitley, Abreu, and many others. Losing Cole will be tough no doubt. Astros win 97 games and take the AL West again.

    They will win less than last year. Losing Gerrit Cole will hurt more than people realize. Is Tucker ready for a starting role? Does Alvarez show regression? Also, to assume that Verlander will repeat is silly, given his age. He will still be very good but to think that a repeat of 2018 automatic is a sucker’s bet.

          In 2017, Altuve hit 15 HR on the road and 9 at home. His home road splits were non existent. The only evidence that exists of Altuve being involved with the trash can scheme is banging 2% of all pitches he saw at home, researched by someone that watched and listened every pitch thrown at home that year.

          Ok a little stretch I’m assuming on your claim but Altuve cheated the MVP away from Trout in 2017. If the Red Sox with Cora cheated in 2018 and it benefited Betts, Trout potentially would have 5 MVPs right now. And don’t even defend Bregman this past season with his cheating. Pull up any claim or percentage you want but there’s no defense, fact is Altuve cheated and his stats are most likely inflated. I don’t see him hitting over 24 again.

    Going by logic, the Astros lost pieces Like Cole, Chirinos and Harris. The Angels got Rendon and a few viable starters. The Rangers made a top 10 starting rotation. The A’s didn’t do anything, but they have more good young pieces coming up. The Astros had to change the Gm and Manager, so they will have to adjust to the new clubhouse feel. Still a good team, but with more competition, I do not see how they are not a 90-94 win team.

    Actually this post has me thinking about something, and that is, Who is the new worst team in 2020? Do the Tigers repeat, maybe the orioles, I personally think that the Marlins will be better than people think (still bad though), maybe the Giants or Pirates? I think Orioles just because they have lost more good players, and are now in an even stronger AL east.

      Bucs have been gutted… Giants still have a few players who can help win 65 or 70 games.
      Pretty much Bell is the only decent regular in lineup. Archer is a shell of his Rays time.

    The Astros road splits in 2017 were actually better than their home splits. They honestly didn’t even need to be stealing signs and that make the whole thing even more stupid. As for this season, the Astros’ lineup is steal loaded. Their pitching staff has taken a step back, but the division they play in is not that great. The A’s are a good team, but have their own flaws. The Angels pitching is still not good enough. The Mariners are bad. The Rangers have improved, but they’re still not as good as the Astros. Even with everything that has gone on & with the loss of Cole & Miley from the rotation, the Astros still have to be considered division favorites

    A lot of variables this season:
    …
    * Dusty managing
    * Click GM
    * Booing fans (opponents)
    * Constant questions from media
    * Cheating security blanket removed
    * Player personality changes (will Bregman pose for the camera? is Altuve still mighty mouse?)
    * Gerrit Cole removed
    * Other key players removed (Chirinos, Harris, etc)
    * Father time’s impact on the rotation
    * Rest of AL West improving
    …
    Obviously they’re still going to be the favorites in the AL West, but with the above factors in mind, it’s going to be quite the challenge to continue the same amount of success.

    Lmao this comment section is littered with Astro illusionist. Let me break it down and shine a little perspective on you guys. First and foremost the astros will have the toughest season in terms of dealing with the psychological aspect of the game. Every away game played will be filled with boos and negative taunts and it will be a media nightmare with reporters constantly referencing the cheating, not to mention the 29 other teams backlash to the cheating. And in terms of stats they will attempt to replace a combined 499 IP, 43 Wins, and 15.5war (cole, miley, harris, rondon, and chirinos). Mcculler’s previous career high is 128 innings and he is coming off tommy john how exactly is this going to be a full season or crazy impact?? Their top 2 pitchers will be 36 & 37 years old realistically how much longer can they keep this up and or stay healthy??? Honestly if either one of greinke or verlander sputters a bit the Astros might not even make the playoffs altogether. Correa, altuve, and springer were all hurt at one point in 2019. It just seems that everything will have to go perfect in order for things to work out. Everyone but the mariners and astros got better. If the Angels can get a legit starter and Texas a legit middle of the order bat it’ll be a really interesting AL West race.

      I’ll say what I’m saying now: they’re still very talented. I expect 94-96 wins from them. Verlander and Greinke are still very good, Alvarez looks like a great hitter, and they still have guys like Bregman and Springer. Some of their wins probably came from cheating and that sucks, but there’s still a lot of high-end talent on that team.

      Reply

    I don’t think even with the team constructed that they will win 95+ games it sure feels more like 85-88 games you have another older year of Verlander & Greinke along with a Tommy John Bounceback in McCullers whom will be limited. They are also banking on M.Brantley to not go back to his d.l days when he was with the Indians as well as Yordan Alvarez to fight off that last year was not a fluke. plus their bullpen and starting rotation is not at any strength and the toll of being labeled cheaters will surely get to them.

    Also Angels and Texas will be much improved and Houston will not go again 56-20 against their own division and A’s will always give them a challenge.

    That is why I’m thinking 85-88 games and let’s not forget Grienke a whole year in the A.L. will get to him.

There is NO penalty to the players. With the obvious lack of integrity in the Astros organization I expect them to be finding ‘better’ ways of cheating. The Angels didn’t address their pitching issues. The A’s didn’t do much and lost a couple guys, but they’re the only ones I think the Astros should watch out for. I still think they win about 95. I find it funny how fans of other teams pretend like their team ISN’T.there is evidence of other teams doing similar things, and accusations of numerous other teams being linked as well. The problem with this whole thing is that the commissioner came down so harshly on the Astros (as he should have) but he did it too early. There is no possible way he can punish other teams the same way as the Astros. My assumption is that the red Sox will get a slap on the wrist, and other teams like the dodgers, brewers and rangers will be told to “knock it off.” If the commissioner decided to punish every team the same way it would be damaging to the game for decades. Should have waited to finish all investigations before doling out a harsh punishment to only one team. As I said before, I’m fine with the Astros punishment so long as all the other teams doing the same or similar actions are equally punished.
