What happens to Mookie is what happens to all major leaguers—he sits until it is safe to play, with or without fans in the stands. He’s losing wages but hey, join the nationwide club. The Dodgers losing his on-field presence is karma. Chavez Ravine residents lost their homes to the thieving Dodgers and city administrators. It’s fitting that the thieving Dodgers who took away the last six years of local game broadcasting to two-thirds of L.A.s TV audience now lose their one year of Mookie control—karma.

Hey BUGZ: “What did the dodgers do to you?”, you say. Nothing compared to what postseason opponents do to your Dodgers—especially in the World Series (in full view of the world). Being a choker Dodger fan is tough, huh? Getting worked up every season when you think you finally have the team to win (the WS) hurts doesn’t it? Not sorry the World Champs have been your daddies for so long. Now– assume the position.

Lose yes! But add to the list Verdugo and Downs. They lose many years of their servies and while paying their salaries with peanuts. They got taken BIG TIME! Let’s face it, they got into this predictement because they got greedy and in heat to get Mookie. Very stupid trade, just hold on to Verdugo and Downs stupids, be patient, sign Mookie in 8 months as a free agent is all they had to do. This moronic move has embarrassed Dodgers fans and the organization. Hahaha

If you’re implying that Dodger Stadium is a dump then you’re in the minority. Many people consider it one of the most beautiful stadiums. And it’s only getting better as they’ve done additional upgrades this year.

I’m an east coast guy who visits different parks every year. Last year I went to Dodger stadium and Seattle. Dodger stadium has a lot of history but it’s definitely not fan friendly if you’re not connected to the team. I’ve been to about half the ballparks and I think the Pirates have the best stadium. Of course, Fenway has the most history.

Dodger Stadium has its problems, but then it is the third oldest park in baseball. Recent upgrades have helped. More were made this year, but we might not get to see them. How do you mean not fan friendly if you aren’t connected to the team? I am genuinely curious. Is it because it’s filled with hometown fans?

Yes, out of the 4 $300m+ contracts given to free agents, the dodgers haven’t landed them but they’ve made offers for 3 of them. Not sure why they wouldn’t offer this to mookie considering they already gave something up to get him for this season.

But they’ve they’ve offered it, they’ve been in on all of the major contracts so far besides machado, to say their cheap when they offered Bryce, Cole, and Rendon Major money is selling them short considering that’s 3/4 of the $300+ contracts given to a fa. If they went after those guys with zero ties to the dodgers and struck out, I’d think this is part of the train they made the trade.

@yogineely the Dodgers didn’t have to trade for Mookie first to be able to sign him later. Nor does the fact that they already gave up those assets for his last year of control mean there is added pressure to keep him.

I totally get that, I know there’s no bird rights in mlb, however friedmans comments praise mookie, says he hopes he falls in love with la, talk about how long he’s liked him, and he hopes to extend or resign. Those being friedmans comments and the only evidence against it being friedmans history of being “cheap” I don’t think it’s a complete loss to get him in the club house to try and sway him to stay. Getting 8 months to negotiate something is definitely a plus, even if he wants to test the waters just due to the time the dodgers and mookies people get to negotiate and talk

I’m not the one saying “they’re cheap.” I’ll leave the bumper sticker arguments to others. Quite a few of the offers they’ve made for big ticket free agents show their preference for shorter term deals, sometimes at higher AAV, than what the player will get from another team. I don’t know what purpose is served by making offers that are almost certain to be rejected, but that’s what they’ve been doing. Betts could be the most expensive free agent contract in the history of the game. Making second-best offers doesn’t sign players. What in the history of the Dodgers suggests that they would be the ones to make him his best offer?

        • yogineely

Yeah totally understand that, and wasn’t really accusing you of being the one that was saying their cheap, was more directed at most the other comments, not just on this specific thread either. Nothing in their history except that friedman has gone on record hyping mookie up. Friedman doesn’t seem like the guy to get excited much, unless it’s being the third team in a trade. Also, trading for mookie in general is not like prior friedman moves where he’s made most his big splashes at the deadline and his pre season trades have largely been to shed players on their last season, not acquire them. I don’t see mookie as every other free agent prior in this situation for the dodgers.

Also, I love baseball101 telling me to stay away from the media on one of the few media sites I read, which he obviously does too. Even reads the comments haha

I haven’t heard Friedman say much about Betts, nothing special or out of the ordinary anyway. The best way I can see to judge how he feels about the talent is how much he was willing to give up for a year of him. No matter how he feels about the player, the way I see it the value calculation changes totally when he become a free agent. Now we’re talking about making him a Dodger for life at an immense cost and in a very uncertain economic environment. Anything less than 10 years and around $350M and he goes elsewhere for sure unless the free agency market takes a huge downturn (which is possible).

No, trading for Mookie does not have the future in mind. There is no evidence that trading for players makes it easier to sign them or vice versa. Especially considering Mookie is sitting at home like everyone else rather than actively playing for the Dodgers in 2020. If they just offer him the most $ in free agency it will make the trade look worse. Not better.

Dodgers are getting their $300M every year for 25 years from TimeWarner for broadcasting rights. So yeah, they don’t have a problem with $300M contracts as long as they’re on the receiving end.

This Dodgers ownership has yet to offer anyone more than a 4 year deal. Other than Kershaw. They have not shown any kind of interest in long term deals. They offered Bryce Harper a 4 year deal for 160 million. Machado they offered a three year deal. They didn’t even offer Cole more than a 4 year deal. Rendon told the Dodgers outright that he wasn’t interested in signing with them.

One of the worst common opinions in the baseball community is about David Price. Half of David Price’s contract is a very good contract for the Dodgers. 16 million is nothing for a solid pitcher. Homer Bailey just got 7 million…. Pitching is expensive and David Price on the same contract they gave Rich Hill is not bad.

          2017 94.1
          2018 93.1
          2019 92.4

Same with his sinker curve and change up. All 3 pitches have seen their velocity drop.

That doesn’t bode well going forward for them.

He declined every year even though he was significantly better in 2017-18 than 2016?? Price has had a very good strikeout/walk rates in the past 2 years and in 2018 he was excellent. The idea Price stinks is just wrong and will be proven wrong whenever games start. As a free agent he would easily get 2 years 20 million at least.

How is it choking if you said 2 teams they lost to cheated and the Nats were a team of destiny who flat out refused to die like a steroid infused roach. The Dodgers scored 12 runs in a WS game and lost. The Astros are frauds who robbed them of a title. Kershaw getting zero swings and misses on his curveball in game 5 says it all about how much the Astros were cheating the game.

I’m a Giants fan, and it hurts me to admit that the Dodgers are a successful organization, but they really are. They’ve won the NL West like seven years in a row or something, and they consistently are competitive and draw loads of fans to the ballpark, while maintaining a good farm system the whole time. No, they haven’t won a World Series, and I doubt the dodgers are satisfied with what they’ve accomplished, but to say they aren’t successful is an oversight.

However, I also love that all four of the things you pointed out happened.

I would say… not agreed on great organization because a great one would have won it at least once. They don’t go out and get the missing link or just ain’t good enough to figure out how to get it.

Winning the West seven years in a row is a rather dubious honor. For a team like the Padres is might be great, but for an organization like the Dodgers, who have won a lot of championships but haven’t in decades, it is almost embarrassing. Always the bridesmaid never the bride sort of thing. The ‘choke’ nickname must be grating at this point.

As a lifelong Dodger fan I find it humorous how Dodger haters want to define my team solely on if they win a ring each year while their team doesn’t even smell the playoffs. I have enjoyed an amazing seven year run of great games to go to all season long into October. I got to go to three World Series games (2 vs Houston and 1 vs Red Sox). Basically I got 99% of what a fan could ask for when most fans are lucky to get 75%. I’m a happy fan and while I look forward to the eventual ring I don’t discount all the success we’ve had in the meantime. I’d rather have seven years of winning but coming up just short then six losing seasons and one ring. Maybe it’s just me.

Allegedly Mookie turned down 300 million for 10 years and came back with an ask of 420 million for 12 with the Sox. He’ll never see 420 now from anyone He’s going to be fortunate to get 30 per this offseason with more than 7 years. Sometimes players get greedy and it blows up in their faces. I like Mookie and I watched him from the time he was in the minors to his last year with us and one thing for sure his swing is tailor made for Fenway. However being a small guy and wanting 10 or more years I don’t believe his body will hold up. Sox May try to get back in with him but don’t think they’ll go more than 7 years and 180 million now.

I agree that the money offered to Betts was irrelevant as he wanted free agency. If some team signs him for more 7-8 years it will end up like so many bad contracts Ellsbury, A-rod, Sandoval, …. I could list 100s. Most players signed past 35 end up not being worth the money or you could say the money would be better spent elsewhere. I love watching Betts play and I wish him well wherever he ends up.

God bless to everyone and hope all are safe…that is the most important thing these days.

Win the 2020 makeshift World Series or extend him for less than Bryce Harper.

Extending him for less would justify the trade slightly, because if they extend him for a record setting deal, they coulda done that without trading for him first. That said, LAD didn’t want to give Harper a ton of years and bailed on Stanton for the contract length too.

So in a few words, win the WS in his lone year.

He is all about power, and he has hit over 30-HR in only half of his seasons. He has only hit over 40 once. That was 59 sure, but he only averages just under 31-HR per year. That is not really star type power.

Assuming they make the playoffs in any type of short year, LA probably doesn’t mind having a half season. They got Mookie for October, not April.

Actually, Mookie will be worth more on a per-game basis, WHEN they begin play soon

Less games determine who makes it to the final dance, therefore in a 100 game season each individual game is worth that much more. Great players help tilt that advantage but so will flashes in the pan and smaller sample sizes. Excited to see what this season brings!

When the Dodgers make the post-season, Mookie will pay dividends. Not a Dodgers fan but Mookie is a game changer.

I disagree. In a shorter season, you’re right, flashes in the pan matter more, as do prolonged slumps. Over the course of a 162-game season, Mookie is more likely to stand out from the rest of the pack than he is over a 100-game or 81-game season. Remember Trevor Story’s scorching start? Or Jose Abreu’s? They’re solid players, but both played way above their heads in their first half season. That doesn’t make them nearly as good as Betts.

They win if there’s a season and they’re WS champs. If not, they lose because they could have just signed him next year and only forfeited a draft pick and not had to take on half of Price’s salary. Only other possibility for them to win is if they flip him at the deadline for whatever reason (injuries pile up and they’re far back of Arizona, but that’d be a *lot* of injuries) for a lottery ticket who hits like Tatis, Jr, but that seems highly unlikely.

This could work out great for the Dodgers. There could be a significantly shortened season which would allow them to pay Betts a fraction of this year’s contract while still getting him for the postseason. Betts may also choose to do a one year pillow deal for next season due to the uncertain economic conditions which will chill the free agent market. The Dodgers would be the likeliest team to sign him since there would be a QO on him anyway.
The Red Sox still benefit from the players they got back but the only drawback here is that they are losing most of a cheap Verdugo season.

They are talking about the virus being worst next flu season than it is already, which means that MLB may be revisiting live game issues next year as well. MLB is going to lose a substantial amount of money/ and teams. People are out of work and many will even after economy starts back up. This is going to hurt global merchandise sales, game attendance, etc and games without fans will be like watching women’s softball on ESPN 2. Ketch: “In short, they got ripped off by fate, but they could afford it.” No, Ketch, you said it wrong—the Red Sox gave the Dodgers “nothing” and got three players out of it who eventually will play for Boston. Dodgers got ripped in this deal AND got ripped to pieces in the WS by Boston. No fate, just American League men putting whipped cream on the sacrificial cupcakes from Malibu.

Probably not. He’s not re-signing with them. An mvp would only benefit him and possibly getting more of a bigger contract. This would suck as a cubs fan but I think he goes to st Louis and they either trade Fowler or move him to a corner spot. 296/8. That’s 37m aav. Being 27 with a shorter deal like 8 years there is a chance he can get a nelson cruz deal towards the end of his career.
