As other major sports leagues consider the possibility of televising games played in front of empty stadiums, Major League Baseball would love to do the same. The reality of the situation is that even quarantining teams in Arizona or Florida don’t solve all the issues. Too many obstacles remain to make such an arrangement safe under the current conditions, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. With the amount of asymptomatic carriers unclear, there’s no way to guarantee the health and safety of those involved. There are simply too many moving pieces. Even the most bare bones operation for a single game would involve 52 players, plus coaches, umpires, television crews, hotel accommodations, food service workers, drivers, etc.
There would be financial hurdles as well, mostly in terms of allocating the television money. The fact is, a huge proportion of game day revenue comes from fans in the stadium. Without fan revenue, there would have to be a conversation between the league and players about the players taking reduced pay. Teams would not be able to pay players at their normal rates, and while the league and the players’ union have worked diligently at forming peaceful accords throughout this trying time, the amity alone does not smooth all the edges.
Besides, the revenue from TV contracts would not be able to cover the costs, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune. Acee notes that those teams with their own television networks might be able to make enough for the games to be worthwhile, but for those negotiating with local networks, there would likely be a further reduction in revenue. With the terms of original television contracts altered under the circumstances, the contracts themselves would likely require a renegotiation as well. There have been a few games without fans (or with few fans) aired over the years, and the end product is always a little bit eerie. It might be better than nothing under the circumstances, but where revenue is concerned, every adjustment has trickle down effects that must be negotiated throughout the invested parties.
And of course, there’s the final, most important obstacle, which I’ll relay directly from Rosenthal: “Diverting resources from health care would be another concern. Baseball would need to conduct wide-ranging testing for the virus, isolate anyone who gets sick and provide proper medical attention. Such an effort would require outside assistance, the kind of resources the league could not justify drawing away from the general population in the middle of a public health crisis.”

Maybe in June
Strike Four
Definitely NOT happening in June. At some point you have to face the facts, this whole year is a wash, across the board, sports, life, everything. We are going to be stuck in our houses until winter or a cure is found, and please do not try and predict when a cure is found.
AllRiseForTheJudge
lol there is a 0% chance of anyone being “stuck in the house” until winter or a cure is found. People are going to begin to riot in major cities once the warm weather arrives, and nobody in NYC is following social distancing anyway.
Stop with the dumb comments. This is a seasonal virus that will simply return in November, and everyone is making a huge deal out of it because there’s no vaccine. NYC will be done with the worst of this at the end of the month and business as usual will resume in May.
Strike Four
Nope, only your comment about a PANDEMIC is the only extremely dumb and naive thing here.
Yep, no one in NYC is following social distancing, so they’re all going to die. Great. You are “right”! Feel good? You shouldn’t.
What an imbecile you truly are. Stop talking. You don’t deserve your voice if youre going to say dangerously stupid stuff like this just because you cannot handle reality and the truth. Take a look in the mirror man, the way your mind works is messed up and wrong.

AllRiseForTheJudge
So you’re the guy who is going to be Patient zero for the second wave in your “world”?
I hope it doesn’t kill anyone you care about because your attitude suggests you might be the cause/source
Quentin
No…
Everyone is making a huge deal out of it because THOUSANDS ARE DYING DAILY AROUND THE WORLD BECAUSE OF THIS VIRUS, and there is no known cure or official treatment for it.
Downplaying the severity of the virus is what got this country in the situation we’re in. Predicting when things will get “back to normal” is foolish, especially if you don’t work in the infectious diseases field.
carlhancock
@AllRiseForTheJudge Your comment is not going to age well at all. You vastly underestimate the situation the world is currently in. The only dumb comment here is your own. This isn’t a seasonal virus. How do I know? I live in the tropics. I live in Costa Rica. It’s summer here year round. Guess what? It’s here. We are in lockdown just like everyone else. It’s all over SE Asia. Central America. What do those places have in common? They have the weather you seem to think is going to make this thing go away year round and it isn’t doing that. We won’t see business as usual resume in May. We’ll be lucky to see it resume by the end of the summer at the earliest. It sounds like you need to come to grips with reality.
TheAdrianBeltre
So, you think this thing is gonna come back in November? And that’s okay? I try not to name call, but what a moron…
AllRiseForTheJudge
Sorry, not gonna panic over a seasonal virus that most of the world’s population will never know they have. New York is already talking about how we’re going to reopen the economy because officials here expect that we are nearing the peak of this virus in our state, and no matter which model you look at for projections, the rate of new infections is down to an extremely manageable number two weeks after the peak.
This virus has been here since at least December, science has proven that and I’ve seen several articles supporting that scientific evidence. Most of us have probably already had it and been diagnosed with the flu because there was no test available until a month ago.
The only thing that has changed is the availability of testing, and now we see huge numbers and go “OMG WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE! STOP EVERYTHNG!”. Nope, sorry, it’s a seasonal virus that will take two years to prepare a vaccine to immunize people against, and the world can’t wait two years. This will be over in a month in NYS and it’ll be back in November, and everyone will realize “oh, it’s just a more contagious form of seasonal flu that causes viral pneumonia in at-risk populations. We’re fine”.
The panic is entirely uncalled for. New York will be back to normal by Memorial Day because there will be riots if we aren’t.
Vizionaire
calling yourself?
AllRiseForTheJudge
LOL right, we’re “all going to die” from a seasonal virus that will never affect most of us because we simply will never know we have it. Nobody is dying because they aren’t following social distancing, they’re dying because they have underlying medical conditions – diagnosed or not.
Your comment that everyone is going to die because they aren’t’ six feet apart or building a clean room in their homes so the virus can’t get in is what’s dangerous. That is simply entirely false. Look at the science instead of babbling because you’re scared. Normal, sane people aren’t scared.
carlhancock
If you think there will be riots in New York if things aren’t back to normal by Memorial Day… I would suggest you prepare for riots. Because there is absolutely no way things will be back to normal by Memorial Day.
This is not some “seasonal virus”. You seem to be in a denial about the gravity of the situation.
VegasSDfan
Riseforjudge, you stop with the stupid comments like saying people are going to riot.
Second stupid comment is saying this is seasonal. It’s doing quite well in hot climates such as India, Florida, Hawaii, Thailand.
Everyone is making a huge deal because 10s. Possibly 100s of 1000s of people are going to die right here in trumps USA.
AllRiseForTheJudge
The science says otherwise. I’ve seen several articles stating that this virus is believed to be seasonal based on research findings, and that it will simply return in winter.
NYC will be open for business by Memorial Day, I guarantee that. Whether things are “normal” remains to be seen, but businesses will not be closed and events will not be banned beyond that because nobody will follow it anyway. You aren’t going to tell 8.6 million people that they can’t have parties and BBQs in the summer, or go to the beach, or play basketball, or whatever else they want to do. Especially in communities with heavy gang populations, because with warm weather comes higher tensions and less patience. If people have nothing to do, gang violence will skyrocket.
Trust me, I’ve lived here my entire life, I’ve seen it. The first time the power goes out in the summer and nobody can go to a bar or an air conditioned place, there will be shootings, riots, and everything else you can think of. We are open for business by Memorial Day for the simple reason that we have to be.
AllRiseForTheJudge
VegasSDfan, you just said the magic words: “trumps USA”. He’s done nothing to prepare for this and everything to help it along. We had three cases of Ebola during Obama’s Presidency because he went out of his way to prevent it from ever becoming a problem here.
We have an idiot at the wheel and he’s steering us right into extinction, but the good news is he’s sunk his own battleship with his completely inept response to this crisis. Because yes, it is a crisis, but it is one of leadership, not one of medicine or science. This all could have been prevented with even a slightly intelligent person at the controls.
carlhancock
@VegasSDfan Can confirm. This isn’t seasonal. I live in Costa Rica. It’’s summer year round here. Right now is the hottest time of the year in the area of Costa Rica where I live. It’s here. We’ve been on lockdown for 25 days now. Borders are closed, etc. The idea that this is seasonal is absurd. It’s all over Central America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, etc. and these are all tropical climates. There is nothing seasonal about it. It’s here. And it will be here until we get it under control. And that isn’t going to happen by Memorial Day.
Appalachian_Outlaw
ALLRiseForTheJudge, you’re partially right, in that there are, and will be some that never know they have it. Here’s the thing though, and where you have this horribly wrong- they can, and will infect people who could lose their lives.
Your whole argument is this is a seasonal virus. We don’t know that. We haven’t been through summer yet. The science you’re pointing to “suggests” it, in your own words. It doesn’t state it as fact.
Let’s assume they’re wrong. Is the price ultimately worth it, in the name of entertainment? I love baseball too, and miss some of the social things we just can’t currently do. If it keeps the people I care about safe though, I’m just fine missing those things. They’re unimportant, really. It’s a small price to pay.
Jayphils
Judge your comments are ignorant and dangerous, as someone who works in healthcare this is not seasonal cold, the Novel part of the name is the key notation, it means no one has an immunity to this virus and it not just people with underlying conditions who are dying, all ages are being impacted and even if you survive does not mean you will not have long term impact to lung function and other issues. I hope this was an effort to troll us all and not a real post. Info wars is not a science journal but I am assuming you are getting your “science” from som BS site like that.

Dangerously stupid is ruining people’s lives over a disease that kills a tiny percentage of the infected. Look at actual statistics.
thetruth 2
Chances of someone dying around you are tiny considering according to OFFICIAL statistics the death rate is tiny and 1-3% while 81% do t even have serious symptoms. Did I mention that less than 1% of Americans are even infected.
AndyMeyer
You’re an idiot
Jayphils
Official statistic is not a range it’s a number and it’s closing on 6% for the record. 1% is the confirmed case not the actual number, it you could test more the number would be exponentially higher. I have 2 people I know two who have died from it and 4 others who had to be isolated but were never officially tested since there were not enough tests in my state but luckily recover after a few weeks. You spouting crap you hear on Fox News, Facebook or Brexbeit or some of the other BS news feeds.

Here is the rate at which this virus is killing people
Closed cases – 310,384
Deaths – 64,274

Daynlokki
So you’ve seen scientific journals stating the virus is for sure seasonal? A virus they haven’t seen before December is known to be seasonal exactly how? Is the Southern Hemisphere not effected by it? Because their seasons are reverse of ours in the northern. Meaning it’s currently spreading in Australia while in the weather you are stating will make it go dormant. Seems those journals you read didn’t actually have any scientific basis.
Daynlokki
You realize one of the ‘underlying’ conditions that cause a higher death rate for this is obesity right? What’s America lead the world in again?
Sarasotaosfan
I agree judge. This social distancing is a poor substitute for a cheaper and more effective response: facial covering.

“Here in Trumps USA”? As they did in Obama’s USA swine epidemic. There’s many other formats for political banter. Stay safe and pray (if you do that) for a quicker than normal vaccine. Otherwise, millions will die regardless of who is running this mess.

The virus is not just in NY. It will take time for the whole country to get hot, peak, and recover. And we don’t know if early exposure will give us immunity down the line.
No one knows when life will be back to (somewhat) normal. Only fools.

The earliest I see this ending is July. The virus dies in hot weather. I’m thinking and hopeful August 1st as a start up.
Do we really want a baseball season that is 2 months long, then playoffs?
They should be looking at revamping the schedule.
6 games vs division clubs (24)
6 games vs 1 same time zone NL/AL opponent (6)
3 games vs rest of their league clubs (30)
Also to reduce travel,MLB PA would have to agree to-
Days off
Day night double headers
Restrictions for travel
Mandate a 15 day road trip vs other inter league division.
Clubs would have a 30 man roster-26 would be active each game. Quicker service time.
DH in all inter league games. Why? Reduce pitcher injuries.
Also covered stadiums would remain available for any neutral site games. Can you imagine if another Katrina disaster hit?
Also there are no longer MLB/NFL clubs sharing a stadium.
MLB TV package is $50 for the season.
The only other wrinkle would be the Blue Jays playing in Buffalo. If customs and borders are shut/restricted,I see that as an option. (No offense to Blue Jay fans.)
Also all minor leagues would play at their spring training sites. AAA,AA,A,rookie.
Florida and Arizona. That would also reduce travel.
Just a thought. And I’m not bashing the Jays. Just looking at the potential border situation.
Jayphils
The virus does not die in hot weather, UV from the sun can help degrade the virus but can still spread which is why we see this spread everywhere including hot areas. Not sure where people are hearing this but look at where this virus is at and spreading tell me the correlation with hot weather stopping it
Dodgethis
Uh guy, more than the temperature changes with the seasons.

Every state with the exception of 5 are under stay at home order and I don’t see that slowing a virus that can be spread through the air. If we get NHL, NBA playoffs and regular season baseball by July I would be shocked. This is not like 9/11 where sports resumed in a week or 2, This is the manmade “Novel Coronavirus”
thetruth 2
This quarantine is only there to protect hospitals not us
Koamalu
@tim 9 states do not currently have stay at home orders. forbes.com/sites/sergeiklebnikov/2020/04/04/here-a…
Novel means it came from animals and mutated. So it was not manmade.
Jayphils
Novel means it never been seen before in humans so no one has immunity to it and why it can spread quickly
thetruth 2
This is all ridiculous and honestly pretty stupid. The death rate is very very low. The VAST majority don’t even have serious symptoms. We’re destroying the economy and ruining people’s livelihoods instead of just quarantining the ones at risk like Sweden is successfully doing. We are not stuck in our houses until Winter as that’s just idiotic and unsustainable. There already cures and it’s not really that important to be honest when herd immunity would be far more effective.
Appalachian_Outlaw
Truth, in a nutshell, it sounds an awful lot like you’re saying there’s an acceptable level of collateral damage in the name of profit. That’s pretty callous, to me. What you’re also failing to take into account is what happens, with more exposure, if our medical professionals start falling ill. We can’t just train new ones in 2 weeks to care for them.
Some risks are unavoidable. Baseball isn’t one worth taking, however.
renbutler
Appalachian, I know this isn’t exactly like the flu, but we apparently have an acceptable level of collateral damage every year for the flu, and that’s tens of thousands of deaths.
AndyMeyer
For someone who uses the name “the truth”, you certainly don’t speak it
MWeller77
Appalachian, please just ignore “the truth.” He’s been downplaying the severity of the crisis, and implying (with his percentages) that hundreds of thousands of deaths is an acceptable outcome, on every COVID-19-related post. He’s either hopelessly deluded or just a troll.

Good grief, Strike Four, you’re listening to the wrong people.
There will be a lot of lessons that need to be learned when this is all over, but sadly I predict that the people who need to learn them won’t.
Afk711
You can’t cure a virus. 9th grade health must have been hard.
bjupton100
You’re going to try to “cure” a slight variation of the flu? Not happening, it has already mutated and a mutated versian that can’t be innoculated against will always be coming around. Stats wise this isn’t a big deal and will be seen as an overreaction, a justifiable one but an overreaction all the same.
tribepride17
Peak should be around April 19. Models predict by June 1st we should have very few cases. Take a chill pill brother. This is a serious situation but we are taking unprecedented actions and testing capacity is increasing daily. Hopefully you’re medical opinions are as wrong as your baseball opinions

Strike Four
Sports are cancelled until 2021 and the leagues need to start saying this out loud more. The athletes can stay in shape in case a cure is found, but until that day, there’s no use pretending any kind of live sports will be played.
It’s really terrible and bad for mankind/the death toll to test all athletes over sick people, so even if they wanted to go that route and test all 50+ players, it’s not moral enough to warrant doing.
MLB should focus on 2021 and figure out how to even out all the trades for and 1-year signings of guys who will never play for that team. Betts, Hamels, Ozuna, Gregorius, Encarnacion, Betances, Porcello, Treinen, Teheran, Gausman etc will most likely never play for the team they are currently on, so I’d hope MLB will step in and create a bonus first round lottery in the draft for all those teams who spent big and paid these guys to never play for them. Only seems fair here.
thetruth 2
I don’ty know who is giving these idiotic comments likes. Sports have NOT been cancelled until 2021.

Everything that touched that dump was useless. Yet another reason want not 1c of any tax money going towards sports stadiums and that was in a red state, where there are checks and balances set up to probe wasted spending, even in highly blue areas.. Such as south Florida. Imagine the waste going under the rug for a place like Oakland should they get a new stadium where everything is blue?

There’s every chance that we will. When 1-3% of people die from a disease and 81% don’t even have serious symptoms, it’s hardly a big issue. The problem is media overhype and chicken littles easily triggered to be scared. The blow to our economy and all the people losing jobs and livelihoods means that we’ll be back to normal VERY soon, in other words once hospitals are in better shape as that’s the real reason we have this quarantine, to flatten the curve and not stop the disease.

Tiger’s administration is arguing having fans sit in the furthest away from the field seats in majors is a good idea and they should be commended for doing this in previous years. They now have a novel idea- Charge fans on off days to come in the stadium at reduced prices to see the field crews work on the grass. Or charge fans to watch stadium only television of away games. Of course no one thinks their plan of charging fans to sit in seats outside the stadium. during real games is .doable, despite the guilabilty of Tiger fans
Bill Smith
The Tigers were 6th lowest in avg home attendance last year. Most Tiger fans recognize the organization from the top down is complete and utter trash, and aren’t attending games as a result, so the narrative of “guilabile” -lol, good try, Tiger fans, is tired and just plain inaccurate.
Bill Smith
Can we stop pretending like it’s even possible that we have MLB this year? The second one person tests positive, fan, player, management, staff or otherwise, the outcry and media uproar would put an end to it before it even begins.
Just. Stop it.
bobtillman
I’m no doctor, don’t even play one on TV…..but I think Mr. Smith is completely right. The threat of the virus will likely abate a bit, but it’s not going away any time soon. And the contagion realities, no matter what the incidence rate is, will prohibit any mass gatherings this year.
“CHIEF BRODY, CLOSE THE BEACHES!”

Ancient Pistol
You must be a Baltimore fan.
thetruth 2
Actually it’s not just possible it’s very likely. This lockdown is ending in a month and we’ll be back to normal. How do I know this? Because common sense says that a disease that kills a tiny percentage of infected isn’t going to be overblown by media hype forever, once enough people’s lives are ruined due to losing their jobs and people start rioting over lockdowns which will be a reality if this doesn’t end soon, all these restrictions will disappear.
Koamalu
Its sad that you keep spreading fake information. Information that could do harm to other people.
Here is the rate at which this virus is killing people.
Closed cases – 310,384
Deaths – 64,274
Recovered – 246,110
Mortality Rate = Deaths/Closed Cases
64,274/310,384 = 20.7% Mortality Rate
You cannot count open cases, because you do not know the outcome for those people. The death rate is 20% as of today.
Hawktattoo
From what I have read you are very short on common sense. You have had made claims and been asked for proof…no answer. You said there is cure….so tell us! You said it is seasonal…ok prove it! You said riots coming in New York like this is a good thing.
renbutler
Not only is it not pretending, it’s HIGHLY LIKELY that there will be baseball this season, at little or know risk to anybody.
Good grief, where do you folks get things like this? We’ll be well past the peak by late May.
AndyMeyer
You sure about that?
Ancient Pistol
Most of you need to relax. Let’s just wait it out for a while and see where this goes. We are only nine days into the regular season. It’s not as if this is August.
Once the numbers subside, and they will, the league can plan a schedule. If the pandemic lasts far longer than some expect, then they can consider cancelling. But to say we should cancel now is defeatist.
Vizionaire
fema is ordering 100,000 body bags. for dead people that may not be afford caskets or the area where caskets cannot be brought in fast enough.
Ancient Pistol
And that’s the reason to cancel everything? So body bags for 0.03% of the population is enough in your mind to throw in the towel on life?
What are you going to say to those who are protected from COVID-19 due to forced stay-in-place orders but they are starving to death because they lost their job?
Vizionaire
my wife and two kids all work at home. maybe, you don’t have a job to begin with.
thetruth 2
Disgusting comment. How about barbers and other people who can’t work at home? How about business owners? Their lives are meaningless to you huh?
its_happening
…And doubtful barbers are making house calls. Mullet season is in-session and we’re all students of the hair game.
User 4245925809
Sal Maglie made house calls. Right to the plate, or box..
Please stop filling up this topic will ya??
thetruth 2
Stop being a chicken little. 1-3% die from this disease. It’s only slightly higher than others. If I tell you how many people die from car accidents annually are you going to panic over that too? It’s a higher number just so you know.
Vizionaire
live your life the way you want. but don’t ever spread virus and stupidity. you are not smarter than doctors. and the numbers you quote are not created by doctors but politicians that control doctors. obviously you choose to believe whatever those vile politicians want you to believe.
thejet
Car accidents aren’t contagious…
DrDan75
Good lord.
This is a global outbreak of something for which there is no cure and presently no vaccine. It attacks the respiratory system, meaning that hospitals are going to be packed to the gills with people who can’t breathe very well and need ventilators.
Yes, most will survive and vaccines will eventually be developed. But if hospitals are overwhelmed, which they will be unless the contagion curve is managed, people who have heart attacks, strokes, cancer, diabetes and so on won’t be able to get proper care, especially when doctors and nurses and EMT people start falling ill in huge numbers. There will be many otherwise preventable deaths, not just COVID deaths.
This isn’t media hype. I wish it were.
Koamalu
Since you keep repeating that lie I will keep repeating the truth.
Here is the rate at which this virus is killing people
Closed cases – 310,384
Deaths – 64,274
Recovered – 246,110
Mortality Rate = Deaths/Closed Cases
64,274/310,384 = 20.7% Mortality Rate

tribepride17
Death rates are meaningless drivel because we have no idea how many cases have been resolved without ever being tested. Sooo much noise in your death rate data. It’s truly a meaningless number that scares people to death.
Polish Hammer
Enough already!
HailPhire_Osfan
MLB should just cancel the season to protect fans and players and staff and hopefully things will be back to normal in 2021. As an added bonus once they cancel i would finally get the refund for opening day tickets.
Ancient Pistol
Just because you hate your team doesn’t mean the rest of us want to give up one week in.
Also, a year off isn’t going to make your team any better. In fact, you’ll just forestall the pain on extra year.
pustule bosey
well as a giants fan I would rather see a season than not, part of rebuilding is actually rebuilding
thetruth 2
Nope. Better is to stop panicking over nonsense like a “dangerous disease” that kills a tiny fraction of people who get it.

Side note Truth; checked your website. Looks pretty good. Keep up the solid work.
TheAdrianBeltre
Say what you want, but Tampa has played in an empty stadium on TV for years…
Ancient Pistol
Haha! True. Didn’t the Orioles play a game or two a few years back in an empty stadium because of rioting?
I think the point most people are missing is not that baseball is important in the grade scheme of things but it can be used as a mechanism or purpose to pull us out of dark times. After weeks and weeks of isolation, people are going to need things to remind them of normalcy. Without these things, whatever they are, many people will face serious depression.
Part of the healing process is distractions.
its_happening
The riots, I think, caused it.
AndyMeyer
There are many other avenues to heal yourself than sports. Just saying
The Human Toilet
Only way MLB will start back up is if effective treatments and testing continue to advance and get ahead of this. It is possible but nobody knows right now.
All we can do is wait and see

What percentage of revenue does television bring for a team with a average gate?
Ancient Pistol
Average ticket price across the league is about $50+ so do the math. Also, add in concessions etc.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Nothing gets back to anything close to normal until we have a few hundred million (possibly billions of) test kits. Particularly antibody testing because those who have them won’t need active virus testing.
Refusing the WHO test kits only to botch the CDC test kits put us so far behind, it’s unlikely we can catch up to where we need to be in the short term.
Ancient Pistol
You don’t need to test everyone, that’s unwise. You’d never be able to do it in an instantaneous manner. That’s how you’d have to do it but it’s impossible.
You need to test people who are high risk and those who show symptoms.
Vizionaire
if anyone shows symptoms why test? that person needs treatment not tests.
Ancient Pistol
That’s not how medicine works. Someone may show symptoms but may not have COVID-19 but a cold or the flu.
What you’re saying is akin to “That person has chest pains lets do a triple bypass.”
stwawk
Because most of the symptoms associated with Covid-19 are not exclusive to Covid-19. There are other viruses with a similar profile of symptoms.
Vizionaire
it looks like you need a brand new brain.
Koamalu
30% of people that have tested positive were asymptomatic. if you only test those that are symptomatic, then the virus will never be slowed.,

By logic, everyone in America would need to be tested which would be impossible. South Korea only tested a relatively small percentage of their population.
Vizionaire
the pres asked s. korean president moon for test kits and other medical supplies. but we are not alone asking for help. most of europe is trying to get help and supplies from them. by the way, the swedish experiment has failed.
Koamalu
Potus denied entry of test kits from S Korea because they are not FDA approved.
thetentman
All I know is that if the US is stuck in the house for the foreseeable future, they will watch MLB games on TV in droves. Ratings will skyrocket.
Vizionaire
if there are no games played are they going to refund for mlb tv?
thetentman
They refunded me for MLB Audio. Just call.
Vizionaire
good to know. thanks!
Pete'sView
I have already asked for my refund from MLB.tv. (I think they were hoping viewers would be satisfied with watching last year’s games. Maybe if you’re a Dodger or Yankee fan, but if you’re a Giants fan like me, you’ve seen enough of last season.)
So the lady at MLB.tv said I’d see the money credited back to my credit card within a week or so. I’ll be happy to renew—as I do every year—in 2021 or whenever a new season begins. But realistically, this season won’t be played.
stwawk
At some point in the near future, especially as temperatures warm, I don’t foresee the American public continuing to hunker down inside their homes until well into summer. The current state of affairs is unsustainable. Some people may not like hearing that because they’re either enjoying being confined to their homes or worried about their health, but it’s just the reality of it. To think otherwise would be setting oneself up for disappointment.
thetruth 2
Not foreseeable just brief.
vinnyh
I predicted more than a month ago (not here but my locals know) that there will not be a 2020 season, at all. There may be some kind of all-star games in the Fall if possible.
We will just have to start again in 2021 as if that’s our next season. #BeWell
thetruth 2
Well you’re wrong. It’s not feasible to lock people down that long.
vinnyh
I hope I’m wrong but we shall see. #BeWell
stwawk
The consensus among epidemiologists, most notably Fauci, is there won’t be a vaccine available for at least 12-18 months. Availability doesn’t mean everyone immediately gets it; the first round will likely go to those most at risk, and that does NOT include MLB players. That likely means the earliest a vaccine will be available to everyone who wants it will be fall 2021. So nevermind this season, what about NEXT season? It’s not like all the risks and implications of the pandemic are going to disappear.
Is MLB that myopic to not be considering the long-term consequences? And not just MLB, but society in general. They need to figure this out because the economy, and in particular baseball, can’t just go into hibernation for two years and then flip a switch and return to normalcy.
The Human Toilet
Cannot shutdown anything for the next 12-18 months while we wait for a vaccine, eventually the world has to get going again and does does sports. The hope is being on lockdown for the next 2 months, will slowdown the virus enough to get ahead of it and on the offensive end and at the same time not overwhelm the hospitals. In 2 months on the pace things are going, I believe the testing will be much improved and will be multiple treatments as well, right now just need time to get there.
jr.white
You guys are doing a really good job producing content in the midst of all that’s going on! Bravo!
renbutler
The ignorance here is appalling.
I don’t know when they’re coming back, but the best-case scenario is baseball activity in June with games starting July 4 — with little or no risk to fans and participants.
I wouldn’t call that likely, but it’s certainly a realistic possibility — far more likely than no season at all, assuming that intelligent heads prevail.
Just look at the actual numbers, and turn off the media outlets promoting fear, panic, and ignorance.
Koamalu
Here are the actual numbers.
Closed cases – 310,384
Deaths – 64,274
Recovered – 246,110
Mortality Rate = Deaths/Closed Cases
64,274 deaths out of 310,384 closed cases = 20.7% Mortality Rate
Until that number come down substantially, there will be no baseball or any other team sport.
Polish Hammer
Keep reposting it idiot, nobody saw it the first 12 times above…

So much misinformation and faux shaming in this comment section. The Corona virus known as sars-2 which is cause the COVID-19 is a mutations of a virus that has been around for quite a while. Pretty much all the recent contagion scares have been forms of Sars. Most people have gotren or will get this Corona virus. The vast majority will not even know they had it, or will have minor symptoms which resemble a bad cold or odd flu, because all colds are a Corona virus. The only reason we are sheltered in place (which is not a stay at home order or a quarintine) is because it is believed that it spreads so fast, that it will overwhelm our hospitals. The entire point of shelter in place isn’t to stop the spread, it’s to slow it. Once the data shows that it will be more manageable, it’s back to normal. Nobody is waiting until the virus is irradicated. Also, people are misunderatanding the reasoning behind the shelter in place order and the desire to flatten the curve. It has less to do with the people who have Corona virus, and more to do with their effect on the rest of our health Care system and hospitals. No healthy people have died of corona virus. Stop the political nonsense and stop reading fake news.
paule
“No healthy people have died of corona virus?'” That statement alone makes the rest of what you say, even those parts that make sense, very suspect.
Koamalu
Its not a mutation of a virus that has been around. Its a novel virus meaning it mutated from a virus that only effected animals. The human body has no defense against it.
Only 30% of people who have tested positive were asymptomatic. 20% of closed cases have ended in death.
Only 1/3 of all colds are attributable to any coronavirus.
People that were otherwise healthy have died of COVID-19. Its a respiratory disease, so if you have underlying respiratory diseases you are more likely to die, but many that are otherwise healthy have died and more will. ,
It is truly sad that you think its ok to spread false information that could potentially harm other people. What kind of a sick man are you?
Sid Bream
@ Koamalu You are spreading lies. This is a corona virus, and SARS was a corona virus. This is related to SARS-fact, SARS was a corona virus, this is a corona virus.. I suggest you read the American Society of Microbiology report from 2007 into SARS and read the last paragraph. You’ve been informed, stop spreading lies.
Furthermore, how do you know every single person’s primary cause of death was corona virus, if you believe the stats from the lying propagandist media then I will also consult my crystal ball like you have done.
AndyMeyer
Related to SARS only genetically. SARS was more deadly but less infectious

Interesting you keep reposting the same numbers and then post this link as your source. Same exact site somehow has your reported 20.7% mortality rate at an extremely lower number (2.3%):
“SARS-CoV-2 belongs to the same large family of viruses as SARS-CoV, known as coronaviruses, and was first identified in December 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The virus likely originated in bats, like SARS-CoV, and passed through an intermediate animal before infecting people.
Since its appearance, the virus has infected tens of thousands of people in China and thousands of others worldwide. The ongoing outbreak prompted an extensive quarantine of Wuhan and nearby cities, restrictions on travel to and from affected countries and a worldwide effort to develop diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.
The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, called COVID-19, has an estimated mortality rate of about 2.3%. People who are older or have underlying health conditions seem to be most at risk of having severe disease or complications. Common symptoms include fever, dry cough and shortness of breath, and the disease can progress to pneumonia in severe cases.”
brucenewton
Doesn’t take much to be considered non-healthy. Asthma sufferers appear healthy to most. Asthma sufferers are at high risk for pneumonia and death from this virus.

Let’s admit there’s a lot we don’t know right know and it doesn’t help to make things up. My guess is that things level off by July. It’s questionable but possible that we get baseball this year.

Agreed. All it does is promote fear.
beyou02215
We don’t know what things will look like in a month but IMO if playing without fans is not financially feasible, then I think it is much more likely than not that there won’t be a season. Let’s face it, secondary outbreak risk, etc., is likely to persist throughout the year, at least into the Fall. Fans won’t be going to stadiums/arenas for a long, long time.

Hope the players would be willing to take a pay cut when millions are losing their jobs…I’m still working and being cautious but I honestly don’t think that any of us know how this is going to pan out…seems kind of silly for everyone to be getting so hostile towards each other for differing opinions
