Latest On Aaron Judge, Other Injured Yankees

By Steve Adams | May 6, 2020 at 12:54pm CDT

May 6: In light of Boone’s comments yesterday, the New York Post’s Dan Martin reports that the club has privately been expecting a June or July recovery date for Judge. The slugger hasn’t experienced any setbacks along the way, per Martin, but it seems the organization has simply anticipated that his recovery process will be a fairly lengthy one.

May 5: Yankees skipper Aaron Boone provided updates on several injured Yankees in an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM earlier this morning (Twitter link, with audio).

Center fielder Aaron Hicks, on the mend from 2019 Tommy John surgery, is throwing from 90-plus feet and is taking soft toss from both sides of the plate as he continues his rehab. Hicks went under the knife about six and a half months ago and was initially slated for a timeline of eight to ten months. He’s “trending in a really good direction,” per Boone.

The outlook appears even brighter for lefty James Paxton and slugger Giancarlo Stanton. The former is now three months (to the day) removed from back surgery and is expected to be recovered by “mid-May,” per Boone. Paxton has tossed five bullpen sessions already and pitched a simulated game just yesterday. Stanton, meanwhile, is “doing really well and should be good to go whenever we get ready to go back.”

On Aaron Judge, the projection is a bit murkier. He’s slated to undergo another CT scan in “a couple more weeks,” which suggests that the right fielder’s fractured rib has not yet fully healed. Judge’s entire injury scenario has been shrouded in varying degrees of uncertainty. It took the club several weeks early in camp to diagnose the stress fracture in his rib, and only two weeks later did the team reveal that Judge was also found to have a collapsed lung. Near the end of March, Boone revealed that Judge’s injuries may have dated all the way back to last September. It’s been a frustrating saga for Yankees fans, and it seems there’s still no definitive timetable in place for the 28-year-old’s recovery — or at least not one they’re comfortable sharing publicly just yet.

I really like Aaron Judge, but he is so injury prone I wonder if giving him a long term contract makes sense?

          @metsuck898

Except for the fact that he’s under control for two more seasons after this (abbreviated) one. Why wouldn’t you wait until at least fall 2021 before talking extensions.

I really like Aaron Judge, but I don’t know whether his gargantuan frame can stand the rigours of him smashing himself against the small porches he benefits from. DH more? Yeah – alongside the 9 or so other needy DHs they’ve got – Sanchez, Voit, Stanton etc etc….

Much though it irks me to admit it, the Yanks were by far the 2nd most intriguing 2019 team (after the A’s of course) because every injury seemed to improve them. I think Judge kind of suffers for the injuries elsewhere and doesn’t get to DH and protect his body.

Flame away, by all means – but until you can protect him (from himself) a bit more I wouldn’t be throwing $200m of my money at him when he has two arb years left after this season….

Well if he hits 50+ plus on his walk year he will be getting a 10 year 350 million + contract. Sign him now and take the gamble Yankees could potentially save a lot $$$. He’s easily worth An easy 25 million over 8 years . After seeing what Harper and Machado got. Pay the man he’s a difference maker.

        • chino31

I rather throw 200 at Torres or Stanton. I am sure Sanchez will be traded eventually or let go as a free agent.

        • Metsuck898

People hate on Sanchez, but the guy per 162 averages 46 hrs. I can’t think of another catcher with that kind of offense.

        • walls17

They already gave 200 thrown at Stanton

        • Eatdust666

Yeah, you’ll have a hard time finding a catcher that can hit that many bombs, even though there are some other catchers that can hit for power, such as Garver, Grandal, Ramos, Perez and Realmuto, the latter of which is who you’ll want if you’re looking for an all around hitter.

        • rocky7

Don’t disagree but that 46 HR average over 162 os over multiple seasons and absolutely comes in streaks…..very, very rarely, if at all, did he hit when needed to last season…he was typically a pretty easy K!
As a boss of mine used to say…”lot of sizzle but very little steak”!
I’d take Realmuto (regardless of the age difference between the 2) all day long if the Phillies don’t lock him up long term over Sanchez…..

        • brucenewton

lol he’s not worth more than Yelich.

        • Metsuck898

Rocky it’s a close call but Sanchez hasn’t even reached his potential yet.. Realmuto cant carry a team offensively like Gary can. Not to mention I thought Gary looked good behind the plate last season. Definitely improved.

        • NY_Yankee

The Yankees have been drafting catchers as well as signing them in IFA. I suspect they do not consider Sanchez a player they will build around ( unlike Torres).

        • johnrealtime

@Metsuck898 Sanchez is 27 and a half right now. He’s got about 3 or 4 years before he falls off a cliff if he stays at catcher. He likely is who he is at this point

Giancarlo Stanton? the OF from the Marlins who is in a $325 million contract with 8 years left with $259 million left if he does noting but you think he’ll take $59 million less–and he’s 30 yrs old

Depends how long and what’s the price. Even playing 110 games, he’s still putting up 5+ WAR seasons. A 5-8 win player, even factoring in decline, is someone to keep if they can settle on the right price. That doesn’t even touch upon the business aspect. He’s the face of the franchise. Maybe the injuries can work to the Yankees advantage when trying to structure a deal. Not disagreeing with your point, but there’s a correct price. Maybe the two sides can find it.

WAR is such a BS stat. Wins above replacement. How do you whey the replacement player. Trout has no quality player who would replace him on that team in the OF .The same with Bellinger & Bregman. Also if it was a REAL stat then why are there no list for TEAM war. If wins make up war then the Dodgers & the Astros should have been in last years WS. Washington highest player was 15. DeGrom has 11 wins 8 loses with a war of 7.3 but that was 3 games over 500. and 11 wins in tied for 42. Pujols, according to WAR, the 31st-best baseball player of all time, he was good but not in the last 3 to 5 years, and if He’s soooo high on war & Trout is too, why are they a 500 team. useless stat

Listen, I would love the Yankees to lock up Judge for ridiculous dollars as a Sox fan, and that’s not a slight on Judge, he’s an MVP caliber player and excellent ambassador for MLB, but the fact remains players of his body type (see Stanton) have a very hard time remaining healthy, it’s just too great of a risk.

As for the folks advocating a Sanchez extension, you already have an overpaid DH in Stanton, and that what Sanchez’s ultimate ceiling is. He’s not a good catcher, he’s a human rain delay, who is too big physically to play long term behind the plate. Sure, you will deal with his defensive limitations while he hits bombs in bunches, but if he’s hitting .190, and striking out +150 times a year, at some point that will get tired.

If the Yankees are smart (and I believe they are) they lock up several lower tier players (think Urshela, LeMaheu) for team friendly deals. Those guys are the glue for your other superstars, and won’t force you to have to reset in 2022 while still providing excess value.

Even for big market teams, reckoning comes regarding the CBT, the teams that have sustained success learn to navigate this, or they become the 2020 Red Sox…
