White Sox, Jarred Kelenic Agree To Minor League Deal

By Nick Deeds | December 31, 2025 at 10:07am CDT

The White Sox are signing outfielder Jarred Kelenic to a minor league deal, according to a report from Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Kelenic’s deal includes a non-roster invitation to big league Spring Training in February.

Kelenic, 26, was drafted sixth-overall by the Mets back in 2018 and exploded to become a top-five prospect in the entire sport early in his pro career. Kelenic’s prospect status saw him shipped to the Mariners as part of the deal that brought Edwin Diaz to Queens, and at the time the deal was viewed as a coup for Seattle thanks to Kelenic’s star power. Unfortunately, the outfielder is now five years into his MLB career and has yet to put it all together at the major league level.

After hitting at a well below average level in 147 games across the 2021 and ’22 seasons, Kelenic finally seemed to be steadying himself in 2023. That year, he slashed a respectable .253/.327/.419 with a 110 wRC+ in 105 games. He swatted 11 homers with 25 doubles and swiped 13 bags in 18 attempts. While that combination of decent power and speed with a respectable 9.9% walk rate was encouraging, Kelenic was held back in a big way by strikeouts. His 31.7% strikeout rate would’ve been the fourth-highest in the majors that year if he had enough plate appearances to qualify, just ahead of Teoscar Hernandez and Eugenio Suarez for the team lead. That led the Mariners to try and retool their lineup with a larger focus on contact during the 2023-24 offseason, and part of that effort was a deal that shipped Kelenic to Atlanta that winter.

Joining the Braves offered Kelenic an opportunity for a fresh start, but he didn’t make much of an impact even in spite of receiving the lion’s share of playing time in left field. With Atlanta, Kelenic reached a career high in games played (131) and plate appearances (449) but managed a wRC+ of just 87 as his walk rate and BABIP both declined significantly while his strikeout rate remained at a much too high 29.6%. A .286 on-base percentage is hard to justify for a regular no matter how much power they provide, but Kelenic’s 15 homers and 35 total extra-base hits in 2024 certainly wasn’t going to cut it.

That led Atlanta to pivot away from using Kelenic in a starting role this past year, instead signing players like Jurickson Profar and Alex Verdugo to try and fill the hole in left field. A PED suspension for Profar and deep struggles from Verdugo were enough to get Kelenic another shot in the majors, but he struggled with that opportunity and hit just .167/.231/.300 in 24 games with a 47 wRC+ and a 35.7% strikeout rate. Those numbers were essentially unplayable at the major league level and left Kelenic to spend most of his time in the minors last year. Unfortunately, he also struggled for the club’s Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett. For the Stripers, Kelenic hit just .213/.286/.309 in 95 games. While Kelenic’s strikeout and on-base woes persisted last year, his power completely evaporated.

All of those struggles led the Braves to designate Kelenic for assignment earlier this year, and he elected minor league free agency back in October. The outfielder is more of a project than a surefire piece at this point in his career, but given that he’s still just 26 years old, it’s understandable for the rebuilding White Sox to take a gamble on a talent once so well-regarded. If Kelenic shows he has more in the tank, he’d likely compete for a job in right field with Brooks Baldwin as Luis Robert Jr. and Andrew Benintendi cover center field and left field respectively. A trade of Robert or even Benintendi can’t be ruled out given Chicago’s status as one of the league’s few rebuilding clubs, and a deal sending either of those two out of town would create a more substantial opportunity for Kelenic to get work in on the grass in the majors.

This is so sad and pathetic. The Sox sign another quad A player.

Worst of all I’ll bet he ends up playing a lot for the Sox this year with predictable results.

At his age, it won’t be the last opportunity if he shows any promise at all. Think about Mickey Moniak’s 2025, his 7th year in MLB after going with the 1st overall pick way back when.

Hope springs eternal in baseball. Which is one reason it is such a great sport. Happy New Year all!

Disagree with you totally. Being a Nats fans is like swatting real gnats away from your face. I loved watching James Wood lolly-gagging to 1st on a groundnout, when White Sox players were busting their butts to 1st base during a game between them, I don’t think Wood ever made it to 1st. He just peeled off. That shows his laziness and not caring while stealing money from the club, especially from teammates. Let’s compare after 2026

Only bad players hustle down the line on hopeless groundouts. Your best players don’t need to risk their hamstrings when they’ll be thrown out by 10 feet.

White Sox have several very good young players on their roster, and if a few of them take the next step this season, and they probably will, the win-loss record could dramatically improve. The Nats come across as more stagnant, though fans can hope their new leadership makes a difference.

Wrong. It’s not hopeless until the out is recorded. You don’t know in advance when the ball will be bobbled or dropped. Respect the game, please. By your reasoning if a ball is hit towards the gap and your team is behind by 4 runs in the 8th, it’s ok to jog over and just let the hitter pull into second uncontested. After all, you might pull a hammy hustling to pick the ball up and you might blow out your shoulder making a hard throw to second.

I was hoping @seacaptain77 was throwing some humor into things but I’m not so sure. Given that logic, they might as well adopt the thinking of Super level slow pitch softball. Hit a home run and just toss the bat and go have a seat. No reason to run the bases and stub a toe
@NewOrleansSantsFan described the O’Neill Cruz style quite well for us Pirates fans. But every 7 or 8 games, he’ll hit a homer with extreme exit velocity that local broadcasters will fall all over themselves talking about for a week, so it’s all forgotten
I dunno. All I want as a fan is a team full of guys who hustle like their hair is on fire, plays fundamentally sound ball and hates losing. I guess I’m a dinosaur when only losers hustle because they “don’t have to”

The team being praised for hustling was the Chicago White Sox, the 2nd worst team in baseball. So, yes, marginal ballplayers hustle.

Give me a team of Juan Sotos and Ken Griffey Jrs. You can have Ryan Freels and Willie Bloomquists.

Soto is a great player with some flaws. One is that he doesn’t hustle. I hate the way he stays at the plate and watches his long flies, some of which don’t clear the wall and end up being long singles. It’s ridiculous to hold him up as an example of why hustle is outdated.

I wouldn’t call an All-Star lazy because he doesn’t hustle out routine groundballs, that may cost a guy a base once every several years. Wood works hard enough on his game to be a good enough ballplayer that his team would rather he not risk a hamstring.

I respect a guy who hustles, but All-Stars need to stay healthy

No he isn’t. He was top 5 in the entire league in OPS from June 1 to the end of the year in 2025. He had a poor April and May which dragged his numbers down. There are a lot of players that play poorly in spring in Colorado because of the cold weather and occasional snowfall. And did not play well in LF and CF. But he did fine in RF. He had to play a lot of CF in the spring due to Doyle’s injury and family issues. The biggest problem was the Rockies using him in all three positions because Tyler Freeman was even worse defensively and could only play right. So Moniak bounced around from game to game. I’m not claiming he will ever win a Gold Glove or anything, but he played much better than the numbers show in 2025.

Makes me wonder how some guys take it to the next level and some guys fizzle. The raw talent and physical ability are still there; he just hasn’t flourished like most of us thought he would.

My guess is he’s a depth piece and chief option if the Sox trade Robert. Considering it’d be a successful season if they hit 70-75 wins, I don’t mind them taking a low-cost flier on him.

Easy baseball is a mental game. Now the sport has many mental coaches to help. As a kid I always thought athletes were strong mentally. Yet it you listen to old players they talk of being scared or wondering if they belong. The old principal of the strongest survives is being refined. Hopefully it works out for him and others who get multiple opportunities

A lot of people, it seems especially guys, suffer from imposter syndrome. Ironically, giving into it makes it a self-fulfilling prophecy. Not sure that’s what happened here, but if the raw tools are there, it’s likely either mechanics or in his head.

Some guys are there own worst enemy too, whether it is in their head or not taking instruction or criticism well.

I always said hitting or pitching coaches (or teammates in some cases) basically say the same thing, it’s whether they are ready to listen yet or ever.

Agreed. And it’s hard enough refining guys in the high minors let alone at the MLB level. In Pittsburgh, a lot of fans carp about poor hitting coaches being the culprit behind our anemic offense. But it’s likely Charley Lau would fail with most of these guys if he were to come back from the dead

Yeah, Knuckledagger Nevin caused all of that because there was some high and tight pitch to Trout the night before. Except Nevin was too stupid to realize (1) it was the bottom of the 9th and the tying run was on deck so why would Seattle choose then to buzz Trout? and (2) Scott Servais was definitely not a hot-head retaliator. I know because I kinda am and Servais never gave in to my worst urges!

The brawl wasn’t the only reason. Winker basically did nothing for the team except draw a few walks. He couldn’t field, couldn’t hit, etc. It came out that he also wasn’t putting in the same amount of effort during practices in between games either, which led to his poor performance that year.

Wild to see comments gainfully cheering for this guy’s failure, when he’s basically having to ball out by himself to get any chance of success.

Well if he was in the real workforce, he’d have to settle on flipping burgers at Burger King. Might make manager there.

Calling this “settling” ignores that he’s already reached the majors and is still getting opportunities. That’s how pro baseball works. It’s a pretty normal sports path.

Being a professional athlete is also considered “real”.

You don’t feel superior by comparing a common job to a professional sports athlete, if anything, it shows your jealousy.

Kelenic just seems to have a bad attitude. From feeling entitled to a big league spot in 2020, to his constant nagging on umpires for calling a strike a strike, to breaking his foot during his breakout because he struck out.

He hasn’t really endeared himself to people. Hopefully he’s maturing.

It’s fair to judge how attitude affects performance or development. It’s less fair to expect players to manage fan perception. his job is to play baseball, not be likable.

Surprisingly that Braves/Mariners trade was a negative for both teams. Atlanta took on salary to get Kelenic, and he never really got the bat going. And the two arms they gave up? Kowar a -0.2 fWAR and Phillips is on his second Tommy John and has never pitched in the minors.

For Seattle, the trade was all about dumping Marco and Whites salary as they were never going to play for them again and moving on from Kelenic. Both pitchers they received were injured and I doubt they ever cared if either pitched for them. Phillips is already gone from their organization too. It was a positive for M’s.

SEA got out from under Marco Gonzales & Evan White’s contracts. Neither played for ATL, while Marco was traded 2 days later to PIT for cash and the ever-popular PTBNL.

From Mariners to Braves: Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzales, Evan White, and cash.

From Braves to Mariners: Jackson Kowar, Cole Phillips.

Mariners’ Motivation: To save significant payroll by shedding the contracts of Gonzales and White, freeing up money for future moves.

Braves’ Motivation: To acquire a high-upside, young outfielder (Kelenic) who had shown flashes of potential despite never fully breaking out in Seattle.

When Kelenic was in ATL, there were brief glimpses where he showed why he was a top-five prospect. Unfortunately, those runs were too few in between. I didn’t follow him when he was with NYM or SEA, but I’m sure it was the same, given he’s been moved around. Not a bad move for CHI if they need some insurance in their outfield. CHI got a much better deal than the Braves!

Statcast Outs Above Average (OAA) in 2024 w/ ATL was around -3 to -4. He’s got a cannon of an arm and will occasionally wind up on a web gem. I’d say more of an AVG cornerfielder. I only recall him playing CF in ATL briefly. He’s got youth and legs, not sure I’d put him in CF though.

If you look deeply at the statistics and consider some of the deeper more nuanced numbers you’ll see that most teams use more than 1 outfielder in a season. Many actually use 5-6 in a season. And there are now 2 outfielders in Chicago with a 2+ WAR season in the last three years and one of them did it in the hardest stadium to hit in.

Kelenic can’t get out of his own head and dwells on failures. Hence the broken foot when he kicked a cooler. With the Mariners, it was obvious that he needed some good therapy, but either he didn’t (because of macho crap) or wouldn’t listen (because of macho crap). Always stressed, always pressing, couldn’t deal with the game, which is naturally filled with failures. Can’t seem to forget and move on.

Bought the pennant with this move. I was hoping the Sox would pay down Benintendi’s contract and ship him out for any pitching or lottery ticket position players they could scrounge. It would free up the at bats for all the other outfielder’s they’ve acquired to see if any are for real. Would hope to see them filter out some of these flyers while they are still trying to climb into respectability.

Is it a psychological thing or a vision problem? So much talent so little success. He needs to recognize breaking balls and offspeed pitches better. In his first mlb season he just sat on fastballs and scouting reports know that. Reading pitches out of the pitcher’s hand (often called early pitch recognition) is one of the most trainable yet under-emphasized skills in hitting. It involves picking up cues from the release point, arm slot, spin, and initial ball flight to identify pitch type and location quickly. GameSense Sports app/programs — Not a single coach, but endorsed by many instructors for video-based occlusion training (pitches cut off early to force recognition from release). It’s praised for building perceptual skills without needing live arms. Coach Matt Lisle (The Hitting Vault) — He worked with MLB hitters and emphasizes seeing thousands of live pitches (e.g., tracking in bullpens) as the foundation for elite recognition. His approach is practical and scalable from youth to pro, stressing that top pros excel because they’ve seen massive pitch volumes. His videos and programs directly address offseason pitch recognition training. If kelenic wants to succeed in majors he needs to learn elite pitch reading.
