Giants Announce Initial Player Pool

By Steve Adams | June 29, 2020 at 2:00pm CDT

The Giants on Monday announced their initial player pool for the 2020 season. Pools can contain up to 60 players, and only players in a team’s pool will be eligible to participate in summer training camp or regular/postseason games. Teams are free to change the makeup of the pools as they see fit, but once a team’s pool reaches 60 players, a player must be removed (released, traded, waived, etc.) in order to make a new addition. That player becomes ineligible to return to that same team in 2020.

Not all players within a team’s pool are ticketed for MLB playing time, of course. Most teams will include well-regarded but still far-off prospects as a means of getting them training reps with no intention of running them onto a major league diamond this season. A comprehensive review of 2020’s unique set of rules can be found here.

Here are the 51 players in the Giants’ initial pool (* indicates player not on 40-man roster)…

I thought they’d already dropped Joey Rickard and surprised new draft pick, Patrick Bailey’s not on the list but both Brantly and Heinemen are.

But, boy, this is going to be a pretty sad rotation.

Of course. Thanks. In fact, I’ve noticed that the Giants have been particularly slow to sign anyone.

Heineman and Brantly showed well in the few ST games that they were in if I recall, and as someone mentioned above me Bailey hasn’t signed.

Posey, Belt, Crawford, Sandoval and Pence. Would be one hell of a team if it were still 2014.

Belt will get some homers with the new dimensions. And he won’t start vs lefties. Crawford is done with the bat. Sandoval is great off the bench.

i think Crawford could well do better this year if not with the bat with the glove since they spent a lot of time going over metrics and you are likely to see him on the left side of 2nd all season. In ST before it was shutyou would see positioning where when a right shift happened you would see longo slide to the 2nd base position and the 2nd basemen go to the OF with crawford @3rd to take advantage of def metrics

It’ll mash lefties. Hopefully they’ll be able to do some damage against righties with more time off. Bullpen is the key, but Coonrod, Rogers, Garcia all had good years last seasons and Gott showed a lot.

I’m generally not worried about the lineup. 8 above average hitters by OPS+ last year before adding Bart (and hopefully Puig). Bullpen will be the key like it is with almost every team.

Flores, Pence and Sandoval mashed lefties last year, before we mention dudes like Bart, Puig and Ruf. You can check the platoon splits or be wrong. You’re choice.

This comment about ‘mashing righties’ is idiotic. Pence , Flores , Sandoval don’t mash from the right side. Lol.
As hitters In the NL West they pale in comparison to guys that legitimately‘ Mash’ from the right side.

          Betts
          Machado
          Turner
          Arenado
          Story
          Ketel Marte
          Tatis Jr

Pence , Sandoval are old washed up B guys that can’t play every day. Flores is another B guy
