Blue Jays Denied Canadian Approval To Play Games In Toronto

By George Miller | July 18, 2020 at 1:57pm CDT

The Canadian government has denied the Blue Jays approval to play games in their home city of Toronto during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report from Rob Gillies of the Associated Press. While the Blue Jays were given the go-ahead by the city of Toronto and the province of Ontario to host regular season games at the Rogers Centre, they were still awaiting clearance from the Canadian federal government.

As of now, the likely outcome is that the Blue Jays pivot their regular season games to Buffalo, the home of the franchise’s Triple-A affiliate. Dunedin, Florida, where the team holds Spring Training, has also been floated as an alternative, though Buffalo now looks preferable given the state of the virus in Florida.

In an official team statement, the Blue Jays said they are “in the process of finalizing the best home location for the remainder of the 2020 season and will share an update as soon as it is available.”

This development comes as something of a surprise, as just days ago it was looking like a good bet that the Rogers Centre would host regular season games as intended this year. However, shuttling MLB teams back and forth across the U.S.-Canada border poses undeniable concerns about preventing the spread of COVID-19, which have only been heightened in light of diverging COVID-19 trends between the United States and our neighbors to the North.

As reported by Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet, the Canadian government has informed the Blue Jays that it would be “open to considering future restart plans for the post-season” if at that time risk of virus transmission has been tempered. But for the time being, it’s looking like Toronto will have to wait until 2021 for Blue Jays home baseball.

Get outta here lad, if you’re gonna say that look at what the Nats are potentially doing??? (Not playing in DC because of Covid-19) Gov’t over rules a damn sports league. Yeah, it’d be great if they were to play at home. But I support my government’s decision on this; even though my Yankees and mostly every other team is playing in their home park.

A joke? You know what’s a joke is how America and baseball is treating Covid. Season won’t make it to the end, their only chance would have been to do the hub city system. I fully support not allowing the jays to play in Canada even though their in a bubble still have people constantly coming and going don’t need to spread the virus just because a ball player sneaks out to the bars. Exponential growth is a scary thing

There will ALWAYS be hockey in Canada. Baseball (correctly or not) is considered America’s pastime. Canada doesn’t share that affinity, so it’s easy to tell the Jays to kick rocks.

Sounds like a good move by Canada. You have quarantine on people coming from a country with a HUGE COVID-19 problem.

It would not make any sense to give a ‘pass’ to 30-40 baseball players/staff to travel in and out of the country and bypass the quarantine that Canada has on people entering from plague-infested countries like the US.

Once the blue jays leave they travel into infected areas and can come back with the virus. Canada would mandate people doing that quarantine, but the season structure obviously will not allow that.

Completely different. Almost Half the teams will be gone in a week of starting up. And a hub city works better as they don’t have to travel which seems to be one of the main ways people come into contact with the virus.

Well, not surprised but I expected it. The Jays are Canada’s only team and it’s clear that the government and many of the fans don’t want them to play there. You will see that with many of the posters here. You can pretty much forget about Canada ever getting another MLB team. If they can’t support the one they have, why should they receive another? In fact, MLB should look into relocating the Jays to a city that would actually support them? Nashville badly wants a team and maybe they would be a good fit there? Canada can just start their own version of baseball, kind of like they did with football and the CFL.

It totally does. Players are often acquired based on the stadium they play in. Players have homes in Toronto. Many are only for the season but it’s still their home filled with their things. Now they have to spend the next two plus months living in a hotel. That’s got to wear on you.

The government and the fans fully support the team. Maybe you missed the nationwide response when the Jays were in the playoffs a few years ago. This isn’t about support, it’s about public health and a very contagious virus. The NBA & NHL are doing it right by eliminating travel. Canada has the virus fairly under control and it’s out of control in the US. We’ve closed our border to the States because of this. So allowing back and forth border crossings for baseball players exclusively would be unfair, irresponsible and most importantly, potentially dangerous. I’d love for the Jays to have every advantage and play here, but I agree they shouldn’t. Having a responsible government shouldn’t disqualify this country from representation in major sports.

I know this is hard to believe but I’m sure a multi billion dollar Canadian telecommunications company might have a camera man or 2 down in the state’s. How else are games filmed in Florida, you think Rogers flies Canadians down south for a month or 2? And if big brother is deemed an essential service thing Rogers might be able to set up the jays somewhere and get it on tv

Rogers, richest owners in baseball. Rogers, bought the team at the end of the 2000 season.

Rogers, never once have they come close to being #1 in payroll. Blue Jays, reached the postseason twice since 1993. Bigdaddy pointed out the Jays being #1 in payroll in 1993. Rogers did not own the team. By using an example of payroll by another owner he effectively admits Rogers hasn’t spent to win and created a false narrative believing Rogers was the reason 1993 happened.

My point was Rogers hasn’t spent like a powerhouse they are capable of. That guy mentioned 1993. Rogers did not own the team until 2000. Rogers cannot be given credit for 1993. They chose not to be a powerhouse player. I pointed this out, YOU took exception. All because you didn’t read what was said. Meanwhile accusing me of trolling? What are you doing here???

I never said Canada does not support the team. That was your awful assumption. Toronto has all of Canada supporting them. Your assumption was patently false and completely unfair.

The point: the richest owners in baseball should ACT like the richest owners in baseball. When they begin chasing a World Series I expect this team to be tops in spending. But please tell me how Rogers did as non-owners of the 1993 team.

So will this be the death of baseball in Canada? Does Rogers look to sell and the team moves because they can’t play in their own stadium and won’t have an easy time figuring out how to air games in their home market?

I could see them moving in a few years if the TV revenue is lost because TSN doesn’t operate outside of Canada and it would be a logistical nightmare to try to broadcast games from the US side when TV crews would be considered nonessential and therefore prohibited from crossing the border.

No? What difference does it make if they play in Buffalo or play in Toronto if there are no fans attending the games to begin with – it can be televised just the same. It wouldn’t even cause an issue with the TV crews, because with all games being played in the US, they can just leave the essential TV crews south of the border until the season is over – no reason to have them crossing back and forth when there will be a Jays game played in a US city literally every day for 2 months.

TV crews from Canada would not be permitted to enter the US based on current guidelines set forth by both countries which bans all travel that is non-essential. TV crews are not essential, therefore nobody from Canada would be able to enter the US to broadcast the games.

Toronto won’t even be able to get their own broadcasters into the country under current restrictions. How do you not understand how the current laws work?

Even if they can’t get an exemption to get their own TV crews in (which I doubt if they follow an isolation protocol for the first X days), I still don’t think it matters. The opposing team will have a TV feed, and Rogers could have their own commentators call the game from a studio in Toronto. It’s not like there’s any real advantage to physically being in the stadium to call a game (you can actually see the action better on a videotron/TV screen), especially with no fans in the stands.

@AllRiseForTheJudge Living proudly in Canada all of my life I am happy to report that we have finally emerged from our igloo and now live in a wooden and concrete structure called a house here in these parts. We also are blessed with electronic equipment powered not by guinea pig but by electricity of which we sell LOTS to the US of America. As well, tonight I am going to watch my favourite team NY Yankees play an exhibition game vs NY Mets. Seems Canada has some sort of agreement with ESPN who are supplying the original coverage and TSN is picking it up. So don’t need Rogers TV crews or anymore assistance from you to make this happen consistently during any regular scheduled games should they actually be played. Thanks for your concern though.

I would imagine most team broadcasters will be calling road games from the studios this season regardless of where they play, so the broadcaster issues are not a concern. In fact, the Mets broadcasters today were discussing this on Saturday – the Sunday exhibition from Yankee Stadium will be broadcast remotely from Citi Field.

Irrelevant. I’m not Canadian nor a Jays fan, therefore it is not my responsibility to know, nor is it relevant to me, which network airs their games. The fact is that Canadian media lacks US press privileges as they are not considered essential during a pandemic travel ban

Only citizens from either country and those deemed to be on essential business are permitted to cross the border at this time. The Jays have been given an exemption to enter into the US with essential personnel only. That means players, coaches, and medical staff. Possibly scouts and the GM. Possibly.

That does not include Canadian press, broadcasters, or TV crews. So how are they going to air games in Canada when they’re playing outside the US?

        • snowles

Most of the Jays staff and players are American. Crossing the border is a condition of citizenship, not what baseball team you play for lol.

As for how the games can be broadcast, that has been explained succinctly by tibberia. Somehow equating this to the death of baseball in Canada? Asinine.

And FYI, NBC is doing all of the broadcasting for the Eastern Conference hub teams in the NHL, including their broadcasting and television crews. NBC based out of New York. Toronto as the eastern hub city.

They will air the games similar to how they would air their away games, and the way they traditionally air their away games.
You realize they don’t play every game at home?

Not Canadian, nor a Jays fan, therefore your opinion is not relevant to me.
The company that owns the team is the company that broadcasts the games. Direct competitor to TSN. That is a huge piece of information to discard.

Exemptions can possibly be granted for a skeleton broadcast crew. Possibly.
          More likely than scouts.

The MLB, government and Rogers could possibly come up with a solution.
Or maybe Rogers will have to get creative and have broadcasts from a distance. It really doesn’t matter where the broadcasters are, they will have a feed. KBO for example.
Sportsnet owns the MLB broadcast rights in Canada, and subcontracts the ESPN games to TSN. On the Sportsnet regional feeds, they tend to play a lot of regional sportsnet feeds from US teams throughout the year, so I’d imagine there is an ease of access to get a crew to wherever they end up playing.

The judge is ignorant. TSN not involved with the Jays at all. Roger’s owns the club, their Sportsnet network owns the Canadian TV rights. It’s a very strong broadcast product here, making them lots of money. When we get past these Covid times, it will all be fine for Canada’s lone MLB team who will stay here forever.

I’m not defending the US numbers or anything like that, but it’s a lot easier for a country like Canada to contain it than the U.S. This virus hits highly dense and populated areas hard. Canada is 11 people per square mile while the US is 94. Canada has very few densely populated areas.

Population density does not even begin to explain how colossally the US has botched this. European and Asian countries with much higher population densities (Japan is like 900 people per square mile and South Korea is like 1300) have controlled the virus.

The US has just been failed by politicians (all around; the blame goes way beyond party) and leaders and people who think they’re smarter than experts. Just a trainwreck of idiocy.

Who care’s about an economy when you’re dead?

Canadians don’t want Americans coming to this country if they’re going to be spreading an infectious disease around and not shutting down.

Texas and Florida, are getting 10k-15k people test positive for the virus every day and the death rates are climbing into a couple hundred each day now after they were flat at 50 a few weeks ago before the re-openings at the end of April.

Canada doesn’t need untold deaths because a few people wanted to watch baseball at an empty stadium.

There weren’t going to be any fans in the Stadium anyways with a global pandemic ravaging the entire world. So I don’t see the point of caring.

Without everyone being forced into a bubble I don’t think anyone should trust the players coming in from say Florida and Texas to not visit a bar or restaurant and infect people.

Florida and Texas specifically are having 10-15k people test positive for the virus a day, with the death totals hitting 200 a day now after they were at 40-50 a few weeks ago.

If anyone remembers New York’s COVID deaths, it spikes weeks after getting the virus.

I just don’t understand why it took them so long to make this decision. Baseball starts next week. They need to find adequate housing in Buffalo for the players now (good luck with that)! They will be able to send their broadcast crew with them so long as they stay in America for the entire 2+ months. They are essential to the team; they just won’t be sending reporters with them.

Politics takes time laddie and baseball isn’t a huge national issue for Canada. Not playing in Toronto stops one vector from entering Canada and it makes them happy so more power to them. MLB players are probably the top 5 most frequently tested people in the country, so the impact was likely very small.

The good thing is that it happened now before the season and they can settle in elsewhere. Buffalo has a benefit of being the third team in NYS which has a horrific historical death rate – 2nd worst in the world plus ~15 states on their quarantine list. Bring in the same state as NYY and NYM gives them some flexibility if / when states like NY and CA close the boarders mid season or Florida has to close down baseball due to not just large numbers of cases, but actual repercussions from those cases.
Right now with 1 million more people than NYS Florida only has 1 / 7th the number of deaths (~ 4600 vs 32000 http://www.statistica.com). So it’s hard to tell how they’ll contain current surge and if that impacts MLB Eastern teams playing in Florida.

A month ago I said NY, CA and Canada would be difficult places to run the business of baseball. One down and two to go.

AZ and Florida are now seeing their surge after historically having a fraction (order of magnitude 1/8, 1/10) of the deaths that of NY of the NY, NJ, Ct & MA have. Their success in mitigating the surge and/ or MLB success in avoiding it are going to be season risking issues.

First, everyone in this country has made sacrifices to help lower cases. It only takes one weak link to break that progress. If one province or city starts increasing, that poses risks to everyone travelling from one place to another in Canada. It’s not just Toronto we have to think about. It’s everyone.

Second, we weren’t allowed to go see them play anyway, so for us, it doesn’t matter.

Third, if there is any way Buffalo will let in limited fans, then i’m really happy for Buffalo getting the games. They are our unofficial sister city and they deserve to get some major league ball.
