Ken Giles Shut Down Due To Forearm Strain

By Jeff Todd | July 28, 2020 at 3:05pm CDT

July 28: Giles has been “shut down” for awhile after being diagnosed with a forearm strain, manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters Tuesday (Twitter link via Mitchell). He’s getting a second opinion on the injury.

July 27: The Blue Jays announced today that closer Ken Giles is heading to the injured list, Scott Mitchell of TSN was among those to cover on Twitter. He is still awaiting the results of an MRI on his injured right elbow.

Two new arms will head onto the Toronto roster: Ryan Borucki and Wilmer Font. The club had another opening because infielder Travis Shaw is temporarily away due to a family matter.

It remains to be seen just how significant an issue Giles is dealing with, but the team is obviously concerned enough not only to order an MRI but also to go ahead with an IL placement. The righty dealt with elbow problems last year as well, though he was ultimately able to work back to the mound.

Even a relatively minor injury could doom any thought of a mid-season trade of Giles. He has long seemed a candidate to be dealt, but the Jays evidently never received a good enough offer to make a move. It’s even rougher news for Giles, who’ll hit the open market at season’s end.

Take all the time you need, Travis.

Need Borucki on the team. Jays need more arms they can stretch out for multiple innings.

Unpopular opinion, but I would experiment with Gurriel at 3B. Opens an OF spot for at bats. Would rather see one of the OFs get more at bats than Panik or Drury. Drury can play 3B when a lefty is on the mound.

For Anthony Alford or Derek Fisher?

Whomever. Probably Fisher against RH, Alford LH with Teoscar DH’ing and Vlad at 1B. Something like that. I wouldn’t necessarily make Fisher the automatic. You could play McKinney, close your eyes and hope for the best.

he couldnt play 2nd because of the yips so you think a solution to that is take Gurriel out of a position he feels comfortable in with a team full of infield talent so that derek fisher can get a couple more at bats?

BigDaddy if you ever played baseball you would know throwing from the right side of the infield was much different than the left side of the infield. Comparing second base and third is weak.

The Jays need to cut some dead weight, or make a trade in August. Guys like Fisher need at bats. Blue Jays see him as a solution, I do not. But he needs to prove that he isn’t. Blue Jays have also stated they see Gurriel as a utility type player even after the LF switch. So yes, moving him to 3rd base a couple times a week isn’t the worst idea. I’d also argue he’s not all that comfortable in LF. Still takes bad routes to balls. Not exactly comfortable.

Interesting if we had Gurriel available at 3B and LF. He has a good arm but I don’t see them moving him right now.
I could see them working on that throughout this offseason.
We’re too thin in the OF especially with Grichuk’s back…

I don’t see that move happening either. I prefaced by saying it’s an unpopular opinion. An OF bat could be needed next year if Grichuk is the guy to play CF. Martin’s at least a year away. 3B is another spot. Another unpopular opinion is calling Colorado about Arenado. Have them eat a little salary.

They’re certainly going to have to address it moving forward. It’s the most fluid part of the team so guys like Dolis and Bass or others could become “guys”, but after this year Romano looks like he could be the only legit arm they have.

Does anybody know how long of a quarantine Travis Shaw will need to go through once he has resolved his family matter before he can rejoin the active roster?

He’s toast. Hard throwers like Giles rarely can do what he does for multiple years. The body just wears down unless you are a freak of nature like Nolan Ryan. Giles will need Tommy john. Career over.

Probably doesn’t help when you throw an additional 10 or so pitches once it’s clear there’s a problem.

I really feel for the guy. He’s been hurt and he just wants to help and pitch and be there for his team. Getting hurt is so frustrating. He probably felt so terrible that he knew something was up and couldn’t bring himself to face it again.

Because no hard throwing pitcher has ever come back from TJS…

I’m legit tired of this “hard throwers get TJ” bs that idiots keep spouting. There is no correlation with velo and TJ.

If Im a Jays fan I look at it like this…. Im sure glad this happened this year before we put ink to paper in the offseason

Always been a fan of Giles when on the field but ida never inked him to a multi year contract at really any point in his career – That arms been a time-bomb for years

I’d give Dolis a shot, some guys excel in the closer role (pressure, high intensity), yet they struggle in the set up role. Dolis was a top closer in Japan, sure different talent, but a below average Major League reliever doesn’t just become and amazing closer, it might be the role he is/was being used in.
