Freddie Freeman, Three Other Braves Test Positive For COVID-19

By TC Zencka | July 4, 2020 at 10:43am CDT

A quartet of Atlanta Braves tested positive for COVID-19: Freddie Freeman, Pete Kozma, Touki Toussaint, and Will Smith, per Sportscaster Kelly Crull. Though the teams do not have to release the names of the players who test positive for coronavirus, in this case, the players consented to have their names released in order to spread awareness.

Smith and Toussaint are asymptomatic at this time. Freeman tested negative upon intake, but started developing symptoms before workouts were to begin, per The Athletic’s David O’Brien. Since it appears Freeman caught the virus while at Braves’ camp, this will be an important situation to track.

Not to mention, it’s possibly a blow to the Braves on-field expectations for 2020. There’s no telling how severe a case Freeman is dealing with, and even after he’s back to full health, he’ll need to pass the new protocols to return to play. Freeman, 30, is the longest-tenured member of the Braves. When he made his debut in 2010, Chipper Jones, David Ross, Derek Lowe, Jason Heyward, Tim Hudson, Craig Kimbrel, and Brian McCann were still a part of the team.

Though it seems like he’s been around forever, Freeman still produces like a superstar. He hit .295/.389/.549 even while dealing with an elbow injury that sapped him of some power.

Smith, meanwhile, could return earlier if he remains asymptomatic, but it’s important to remember that anybody appearing without symptoms who test positive could simply be pre-symptomatic, at which point there’s no telling yet what kind of timetable for a return might be. Smith was to be an important piece of Atlanta’s bullpen after joining the club from San Francisco via free agency. As the Giants’ closer last year, Smith went 6-0 with 34 saves and a 2.76 ERA/3.23 FIP over 60 games.

Toussaint had an outside shot at winning a spot in the Atlanta bullpen, though he figured to join the big league club at some point during the season as he has in each of the past two campaigns. Kozma was to serve as a depth infield option after playing all of 2019 for the Tigers’ Triple-A club.

Two counties in texas just issued ‘shelter in place’ orders because hospitals have reached full capacity. This is when the deaths will start.

If you want to keep insisting this isn’t a problem, go ahead and be ignorant. But it’s not about the odds of young and healthy people dying, it’s the risk of them infecting more vulnerable people, like the elderly, those with diabetes, heart conditions, and other auto-immune disorders.

The reason the US has been so hard hit is that we are a country so focused on individualism, and unwilling to consider the collective good and look out for our neighbors.

Well said, Wiffleball. It’s crazy the number of people in this country who ignore evidence and experts and think they know better. People ignore medical doctors and pandemic experts in favor of their preferred politicians or pundits who have no qualifications.

Almost every other country has this under control. We have dozens of examples to follow and you still have people complaining about masks and social distancing. Tens of thousands of people listening to Joe Rogan and Brandon Schwab or Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott. Maddening.

The hospitals are over run because they laid off workers and everyone is starting to get elective surgery done now that they couldn’t 3 months ago. The media scares the crap out of everyone so when people get a cough they rush to the ER. My father in law had and he was 70 and a cancer survivor. I had it and I’m diabetic. I was sick for a day. So keep keep driving in your car alone with your cloth mask that does nothing

More disinformation and downplaying of COVID. Hospitals are overrun because there are many more people who have COVID. This is a fact. Your assertion that it’s because of an uptick in elective procedures is a lie. It is not backed up by any evidence whatsoever. You are lying and spreading disinformation.

The virus affects different people in different ways. Only a fool would think that their own, personal experience with something translates into everyone’s experience.

I’m glad that a diabetic like you ended up being fine, but that’s not everyone’s experience. Perfectly healthy, young people have died from it. This is a fact.

And wearing a mask cuts down on the virus spreading. This is another fact. Stop downplaying COVID. You are not only wrong, but you’re contributing to the spread of it. If we don’t have baseball this year, it will be because of people like you spreading this garbage around.

@AFK, I call BS! No, the cloth masks don’t protect the wearer like an N95. They have proven to protect OTHERS from the wearers’ breathing/aerosols/spittle. They also have a mild protective effect for the wearer. But you wear it to protect others from yourself (if you give a s**t about anyone but yourself).

        • Admiraltrey

          AFK711,

Exactly this, and actually those masks are probably worse than not wearing a mask at all because it gives people a false sense of safety. They believe they’re doing their part because they have a mask on, so it’s fine to go out and behave normally, and others around them see the mask and figure it’s safe, too. But it isn’t.
Not to mention all the “safe, caring” people who wear a mask and literally pull it off their faces to have conversations in person or on the phone. They’re no different than people with no mask at all, they just appear to be “doing their part”. It’s absurd.

I was on the fence about the effectiveness of masks but since I live in Boston, MA, one of the hardest hit areas in the country, (#3 overall state in total deaths) I have seen first hand how effective wearing masks and social distancing can be.

The governor put a mask order in place about 2 months ago, and since that time, the infection rates and deaths are WAY down in MA. In fact, MA has been one of the least impacted states in the country over the last 60 days. Everyone has been, and still continues to wear masks. Even the heroin addicts in Boston are wearing them as the stumble down the streets. I don’t go anywhere in public without a mask now and will continue to wear one for the foreseeable future as it’s clear to us in MA how effective they truly are. I just don’t understand why so many people are opposed to wearing them. It’s perfectly clear they prevent the spread of the disease and ultimately save lives too. As one of the few Republicans in MA, I believe in all of the freedoms that our Constitution grants us as citizens, but if you truly care about your fellow man, neighbor, family etc.. you’ll stop being so pigheaded, put on a mask and help our country get this under control. We all want the country to reopen, see our sports teams back in action and want to get back to work too. Until a vaccine is available, why not wear a mask and avoid crowds? It’s worked well across the globe but we refuse to do it for some reason even though it has proven to be very effective. I just don’t get it.

science doesn’t actually say that, but you go ahead and keep being wrong (it’s all your type knows how to do).

don’t bring up science when you don’t actually know a thing about it.

        • Dorothy_Mantooth

Science is not an exact science my friend and there are always scientific studies that contradict other studies, whether it has to do with COVID, vaccines, the flu, pain treatments, etc. I’m just looking at facts. How did Korea and many other countries get this virus under control so quickly? They heavily tested, everyone wore masks, they quarantined those who were positive and used contract tracing to have others quarantine as well. As a result, the virus is over 99.5% contained and death rates are down to zero. Same with New Zealand and other successful countries around the world.

If this has proven so successful elsewhere, why don’t we adopt it here? This isn’t a political issue or a personal rights issue, this is a common sense issue. Since we don’t have any drugs or vaccine to fight off this virus, why wouldn’t we follow proven, successful models? Masks, social distancing and quarantining the sick has been proven to work, regardless of what some scientists say about effectiveness of masks or how deadly COVID truly is. The longer this spreads, the longer it’s going to take to our country to get back to normal and getting back to normal should be everyone’s primary goal.

        • bhambrave

There have also been reports that some of the Asian countries are misreporting their data, blaming illnesses that might be Covid-related on something else. I agree that we should be more diligent, more uniform and universal in our protocols, but don’t put blind faith in statistics from other countries. They might be misleading.

        • UGA_Steve

The cloth masks, practically any masks, are not to protect YOU. They are to protect everyone around you by helping to intercept a percentage of particles flowing from your mouth and nose when you breath/talk. Are the 100% effective, absolutely not, but they certainly can still help.

The problem with cloth masks are there are so selfish many people who only think of themselves. You know, the ones that keeping stating cloth masks do nothing.

        • SashaBanksFan

As one of the few Republicans in CA, I agree with you Dorothy. Well said. I even wear a mask whenever I’m outside exercising. I have become accustomed to it. It’s not preferrable but I do it. Wearing a mask can’t make COVID any worse and can only help the situation. If you can’t wear a face mask for health reasons then wear a face shield. One of the most American things we can do is sacrifice for someone else, whether it be for someone we know or someone we don’t.

Wearing a mask actually can be a burden. It’s harder to breathe, and especially in the heat of a Georgia summer it can lead to overheating issues as well.
99.5% recovery rate, and the vast majority of that 0.5% fatality rate is comprised of elderly and health-compromised individuals. If those at risk stayed at home and had no contact with other people, the fatality rate would drop even lower than it already is. Most people get it and have either mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
Not to mention the fact that New York and New Jersey combined account for nearly 1/3rd of the fatalities in the entire country… They obviously got hit pretty hard, but the rest of the country is doing just fine.

I don’t have a heart issue and I do not expect everyone around me to wear a mask. In fact, I expect them to continue to be selfish, as it’s human nature.

Me, I wear a mask to try to prevent even one person from getting something that could be fatal. Am I showing any symptoms or have I tested positive .. nope. Will I ever truly know if I saved someone? Nope. Doesn’t matter. To me, it’s worth it.

I don’t see any changes lol. 3 mayors in a row resigned or jailed for corruption. Only 600,000 people here with over 300 murders a year(only reported). They do nothing to stem the tide of drugs. They have high recidivism because they let criminals back out when it’s their 3rd gun charge. Wonder why ppl are dying? Because a certain party panders and won’t do the right thing.

When they did vote on a tough crime bill in the 90s they paid and are still having to answer for it, when they did the right thing back then.

You turn right around and act oblivious bubbling yourself off isn’t serious too. Because it is.

Agreed Wiffle. Our country’s name has United in it but there’s selfishness from those in the White House whose priority is on November to the young ignorant ones who simply are looking for instant gratification. This country needs to get our act together fast.

I don’t think a single MLB team will play more than 15 regular season games.
I also think we’ll start seeing more and more players opting out for ’20.
We’ve just become too distrusting and selfish to defeat crisis that require relying on a strong centralized response and unified front.

I don’t possibly see how this season is going to work or why so many are insisting that a season must happen at all costs. We can survive one summer without baseball. Heck we’re already almost half way through it. We’ve learned to make do while sacrificing much more important things. For the sake of safety and logic, for the integrity of the game: just cancel the season!

The park by my house was jam packed with non mask wearing protesters.

From the Department of Irony: the same folks protesting the police are now advocating for a state wide mandate to wear masks.

Question. Who will enforce this mandate? Private security? Concerned citizens? The Coast Guard? Spider Man?

          Were there protesters wearing masks?
          Yeah for sure.

I’m in Minneapolis. Where all the protests started. Had a front row seat. At least a third of the people protesting at the park in my neighborhood were not wearing them.
I’m sure you can find news footage.

& yes. “My” governor is trying to issue a mandate for everyone to wear a mask.
& yes. The folks protesting a truly awful event & a really crummy cop are in total support of said mandate.

The virus is running uncontrolled from all activities where social distancing and/or masks are being ignored. Non-n95 masks don’t stop the spread if you’re not social distancing. Everybody that doesn’t do both are contributing to the spread.

It was inevitable that at least one prominent player would test positive and develop symptoms. Let’s hope he recovers fully. I think what a segment of the electorate doesn’t get is that this isn’t a hoax, it can be serious, public health measures, like social distancing and masks, are needed, and over 100K have already been lost. Now, maybe MLB can find a way to minimize risk and play the games to give us the pleasure of watching them. But reality is reality, and we ought to start facing it.

To be fair it can’t be denied that politics is on display when the government and the media give a free pass to protesters (not to mention rioters) concerning the rules and suggestions while turning the screws on just about everyone else. That being said, shelter in place, wear a mask when out and practice social distancing. To not do so is crazy. Common sense shouldn’t need governmental edict but it is what it be.

its funny that 31 guys were known to have tested positive, yet when we hear the names of those 31 it suddenly becomes more jarring to people. relax, its still 1.2%. you can say they should cancel but the players knew the risk when they didnt opt out. they knew there was a good chance they might get it. frankly saying they should cancel ia unreasonable. that choice was for the involved parties – the owners and the players – to make, and they said yes to it.

    Reply

Exactly. We can simultaneously acknowledge the reality of the virus and still chose to live life as we desire. If the players want to play, they can play. Who are you to say they can’t? It’s like I woke up and I’m not in America anymore with some of these comments.

When I go out in public wearing a mask, people look at me funny like I’m a coward or something. They don’t realize that I’m wearing it to protect them, not myself. Masks aren’t very effective at keeping you from contracting it, just from you transmitting it.

If the mask doesn’t protect you, how do they protect others? Are you saying the masks work upon exhale but not upon inhale??

      Reply
      • DarkSide830

its not that they dont protect you, its that they greatly block the outward flow of particles, but some particles that are airborne can get in unless you have a strong filter. unless you intentionally cough very violently the mask will be able to mostly limit the ammount that gets into the air. anything that is in the air is liable to get on the mask and sink in, even if the presence of the layer provides something of a mitigating effect.

You can still get the virus through your eyes, unless you’re wearing a shield or protective goggles. the mask keeps most of the droplets from getting airborne, protecting the people around you.

I was about to make this same comment. Unless you have a mask with a filter, it doesn’t do much to defend you. But it sure does stop you from spreading the virus.

and that’s the tragedy of the situation. the masks thing doesnt work unless everyone does it. you cant just tell people to wear masks if they afraid, because the one without the mask in a room of masked people is arguably safer than the masked person in a room of unmasked people. i for one have bristled at some of the mask laws, like i wolnt wear a mask when im walking alone around the neighbourhood, but indoors or in highly trafficked outdoors areas i always do, and i dont see any reason not to unless you have a respritory issue that prevents you from being able to.

This is bad news, especially if Freeman got it in Braves camp. For a second there I STARTED to think the Braves were going to get off easy and then I saw this as I’m heading to work.

Losing Freeman is bad enough. If the Braves lose Smith also than that resets the Braves bullpen BACK to the same group that blew two late leads in the playoffs against the Cardinals.

Freeman alone might costs the Braves a playoff spot.

This could have a larger impact though. We’re starting to see a lot of players test positive and we’re starting to see some big names drop now. What does this mean to players like Trout who already stated they don’t feel safe playing and learns players are getting sick in camp?
