Major League Baseball has issued suspensions in the wake of last night’s bench-clearing action between the Dodgers and Astros. Los Angeles righty Joe Kelly was suspended for eight games and manager Dave Roberts received a single-game ban.
Kelly will appeal his suspension, so it’s not going into effect right away. Roberts will go ahead and sit out this evening’s game. His counterpart, Astros skipper Dusty Baker, will be fined for what went down between the two clubs.
In Kelly’s case, the league made several factual determinations that drove the decision. Kelly was deemed to have thrown “in the area of the head” and also to have “taunted” in a manner that spurred the clearing of the benches. The statement also noted that he had previously been suspended for such an incident.
wild bill tetley
Ball slipped out of his hand. Should just be a fine in masked kangaroo kourt.
texasfury93
Slipped out of his hand twice in a 1 inning appearance and stepped in MIchael Brantley’s running lane? Nah, I don’t believe those were accidents. Good to see MLB enact some discipline.
BaseballPurist1
Brantley should be suspended for spiking Kelly. Gurriel and Correa should be suspended for coming charging .
beisbolista
Imagine suspending Joe Kelly for misbehaving during one game but not suspending a single Astros player for conspiring across seasons to defraud the entire league, to steal awards and titles, and to undermine confidence in the results on the field. The absurdity and hypocrisy are so thick in the air that they can be sliced with a butter knife. The Astros players involved should be BANNED FROM BASEBALL, not defended by the commissioner against swear words and inside pitches.
logan26
This couldn’t have been said any better. There has to be a way for baseball to rid the sport of the worst commissioner of any sport. He is ruining baseball. To defend the cheaters that he gave a slap on the wrist. The severity of Kelly’s suspension in a shortened season is absurd. I can’t stand the Trashtros and I can’t stand the commissioner.
Enrico Pallazzo
Yes!! Well said!
cptstupendous
Agreed! It might be time to just give up on MLB and Manfred as they’ve given up on the game.

The Astros SHOULD NOT be banned from baseball. Do you know why? BECAUSE THAT’S BAD BUSINESS. It would lead to loss of profits. You can send a message without throwing behind them.

What a load of bull spit, not a single Astros player takes a suspension but this dude does for missing Astros hitters, throw at the Astros heads please mlb pitchers, they cheated us all including their own fans
BlueSkies_LA
The only way to get rid of the commissioner is if he isn’t doing the bidding of ownership because that’s who hires him. When the commissioner speaks ownership’s voice comes out of his mouth. Still think the problem is the commissioner?

Every major contender was cheating in 2017. It will eventually all come out.

Right on bro ! Enough favoring of Astros this sissy stuff. They need to bean every one and throw behind a few like Kelly did

I agree rob manfred has to go
jasaka
Kelly shouldn’t have had his foot in front of the bag. I don’t know if Kelly put it there on purpose, but Brantley most likely stepped on Kelly’s foot on purpose. In replay you can see Brantley looking down well in advance of the bag, with enough time to avoid Kelly’s foot. From the back angel you can see Brantley shuffling his stride a little on the last step which looks like he did it to make sure he got Kelly’s foot. Then Brantley gave a nice stare down afterward
I guess we will never know.
atomicfront
I think we can all agree that Manfred is the worst. Why did he get rid of the DH this year? Why not suspend the Marlin’s players who went out and got the virus.

Yeah, he put his foot there so he could be spiked. Did you ever play baseball? Spiked? Geez what a dumb comment most people would say. I guess we will never know.
brandon1986
Kelly should learn how to put his foot on a bag. And you should learn some baseball with a comment like that
StlSwifty
You know what else is bad for business? Bad business ethics. the Astros literally ended some guys careers with the way they cheated. They knew what pitch was coming like 80% of the time and lit guys up so bad they lost their job and career. So what you’re saying is it’s ok for a whole team to cheat to such an extent that they put others out of a job and they should be able to keep theirs without even a slap on the wrist? Get real. Cheaters SHOULD be banned and they WON’T be because Manfred is a corrupt D@UCHE.
goastros123
What I’m saying is be realistic. Banning a whole team leads to a guaranteed loss of profits and that’s why they weren’ banned. MLB doesn’t want to lose money and that’s exactly what would’ve happened. Bad business ethnics is not a guaranteed loss of profits like banning a whole team is.
abcrazy4dodgers
They should revert the former Enron field back to it’s original name.

Yea “enact some discipline” lol. How about suspending the players from 2017. Let’s start with that discipline haha.
DarkSide830
remember when Brantley was on the Astros in 2017? oh wait…he wasnt.
shibbynotdude
Remember when Joe Kelly was on the Dodgers in 2017, oh yeah he wasn’t.
logan26
Remember when he was on the 2017 Red Sox who also got cheated in their post season series against the Astros. The Dodgers weren’t the only ones who were effected by the cheaters.
goastros123
Red Sox cheated in 2018 and Joe Kelly was on that team. People tend to forget that.
DirtbagBlues
I don’t get the “Joe Kelly wasn’t even in the 2017 World Series!” argument. Players from around the league are furious with the Astros. This isn’t limited to the Dodgers.
tbdavidh
Joe Kelly was on the Red Sox in 2017 that got caught cheating during the 2017 season.

“How about giving our WS back”
Do you have any idea how childish that sounds during a pandemic? Get a clue
DarkSide830
that’s not how it works
KCJ
Yaketymac –
You do realize that not EVERYTHING has to be tied to the pandemic, right? It is OK for people to have feelings and opinions on other things. Now go back to your foxhole….we’ll let you know when its safe to come out
McGurk
What does a pandemic have to do with it. Cheating is cheating. They stole something. Fans and players are going to make sure they never live it down. Especially if they are going to show no remorse.
BigGiantHead
Be fair now. Kelly has no idea where the ball is going. Remember he posted a video of him throwing at home, and breaking one of his own windows.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Damn.
It appears I now have two things in common with Joe Kelly.
jasaka
He was planning this since then. That video was planted as a deep cover to support the argument that he has no idea where his pitches are going, hehe. ; )

He walked 2 and went 3-2 to Correa
He missed multiple times with the fastball in the exact same height just over the plate. He clearly had no release point
Whiners whine
Astros started the talking and had 3 comments at least before Kelly said anything. Get over yourself
Kayrall
It’s impressive how many times now MLB has gotten events regarding the Astros wrong. They should be turning a blind eye for every game in 2020.
gtb1
How do you feel about the cheating Yankees and Red Sox? Not sure why the Astros are getting all of the anger. Every major contending team was cheating in 2017. They all had full access to live feeds and were expected not to use it?
McGurk
Astros systematically cheated in real time. A nerd in the video room told them what was coming. The Sox used video equipment to decode signs but didn’t relay them to the current batter. The Sox scheme required a player to be on second base to actually read the signs. The Yankees to my knowledge haven’t been caught cheating with use of technology since all teams were warned.
jjd002
Lol. You believe everything you just wrote?
CrookedAsstros
@gtb1 If this is true than answer me this: if the Yankees were stealing signs in real-time, then why would guys like Judge, Sanchez and Stanton strike out so much? How could they get so fooled by a breaking ball if they knew it was coming? Or maybe you’re just making things up based on your own bias.
12isbetter
Gtb1. It’s media portrayal like these guys always believe! It’s a sad life.
gtb1
McCullers closed out the Yankees with 24 straight curveballs. 24 straight. Maybe even if you know what’s coming, good curveballs are hard to hit. Sluggers have always notoriously been high strike out guys. I can tell you are attempting to be serious. Why did the Yankees get fined by MLB in 2018? Why did they sue to block release of “the letter” that would cause “severe reputational injury”? They must have been late for choir practice. Get real. All the clubs had access to live feeds. All the contenders were using it in one form or another. When Beltran came to Houston from the Yankees he told the team they were way behind the Yankees. It was widespread. No one went to LA without changing all their signals. Baseball has very transient loyalty these days. It will all come out eventually.
12isbetter
Kayrall, what a dumb…….
fw-
When I found out about this little scandal I felt literally nothing and still couldn’t care less about what happened. I feel like it would be the same even if my team was affected by it. It’s just funny to sit back and watch how people suddenly care about the morality of the game.
Al Hirschen
If it was against the Marlins , he would have gotten less games
TJECK109
So 8 games out of a 60 game schedule? Are you saying this would be worth a 20 game suspension if it were a regular full schedule? Bogus and ridiculous
KCJ
Yeah 8 games is absolutely ridiculous, particularly when he didn’t even actually hit anyone. Kelly was expressing what all the rest of us are feeling, and I doubt any of the this would have happened if MLB had shown some (any) competence in dealing with the situation
12isbetter
Tjeck and others – what do you think would happen if mlb did nothing and the next time it connected leaving someone permanently injured? You people don’t use your brains!
Redwood13
All teams were told “no retaliation “ on Astros, this is the one example to the other teams not to do this or this will be the punishment you will receive in a short season.
User 4245925809
Admit didn’t see the incident, but can say never saw him throw at a hitter can remember in his Sox days. In fact.. He was 1 of the so called “comedy acts” who got along with everyone.
He’d get emotional on the mound sometimes however after a big k, but throwing at someone? Maybe pressure to fulfill his contract or something?
Redwood13
Kelly was caught doing this before, that’s why the longer punishment this time. Track record on people that throw at other people putting their lives in danger. You may not be old enough to remember Dickey Thon a very very good young short stop was hit in the head and was never the same had double vision for years and it cost him many millions of dollars in future contracts.

What about suspending Correa or Gurriel or others who came to have a fight. . What a weak double standard the commissioner is. He did not enough to send a message to the Astros before who are clearly cheaters and cheated that year and on the World Series.
DodgerNation
I would officially like to start the movement of Manfred needs to be fired! He clearly has no idea what he is doing anymore and I’m sick of it! It seems like every decision he makes these days is terrible can we please have a commissioner who grows a pair and does the right thing for once!?!?

Good point, tho I would want to fight too if someone cost me millions and my career. The double standard still applies.

I would want to beat the hell out of someone who stole my WS trophy by cheating. Instead, I might just throw a baseball at them. You don’t get to complain about punishment when you cheat.
Redwood13
Kelly was caught doing this before, that’s why the longer punishment this time. Track record on people that throw at other people putting their lives in danger. Ultimately it sounds like the question becomes is the means worth the ends. If the means costs other people than it is very easy to question the ends.

Manfred protects hitters and hates pitchers. That is what motivates his rule changes.

Dodgers Best team in baseball 2017. Defeated By Cheaters Astros.
LaBalaDePlata
Game 2 and Game 7. Enough said.
JustCheckingIn
It’s confirmed they cheated on the road. Sit down and suck your thumb, child
LaBalaDePlata
Confirmed? In Dodger Stadium? They caused Yu to throw the ball all over the infield? Caused Kenley to give up a home run to Marwin? Caused Bellinger to hit .143 with 17 K’s?
Lots of crying from the Dodger camp, when looking in their own mirror would serve them well.
lowtalker1
Kelly won’t win that one.
yaketymac
He should’ve gotten 10 games.
Throwing at heads ends careers
andrewgauldin
I’m not saying what Kelly did wasn’t wrong, but Correa, Bregman, and many of the 2017 Astros ruined many careers that year.
Nobody should throw at anybody’s head, but I’d like to see more teams throw at the shins or knees of the Astros.
yaketymac
Oh, okay. So where does it end? Will hitting 5 Astros batters make you happy? Or just hit them all every game?
What are you, 8 years old? At what point do you just play ball and compete instead wanting batters endangered?
jjd002
Who had their careers ruined? One game, or even a few games against one team isn’t going to make or break a career. There are 28 other teams in the league you play against.
yaketymac
“Who had their careers ruined?”
I’m serious: when does it end? How many Astros need to get hit to satisfy you? Should every team hit them? What happens when one gets hit in the head, which your idol Kelly nearly did to Bregman last night?
Just hit batters all year right? Do you have any idea how idiotic that sounds?
jjd002
I wonder if these people want Astros on other teams hit too. Does someone need to hit Marisnick or Marwin for their parts, even though they are on different teams?
yaketymac
They want them all hit in the head, and every game.
Meanwhile they would all be in jail if they acted like that in real life.
DirtbagBlues
I think the Astros’ lack of remorse is what is really instigating a lot of this. Not that players wouldn’t be mad regardless but the fact that the Astros keep doubling down and acting victimized is just going to draw more ire. This won’t end because the Astros refuse to acknowledge they did anything exceptionally wrong.
Knuckleball Lady
Exactly
Javia
Sure, just get over it. Easy to say from the sidelines. I am sure that if we worked together and I took credit for your work, got your promotion and your raise, you would just let it go wouldn’t you? Don’t even bother trying to say yes you would because everyone here would see it as the obvious lie that it would be.
Steve_SD
@yaketymac For the record, no Astros batter was hit. And nothing and no one will ever convince me that Kelly was throwing AT anyone last night. His SOLE intent was to put the Fear of Joe Kelly into the Astros batters, and he did that.
McGurk
It ends when Asterisks man up and show some remorse. They stole a WS. sure they ratted out their GM and manager, but since when do criminals get to keep what they stole?
I don’t think anyone wants to purposely injure or end anyone’s career. They do however want them to wear it, and feel like they can get hit any time, they should not feel safe in the box all season or next imo. It should always be in the back of their minds.
wild bill tetley
Where does it end?
It ends with Kelly hitting the bases loaded and coughing up more runs for putting guys on-base. Batters endangered…they wear hundreds of dollars worth of padding. They are no longer endangered. They are empowered and brazen enough to stand nearly on-top of the plate.
VonPurpleHayes
That was the problem wuth the league’s weak punishment. Now, no one will be happy until it’s forgotten. Has players gotten suspended or the title removed in some fashion, fans and players wouldn’t be demanding vigilante justice.

mlbdodgerfan2015
I doubt he was throwing at their heads. Have you seen his fastball command these days? It’s non-existent. He threw almost all breaking pitches against SF. And yesterday it was mostly offspeed and he had no control on the fastball. I suspect that this is maybe the reason why he mysteriously disappeared from intrasquad games? Was he trying to hit Bregman? Probably. In the head? Doubt it. Probably wanted to drill him in the back and ball sailed. The other pitches were all offspeed pitches that got away.
jjd002
The one against Bregman was 100% on purpose. The rest were breaking pitches, with terrible command.
KCJ
Yakety –
Shouldn’t you be more concerned with the pandemic? (see above)
jagonza
How many careers were ending because of their cheating ?
jjd002
Who had a career ruined because of one team?
McGurk
Clayton Kershaw’s legacy was certainly ruined by the cheaters. 21 Clayton Kershaw Curve’s and not a single strike. The rest of the series 11 innings of sub 2 era.
jjd002
His playoff legacy wasn’t ruined by one outing.
Vladguerrerojr20
The Astros actually ended atleast one career with their sign stealing. I believe it was Mike Bolsinger got lit up by the Astros, it was already proven they cheated in that game and you could clearly hear a trash can being banged on upon seeing replays. He ended up going to the DL after that appearance and never appeared again in the majors.
jjd002
Seems like there were many other issues than one game. One game is not going to make or break a career. No matter how much someone wants to think that.
cencal
So does hitting balls like its BP off lower tier pitchers because you cheat and know what it coming.
Absolutely zero sympathy for any Astros players in any way.

Francys01
Eight games is way too much to be suspended when the season is only 60 games. The Astros still have their championship when the whole world knows that they cheated. Crazy, right?
wagner13
Yeah, this seems excessive. I think they either should’ve cut the suspension in half or given Correa a light suspension for encouraging the brawl. That way, Kelly still misses a couple of potential appearances but his absence isn’t quite so impactful. I don’t want to get into a major argument, but there’s technically no evidence his pitches were intentional. However, he did induce the dispute and broke social distancing guidelines. If both sides are punished, teams will understand this sort of childish behavior is unacceptable in the future
FSogol
The 8 days is a warning to all the other teams that want to throw at the Cheatros.
puhl
Yes it is. Better think twice.
Having said that, this should be the standing rule ANYTIME a batter has a ball thrown at his head.
DarkSide830
agreed. suspensions need to be increased for this sort of thing. Kelly got 8 for throwing three pitches aggressively and actimg immaturely. frankly that might be too light.
DirtbagBlues
“Acting immaturely” good lord, get over it. If that’s all it takes to get suspended Madison Bumgardner would perpetually serving a suspension.
JustCheckingIn
He didn’t say a damn word till Houston said at least 3 things and were in the field. Talk about ignoring facts. Man dude…
Astros2333
He said ‘Nice Swing Bitch’ to Correa after he struck out.
BlueSkies_LA
And all opposing pitchers risk suspension if they throw inside. That’ll serve those cheating Astros right!
Tyson’s Pet Tiger
Manfred again showing how much he approves of the Astros cheating. Guy has done nothing but wink and nod every chance he can. You give Kelly an eight game suspension for ‘throwing around the head’. You know who else got an eight game suspension? Rougned Odor. And he didn’t throw anything ‘around the head’. Just his fist directly into Bautista’s face. Unreal.
Vladguerrerojr20
Manfred is a gypsy witch doctor.
jwardrip99
How many Astros were suspended for cheating?!
parkers
Kelly takes a chance on permanently injuring Bregman and Correa. The penalty for the crime of cheating is to face a brave never was cast off pitcher, standing 60 feet a way aiming at your head. After all they cheated that deserves a death sentence. Joe Kelly is so brave and our hero, he is not good for anything else.
mlbdodgerfan2015
Pitch to Correa was an offspeed pitch. You don’t throw that if you want to hit someone.

echozulu88
Everyone that wouldn’t have been immediately overturned in a court. In a fair world a lot of the players should have been suspended. Labor union laws and the CBA prevented that in this case. MLB either wastes time and resources or issues the immunity to find out the true scope of it all.
LaBalaDePlata
Immunity
sherlock_
And the Astros have been suspended 0 games for cheating and violating social distancing. Seems fair. (Eyeroll)
LaBalaDePlata
Guess we forget what immunity means.
JustCheckingIn
Doesn’t mean it’s justified lmfao. But keep defending the biggest cheaters in the last hundred years. Good thing to teach your kids. Cheat to win? No punishments!!
Pathetic
LaBalaDePlata
Everybody cheats a little bit, so yes, many cheat to win. I’m sure you cheated in school on something, and I doubt you’d teach your kids to do the same.
And you can complain about suspensions all day, but the whole reason to grant immunity is to get the information. You wouldn’t know much of anything about this scandal if immunity hadn’t been given in the first place.
But stay salty, my friend.
VonPurpleHayes
Correra needs a suspension as well. He’s the one who stepped up to fight. Astros cheated and got a ring. You need thicker skin.
DarkSide830
Kelly is the one whose skin isnt thick enough

glad you are so angry at the Astros that you cant even tolerate anyone who disagrees with how they are dealt with. but hey, ill stop commenting. anything for you random dude who disagrees with me.
VonPurpleHayes
I don’t disagree with Kelly’s suspension at all. He threw towards a player’s head. I think Correa deserves one too is all. Astros should have been prepared for this.
puhl
They are, which is why Bregman didn’t say a word and went to first base. The rest of the league should have been prepared for this kind of discipline. League told them in spring training not to do this.
DirtbagBlues
I’m not a big fan of Bregman but he handled the situation perfectly. Much better than Correa did.
VonPurpleHayes
Yea. Bregman did the right thing. Correa did not. That’s why Correa deserves a suspe

He was having control issues all inning.
but…but…he stuck his tongue out… 8 games (roughly 20 games in an actual season.)
cheating…meh
should’ve offered him immunity for his testimony.
jjd002
The one at Bregman wasn’t a control issue. That was 100% on purpose. The rest was his terrible command last night. Yuli and Correa got inside pitches because he was wild last night.
stan lee the manly
The players need to refuse to play for as long as Kelly is suspended and send a message to ol Manfred. Force him to take his head out of his butt and do something
DarkSide830

stan lee the manly
What’s with the personal vendetta against Kelly?
JustCheckingIn
Your hatred for Kelly to the point of defending Houston is a hilariously awful look for you
LaBalaDePlata
Such a cry-baby. Get over it.
jjd002
Why? Kelly was on a team that was cheating and there were more than just the Astros and Red Sox cheating.
echozulu88
And miss out on their pay and service time consequences and such? Yeah that’s not going to happen.
stan lee the manly
Well ya, the players proved they were just as much all about the money as the owners during “negotiations” to start the season, so I agree that they won’t. But they could make a powerful statement that would be a lot more effective than continuing to bean the Astros, as entertaining as that will no doubt be.
skrockij89
Astros should’ve been suspended this whole year.
cecildawg
Yackymac – Quiet yourself.
throwinched10
The fastball behind Bregman was intentional. The offspeed pitch behind Correa was NOT. Anyone who believes that Joe Kelly tried to send a message to Correa with an offspeed pitch has no clue! Either way, the Astros have it coming. Joe – take your suspension and keep your head up. Correa – keep your mouth shut and stay on your toes.
jjd002
Bingo. If he hit Bregman in the ribs he probably doesn’t get suspended.
stan lee the manly
Nah, he still gets suspended, but it’s probably reduced. Manfred already came out and said that any retaliation against the Astros will be instant suspension.
JustCheckingIn
If Bergman spins, it hits his waist and no one gives a damn
They intentionally dived into a fetal position to say it for their heads. Yawn
LaBalaDePlata
Did you even see the replay? It is behind his head, not his waist. Are you so distorted that your eyes are lying to you now???
oaklandfan22
Why not suspend the Astros the whole season then?
yaketymac
Yeah, I get it. The Astros cheated. We get it. Hit Bregman in the back and move on.
Kelly making ridiculous faces and making it all about him (as usual) isn’t really settling a score. It’s bush league
andrewgauldin
So Kelly making ridiculous faces and your assumption that “making it about him,” (which is a ridiculous claim), is the last straw to you? What the Astros did is beyond bush league. The MLB did not punish the players, so I expect other teams to punish the Astros. Although I do not agree with throwing near the head, I expect this to continue.
yaketymac
Again, still waiting for Joe Kelly’s idiot fan club here to tell us how many Astros should get hit for this to equal justice.
Let’s hear the number. I’ll keep waiting, fanboys
cecildawg
yackymac- Forever. Suspended for ever.
puhl
EXACTLY! And I’m fine with plunking Bregman is you want, but at the head is a no go. And once or twice in enough.
mcmillankmm
yaket – you really have it out for Kelly don’t you? How did he make it about him? Seems to me like Correa kept it all going as much as Kelly did
yaketymac
How did he make it about him?
Let’s see: throwing at Bergman’s head instead lower where a non-meathead professional pitcher would’ve hit him.
Making idiotic faces because he wanted to win Twitter for the day, acting like they weren’t purpose pitches, then taunting the other team.
There was no doubt whatsoever he would be suspended today. The fanboys here acting like this is some grave injustice are ridiculous. Kelly got what he deserved.
Now I want the Astros lynch mob here to tell me how many Astros need to get hit for justice to be served. While you’re at it, tell me how many Yankees and Red Sox should be hit too. Give me the names of the batters you want hit and how many beanballs will satisfy you.
DirtbagBlues
The Bregman pitch looked like it was going to hit him in the shoulders. The fact that Bregman ducked is what made it such a close call.
But regardless, it warrants a suspension.
KCJ
Yeah Yakety first says that we shouldn’t be concerning ourselves with such things during a pandemic, then spends the next hour or so complaining about the same exact topic. Kelly must’ve kicked his dog or something
BleedzBlue
As a Dodgers fan, I actually agree with you that JK should be suspended. 8 games is ridiculous and should (will be) appealed. To answer the even more ridiculous question you keep asking… how about 10. Let’s hit 10 of their guys and see how we feel after. I have a few favorites but any 10 will do. In fairness, it can be the same guys multiple times. Does that satisfy your curiosity?
DirtbagBlues
I get punishing Kelly for throwing at hitters. But a suspension for “making faces” is absurd. Grow some thicker skin.
yaketymac
It’s called taunting the opposing team, and it says a lot more about Kelly and you than anything else.
DirtbagBlues
Again, grow some thicker skin. Players jaw at each other all the time and don’t get suspended. This is nitpicking.
yaketymac
Kelly’s taunting was literally referenced in his suspension, moron. Tell Manfred to grow thicker skin, tough guy.
DirtbagBlues
That’s exactly what I’m saying, it’s absurd that MLB would suspend him for such a thing. I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen Madison Bumgardner yelling at batters and baserunners. How is “making a face” any worse?
And the fact that you seem to be agreeing with it means the thicker skin comment still applies to you. But thanks for starting with the name calling just because I disagreed with you. You’re right, you don’t need thicker skin.

Taunting the opposing team??? Lol . The Asterisks are living breathing walking taunt to the whole league. They ruined a whole season of baseball and have the nerve to expect everyone to move on.

I personally found it hilarious and think that the Astros should get ready to see stuff like this over the remaining 54 or so games.

“Kelly never hit anyone”
Did you just start watching baseball games yesterday? He threw a fastball behind Bergman’s head.
So how many Astros players need to take fastballs in the head for you to be happy? When does it end?
fred-3
You can’t suspend a pitcher this long for almost hitting someone. That sets up a dangerous precedent. Again, no one got hit.
mcmillankmm
You’re a clown

No amount is enough. The Astros need to be hit in the head until all the cheaters retire. Or until Manfred suspends them for cheating and takes their title away.

fred-3
He never hit anyone. It’s just like how you can’t arrest someone for almost committing a crime.
mlbdodgerfan2015
It looked worse than it really was. He threw one fastball to the Giants out of 17 pitches. I don’t think he threw a fastball strike to the Astros and only threw a handful, mostly breaking pitches. Why do you think that is? He’s really struggling with the fastball. Not quite the yips but I’m sure the Dodgers are concerned. He was a one pitch pitcher against Correa and yet Correa struck out. Do I think he tried to hit Bregman? Probably. 3-0 pitch. But I doubt he was trying to hit him in the head.
Wyoming Bison Expansion Team
You have no idea how things actually work do you?
There’s a reason attempted murder is a crime.
There’s also a reason get away drivers are charged with a crime as an accomplice even though they didn’t actually commit the crime.
Guys are charged and convicted all the time as accomplices or attempting to commit a crime but actually don’t.
Jeff Todd
Actually there are many “attempt” crimes where the actual crime is not completed or successfully executed.
fred-3
In this case Kelly was charged with murder. 8 games in a 60 game season is not an attempt offense.

Do guys get charged for grand theft?

DarkSide830
no, but i do know a thing about being being professional and i can tell you Kelly wasnt doing that.
yaketymac
Every single person championing Kelly here is saying the same thing: Astros deserved it, who cares.
But when does it end? Why should Kelly not be punished for throwing at a batter’s head? It’ll just happen again if they don’t punish him.
A fastball in the head can kill a batter.
DirtbagBlues
The irony is Manfred effectively created this mess. The players would’ve been angry no matter what but Manfred’s inaction is what spurred players to take things into their own hands.
yaketymac
Sure I don’t disagree. Manfred deserves a lot of blame for this. But he didn’t throw at someone’s head
Woods Rider
Not literally, but he absolutely did figuratively speaking. His lack of actions speak volumes.
HalosHeavenJJ
Bregman’s was at the shoulder and Correa’s was a breaking ball. Maybe the hysteric’s of “he threw at his head” can be calmed down a bit.
But you also said that Marisnick tried to avoid contact with Lucroy last year, which clearly was not the case, and that Noe tried to murder him.
so maybe hysterics are your thing.

mcmillankmm
Who did you hear from?
VonPurpleHayes
While I wouldn’t stand up for Kelly here, Correa was chirping the whole time. Kelly threw towards the head. His suspension is justified. Correa deserves some suspension time as well. 1 game would have been fine. Ridiculous double standard.
nats3256
Dang. 8 games this year is like a 21 game suspension during a normal year.
jjd002
My guess is because of the multiple meetings since January addressing this very situation. Hit Bregman in the ribs and maybe get a game, but probably just a fine.
DirtbagBlues
Nah, hitting someone intentionally is pretty much always an automatic suspension. The whole “just don’t aim for the head” argument is splitting hairs. Once you’re aiming for the guy’s back it you don’t need to be off by much to get dangerously close to the head and neck.

And if Bergman spins, it hits his ribs…

The Astros feel entitled because Manfred gave them immunity. They are a bunch of children who have been taught the wrong way to play baseball. He’s teaching them a lesson about the harsh reality that is MLB, not whatever game they have been playing under soy boy Hinch and Luhnow. I stand by my statement. Thank you, Joe.
DarkSide830

This is Manfred’s fault. If they had been given the punishment they were worthy of, we wouldn’t be in this situation. It’s up to the players now to make it right.

“The Astros feel entitled”

Kelly could hit 5 more Astros and you’d still be here cheering him on to hit more. It says a lot about what a clown you are.

gtb1
Venom, just google reputational injury. Yankees. Easy to verify Yankees were fined during MLB investigation of RedSox in 2018. Beltran brought a more sophisticated level of cheating from Yankees to the Astros. It was prevalent throughout the league. Sign stealing has been around since the beginning of baseball. Many – including me – believe using tech to cheat is going too far but the ethics is the same whether it’s a runner on second relaying signals or beating on a trashcan while watching live feeds. MLB created this problem allowing access to live feeds during a game. 8 second time delay would have prevented this entire mess.
logan26
You are a moron if you think that it was a strong and correct message. MLB should have taken the strong and correct message when handing out their punishment to the Astros for cheating themselves to a World Series and stealing an MVP award. That is where the strong and correct punishment should have been added. Yet they got a slap on the wrist and immunity and protection by a moron commissioner. The commissioner is a little late. But lets suspend Kelly for over 10% of the season because we have to protect the special cheaters.

Manfred is a disgrace to baseball. Protecting the Astros no matter the cost to other teams. No one was hit and Kelley is a wild pitcher. He lucked out that inning despite his lack of control. Clearly he didn’t intend to hit Correa, his two back to back off location pitches showed as such. Manfred needs to be removed and replaced especially his choices to continually kill the game. Obviously he doesn’t know deadly squat about the game.

So, given what happened, what outcome would you have rather had? Astros’ players aren’t given immunity and don’t tell the truth. As a result there is no evidence, no proof and nothing is done by MLB. Or, Astros players are given immunity, tell the truth so we all know what went on. Sounds like all of y’all would have preferred to bury your head in the sand. It happened, MLB got the proof the only way they could by giving immunity. It is time for folks to move on.
ScottCFA
No, Puhl, as in Terry Puhl? MLB can’t touch the Cheatstros, but fans and other players still know what they did and should never forget. Only Astro fans think “it is time to move on.”
puhl
I guess fans can do what they want for as long as the want. Players can’t however. Throwing at someone’s head is a non-starter. Period end of discussion. MLB sent the warning in spring training. The Dodgers and Kelly ignored that just as much as the Astros ignored the warning from the league office about sign stealing. Both got dealt with. Fans can boo, whine and moan all they want. Players need to play.
BigGiantHead
I’ve seen the videos and heard the trash cans. There is a ton of proof. They cheated to win a world series. They deserve to be plunked (just not on the head).

If you want to suspend Kelly to make a point, fine. But I don’t understand the logic in suspending Dave Roberts and not suspending Dusty Baker? If Roberts is being held accountable for his pitcher (Kelly), then shouldn’t Bake be held responsible for his players? Someone clearly had some extra commentary from the Astros dugout after the Brantley play. Whether that was Baker or someone else who said it, it definitely didn’t help the whole situation.
Mishap
Manfred could have made this all stop by voiding the 2017 championship. The garbage slap on the wrist and zero player penalties is a gutless move. Additionally, the Astros’ players lack of remorse and their arrogant, classless responses to a brazen and unforgivable scandal adds a lot of fuel to the fire. Not saying Kelly should have done what he did…but…the books aren’t balanced on the Astros yet and may never be, and if Manfred won’t punish them, what’s the appropriate justice?
Sign all the Cubans
As a baseball fan, I get why the league did this and it goes beyond the retaliation aspect of the story. I think they realize it’s bad optics to have 60 baseball players on the field in close proximity, with the potential of fighting to occur, in the middle of a pandemic that his killed nearly 150,000 people in this country. They had to discourage anyone else from even thinking about starting an on-field fracas.
As a Dodgers fan, I think this is crap. Sure, there was intent in the 3-0 pitch to Bregman, and I’m glad he did it. Just wish he would have drilled him in the ribs or legs. Sucks that they threw the book at Joe Kelly on this, but a message had to be sent since the league failed to adequately discipline the Astros.

How a suspension for the player who dropped the “F” bomb from Astro’s dugout which was so clear even the announcer commented about the potty mouth ? Didn’t the 570+ rule book say something about bench clearing brawls ? Where were the masks ? Social distancing ? If MLB, the Astros, or Houston fans think “enough is enough” now, just wait until Dodger fans are back in the stands and the Astros come to play at Dodger Stadium, or even in Angel Stadium,. The Asterisks will really be crying and pouting then as the boos rain down on them during every at-bat. It will stay this way for years until they vacate that title. If the Asterisks were mature men, they would just shut up and take their relatively slight punishment from fans and also stop crying at brushback pitches or being held on first. Because, in reality, Altuve, Bregman, Springer, Verlander, all of them, they should have all be banned from MLB! Yes, even the pitchers! Dusty Baker should also eff off! There should be no MLB champion of 2017. There might have been had there been no cheating, but we will never know.

Okay, just hear me out on this one, and I will own my Dodger bias up front. It is BS that Kelly tossed a ball near two heads, and made a silly face, and got suspended, while the cheaters got a light touch on the wrist. I have an idea. Since the 2017 Astros season is tainted, and so is that short wee man cheater’s MVP award, and the post season, and the World Series, I have a great idea. We all know the Astros 2017 season is tainted, therefore, to resolve the issues, let the cheaters keep their tainted trophy, and MVP awards. I say, after every game that anyone plays that was at anytime on the Astros 2017 roster, that (or those) players must report to the pitching mound. Every active player that is still playing, that also played in the 2017 season against said Astros rostered players, shall take their sweaty. post game t’aint, and rub it all over the cheater. The 2017 Astros have been tainted, now, let every player that played against them rub their t’aint against the cheaters.

He got off easy with only 8 games. MLB has made it overtly clear that fighting will be not allowed in 2020 with massive suspensions being issued to anyone who fights. So inciting a fight which Kelly certainly did through numerous actions (verbal taunting, visual taunting and throwing several pitches at players heads) must be punished in equally harsh manner. Add to the fact that the gutless pitcher who knows they cannot come out to fight nor throw at him since NL now has DH is so cavalier knowing he’s completely safe, well, it doesn’t get more pathetic than that. He could easily have ended Bregman’s career with that shockingly dangerous act.
Only people who like Joe Kelly are Nationals fans who I think encouraged their team to vote him a full playoff share for the meatball he threw Howie Kendrick last October…
mlbdodgerfan2015
@ trigato Did you watch the game? Have you seen him pitch his last few outings? The guy has ZERO fastball command right now. To the point that he rarely throws the fastball even though it goes up to 100 mph. It’s hard to determine intent but easier when he’s struggling so much with command. I’ve seen guys like Pedro Martinez with pinpoint control the whole game all of a sudden drill some guys. That is evident that he’s throwing at someone. The only pitch that was intentional was Bregman’s 3-0 pitch and I doubt he tried to throw it at his head. With his fastball command right now I don’t know how anyone can say with confidence that he was trying to throw it at his head. I do think that he was either try to throw it behind him or maybe somewhere in the back but it sailed on him.
mlbdodgerfan2015
As a Dodger fan I don’t mind the suspension too much as Joe Kelly should not be in a ball game unless it is a really low leverage situation. At this point, you cannot count him as he is a one pitch pitcher. Without that 96-100 mph fastball he is not as effective. Seems like it’s a mental thing and he’s scared to throw the fastball. He needs to iron this out before Roberts puts him in closer games. I was surprised that they didn’t yank him out before facing Correa.
Gwynning
MLB needs to address and fix this debacle. Today. They opened a can of worms by giving immunity to the Astros. How could they not see that the players would now be forced to police the issue? This might be the final nail in Manfred’s coffin. Such a sorely mismanaged incident that falls squarely into his lap. Kelly didn’t even hit anyone… and the Astros clearly deserve suspensions as well… just a farcical take to only suspend Kelly and Roberts… and 8 games for Kelly? 14% of the season… for not even hitting anyone? C’mon, man! What a joke protecting the cheats has become.

Everyone that came off the bench should be fined, at a minimum. It’s time for baseball to end this garbage. Any other sport, you leave the bench, it’s an automatic suspension. That would stop this, as a brawl would result in a forfeit if you can’t field a team.

People are choosing to abandon common sense. Joe Kelly threw behind Bregman. It’s one thing to throw at a guy’s back and it’s another thing to throw at a guy’s head INTENTIONALLY. That’s dangerous territory. You’re not trying to injure people. Granted, Bregman wasn”t hit but the whole point of why that territory is dangerous in the first place is because of what could happen. Does any one here know why the spitball was made illegal? A player was hit by one and died because of complications of being hit. Where was he hit? Above the shoulders and to be more specific, he was hit in the head. You can send a message without entering that territory. Many people condemn Astros fans for choosing to stand with our team because we supposedly lack morals but will turn around and advocate for intentionally putting Astros players at risk for being seriously injured, which is just as immoral as they perceive us to be.
mlbdodgerfan2015
Problem is you don’ t know his intent. Kelly has been extremely wild, especially with the fastball. I think the reason why he was held out of Dodger intrasquad games. It’s one thing if the guy had pinpoint control and threw one at the head. I doubt he was trying to hit Bregman in the head.
goastros123
You might be right, but given how the at-bat with Correa and the aftermath went I’m certain it was intentional.
goastros123
