Royals’ Salvador Perez Tests Positive For COVID-19

By TC Zencka | July 4, 2020 at 12:26pm CDT

Royals fans will have to wait just a little longer to see long-time backstop Salvador Perez back in a Royals’ uni. Salvy is the latest player to allow his name to be released after testing positive for coronavirus. Perez is asymptomatic as of right now, and though he personally stressed that people should wear their masks, he feels well enough to play (though he can’t, at least for now), per The Athletic’s Alec Lewis.

After missing all of 2019, the 30-year-old Perez was looking to get back to his role as the Royals’ everyday catcher. The Royals have five other catchers in their 60-man player pool: Nick Dini, Cam Gallagher, MJ Melendez, Sebastian Rivero, and Meibrys Viloria. Gallagher and Viloria would figure to get the gameday starts if Perez isn’t back in time, though Dini could also get a look after appearing in 20 games for the big-league club in 2019.

Perez is a career .266/.297/.442 hitter over eight seasons with the Royals. He’s one of the last remaining members of the back-to-back pennant-winning clubs from 2014 and 2015, along with Alex Gordon and Danny Duffy.

Are all these players coming out to be positive included with the 31/3100 players that were announced yesterday or additional to that?

Included in that. They’re just allowing their names to be released now to get people to wear their damn masks.

I don’t see how him allowing his name out gets others to wear masks. Either he was wearing a mask when he caught it, or he wasn’t. Neither is a good look for “setting an example.”

Another asymptomatic player. Nearly everyone who has this is asymptomatic or mild symptoms. Starting to wonder if shutting down the world is/was the right thing to do…

      Lol ok bro.

Go ask Tommy Hottovy about symptoms before you say something stupid like this again.

Tommy H is one cherry picked example. The data is what it is now. The large majority of athletes testing positive are asymptomatic or have a very mild case.

That was not known back in March. Shutting down was the only call.

The problem is asymptomatic people can still get others sick

Relatively young professional athletes are not the sample size we should be basing public policy off of. Just a thought.

Athletes have the same asymptomatic symptoms as the rest of the healthy people. Which is the vast majority. 95% survive

Probably could have gotten those “preexisting” conditions fixed if people weren’t scared of outrageous medical bills.

I personally dont think shutting down was the right thing, but everyone’s opinion on that is different and in the end I dont believe it matters. Though the majority of this players are asymptomatic, this is still kind of scary how already so many players are getting sick.

The relatives and friends of the 130,000 Americans who have died so far probably wish we’d shut things down sooner.

This is going to be a common theme this year if they are able to play the season in full. Two players go out, two more come in to replace them. I just don’t know how they are going to prevent a team wide spread if it gets through the doors of the stadiums. It may very well start spreading during the incubation period (before a test shows up positive). If that happens, they’ll have to shut down entirely.

If there is any good news at all, it seems like everyone who has tested positive in MLB so far seems to handling it well (no ‘bad’ sicknesses or hospitalizations yet). But the real question is, is it worth the risk? What are the long term issues with contracting COVID? Players willingness to play through this is admirable.

Did Salvy get cursed or something? He’s been out every year with something. Get better soon.

Anyone else have an issue of repeatedly getting kicked out of here? I’ve not made anywhere near the comments of some others on here but yet have my account suspended. I also have emailed those controlling speech on here and have received no reply. Not a very good way to run a site, but I’ll give it one last shot.
