AL Injury Notes: Simmons, Yankees, S. Perez, Astros

By Connor Byrne | August 21, 2020 at 6:57pm CDT

The Angels reinstated Andrelton Simmons from the 10-day injured list and placed catcher Max Stassi (right quad strain, knee bruise) on the IL, the team announced. Simmons is back after a three-plus-week absence because of a sprained left ankle. It could be an interesting upcoming 10 days for Simmons, a soon-to-be free agent whom the non-contending Angels may choose to move before the Aug. 31 trade deadline. Regardless, the 30-year-old Simmons will spend the next month-plus trying to boost his stock before he reaches the open market for the first time in his career. He dealt with injury issues (including to his ankle) during a down season in 2019, and he has hit a mere .188/.188/.250 in 16 plate appearances this year.

  • Yankees manager Aaron Boone issued updates Friday on a few of their key players who are on the IL, telling WFAN (via Marly Rivera of ESPN.com) that right fielder Aaron Judge is “likely” to be in the Yankees’ lineup for their next game (that won’t be this weekend, as their series with the Mets was postponed). Judge has been down for a week with a mild calf strain. Meanwhile, second baseman DJ LeMahieu is doing “significantly better” as he recovers from the left thumb sprain that sent him to the IL last weekend. And reliever Zack Britton, whom the Yankees shelved Thursday with a strained left hamstring, should recover “on the shorter side.”
  • The Royals announced that they’ve placed catcher Salvador Perez on the IL, retroactive to Aug. 18, with left eye central serous chorioretinopathy and recalled left-hander Randy Rosario. Perez’s issue has bothered him since last weekend and hampered his vision, though it’s not believed to be a long-term problem. After missing all of last year because of Tommy John surgery, Perez was enjoying a strong return season with a .307/.326/.511 line, four home runs and a 25 percent caught-stealing percentage prior to going to the IL.
  • Astros outfielder Michael Brantley is eligible for activation Saturday, but manager Dusty Baker told Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle and other reporters he’s “not real optimistic” that will happen. It seems Brantley will need a bit more time to recover from a right quad injury that has kept him out since Aug. 11. Baker also suggested (via Rome) that yet another Astro – right-hander Josh James – will probably go on the IL. James suffered a hip injury and had to be helped off the field in Colorado on Thursday. That continued a nightmare of a season for James, who has surrendered 13 earned runs on 12 hits and 14 walks (with 13 strikeouts) in 10 2/3 innings.

i dearly hope the angels extend simmons. fletcher is great but he lacks range to play ss full time. and he is perfect fit for 2b.

They should resign Teheran as well.

I agree Fletcher is a Gold Glove 2B if he plays there fulltime. He’s not Simmons defensively at SS, but he is a very smart player and 100% rock solid.

Is Fletcher good enough at SS to let Simmons leave and use the savings on a FA pitcher this off season?

As a side note, given the Angels current starting pitching struggles, is it time to give Barria and Pena a few starts?

I mean, he’s not completley range-less at shortstop. Since 2019, he has +1.4 range runs above average, and that was only through 463.2 innings. Considerin he also has +5 DRS, and a 8.7 UZR/150 at short as well, it’s not out of the question whether or not he would be a Gold Glove candidate at short.

I do not think Los Angeles will resign Simmons. They can get something for him and resign him in the off season.

Sure, they can get something for him. The question is can they really get anything significant enough? Simmons is a great defender and a good player, but there’s not really any true contenders in need of a SS. Even fringe contenders have SS spoken for. Then the question becomes; is the fringe looking to make moves or stay as is. Seems like always pitching will be in demand as will plus offensive bats, Simmons well I can see the Angels just holding.

with Gleyber Torres going on the IL the Yankees could use Simmons and move Torres back to 2B hoping that kind of deal will jumpstart his offense. The Angels would probably take young pitching propect or bullpen help.

Yanks will make the playoffs, guaranteed and they will have DJL and Torres back weeks prior, meanwhile they put Andujar at 3rd, Urshela at SS, Estrada or Wade at 2B and Voit/Ford at first with Matt Duffy a slick infielder on reserve, no need for Simmons

@trout27 Why would the Yankees need Simmons when even their backups play average to plus D? The only need is a SP.

Idk if you jump start his offense by inserting a worse hitter. The yanks infield offense isn’t exactly screaming Simmons is an upgrade. By default inserting Simmons downgrades two positions offensively. That doesn’t make much sense.

Like I said moving Simmons would be tough, not because he’s a bad player, but the state of the league is loaded at SS. True Contending teams don’t need a SS, and of the fringe I’m not sure you’re parting with P help. If you are, probably not what Angels are looking for anyways. The caveat here is a terrible injury, which honestly I pray doesn’t happen.

Simmons for Judge should get a trade done.

The saving grace is every Yankee injury is Grade 1, the mildest strains (3 weeks max) and their bench depth is unmatched in the league, The Yanks B squad will easily play .500 ball and the playoffs are 5 weeks out

You are correct but it is worrisome that so many are going down; unfortunately, I think you will see Judge & co go back on the IL relatively soon. Sucks but it’s been the trend.
