Dodgers Call Up Gavin Lux

By Mark Polishuk | August 29, 2020 at 11:10am CDT

The Dodgers have recalled infielder Gavin Lux up to their Major League roster, the team announced.  Right-hander Mitch White has been optioned to the team’s alternate training site to make roster space.

Lux is making a quick return to the L.A. roster just two days after making a one-game cameo as the 29th man in a doubleheader against the Giants.  That lone game (which saw Lux go 0-for-3 with two strikeouts) was the star prospect’s only bit of MLB action this season, as he has spent the rest of the year at the Dodgers’ alternate training site.

It remains to be seen if this promotion will stick, or if Lux could be on something of a regular shuttle between the Dodgers’ active roster and taxi squad.  Manager Dave Roberts indicated earlier this month that Lux wouldn’t be called up unless the team was ready to give him everyday playing time, and it’s possible a more regular role could emerge given the status of Justin Turner.  The veteran third baseman left last night’s game with a hamstring problem that Roberts hoped was only a cramp, though more won’t be known until Turner undergoes extra tests today.

Should Turner require a stint on the injured list, the Dodgers could shuffle their infield by giving third-base at-bats to any of Max Muncy, Enrique Hernandez, or Chris Taylor, thus opening the door for Lux to play second base.  As always with the Dodgers, they could easily rotate all of these players around the diamond (and through the DH spot) based on matchups.

Lux is one of baseball’s top prospects, and a dominant performance in Triple-A last season led to his first MLB promotion, and a .240/.305/.400 slash line over 82 plate appearances in 2019.  Lux has only played second base at the Major League level but he does a lot of minor league experience as a shortstop, so his arrival will give Los Angeles a bit of extra depth behind Corey Seager.

Bout time. I knew I should’ve changed my ROY pick when he got sent down. But then again, my runner up was Dustin May lol.

If he keeps it up I think Alec Bohm could win NL rookie of the year

I think it’s going to be hard for these guys to catch up to the year Jake Cronenworth is having.

        Bohm?
I realize no one pays attention to the team in S.D. but maybe take a look at Rake Cronenworth stats….while also playing every infield position with premiere defense as well.

Did Justin Turner end up getting injured on that play last night? I presume that’s why they’d call him up.

Hopefully just needs a couple days off.

We don’t know if it’s IL or not. But I’d bet he’s not playing defense for a few days minimum. With the stars Lad will sometimes wait a day or two before going to the IL to see if they recover before the full 10 days. Their bench can cover it so they run short hoping to get them back quicker. But JT’s reaction Last night to the bench right away to me says he’s out for at least a few days

Not. He will sit again on Sunday and be reevaluated on the off-day Monday.

I hear ya, but too early to say not. It’s not yet at this point. If he’s feeling good Monday, great. But he seems closer to the IL than not at this moment imo, based on what we know

If he was a bust the Dodgers would have traded him already because the Dodgers are smart like that

I know it’s early, but Lux is looking more like Andy LaRoche than Joc Pederson. The Dodgers have had pretty good success with their prospects, but no team has everyone pan out.

Joc has been a good player but not a guy you hope the #2 prospect in baseball becomes. The “prospects bust” argument is lazy anyway. Lux is not Andy Laroche.

Lux will be fine. Major League Baseball is all about patience. I laugh at those so-called fans who want every slumping player to be banished to the bench. If these fans had their way, there would be no one left to play the games. As a Dodger fan, I’ve got to say the majority of our fans are the worst. All those years of arriving late and leaving early have taken a toll. It is embarrassing. Name another big-league ballpark where people still do the wave.

You said Lux would be the equivalent of the biggest IF bust for the Dodgers over the last 20 years…. because of a late Covid start and 25 games last year?

          That’s pretty lazy Briffle. Yessir

If you want to say it’s rushed and overreacting I get that, but lazy? Right lol.

I mean, now we are just arguing semantics+what words mean in certain contexts.

But a me, a “rushed” opinion on calling a top prospect a bust is lazy. So, yeah. With Lux you’re scouting 20 games man! Just like assuming a guy who’s having a great rookie year and no track record will suddenly be an all star for the next 6 years. You’re ignoring everything he did before for years in the minors and just care about his cup of coffee? Yeah, It’s lazy….

So burning moves on Lux every other day? Guess they aren’t worried about service time. Kudos to them!
