10:47am: Major League Baseball announced, via press release, that the Mets will host the Marlins for a doubleheader tomorrow, which will make up for last Thursday’s postponement. The upcoming weekend Subway Series against the Yankees will indeed include doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday, as Sherman previously reported.
8:10am: The Mets have not had any further positive Covid-19 tests since a player and coach tested positive last Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports (via Twitter). The team is expected to resume play Tuesday with a three-game series against the visiting Marlins.
Last week’s series finale against the same Marlins club was postponed due to the initial tests, so it’s possible there will now be a doubleheader baked into this upcoming three-game set in order to make up for that lost contest.
This past weekend’s scheduled Subway Series against the Yankees was also wiped out, although the two sides should be able to make up those three games, assuming continued negative tests. The Mets are slated to play a three-game series in the Bronx beginning Friday. Sherman further tweets that the current plan is for the Yankees and Mets to play doubleheaders both Friday and Sunday this coming weekend, with an additional makeup game set to fall on Sept. 3, when both clubs had an off-day scheduled.
So the Mets are playing the Mets? Hmm
Yes. It’s the quickest way to make up games. 2 for 1.
Brilliant maneuver. Guarantees a .500 winning percentage, which gives them a better chance to make the expanded postseason.
The Pirates could do the same and still end up playing .250 baseball.
and degrom will still get a no decision
Mets expected to resume their season with a series against the visiting Mets?
Ha, thank you. Obviously meant the Marlins there but clear Monday morning brain lapse. It’s been updated.
It’s probably better if Mets play themselves the bullpen will only fail 50%
or 200%
or double the pay for Bobby Bonilla.
Another one who knows Nothing: Bullpens been fine this year – Starting Put Pitching has been. The problem.
Fine? The best reliever just got moved into the rotation.
nymetsking. Exactly. The problem isn’t the rotation or bullpen. It’s a lack of overall pitching depth. Some bad luck with injuries and an opt-out shouldn’t force a team to turn a perceived strength into a weakness.
By the way, will Rosario ever draw another walk? It is now 133 plate appearances and counting, and he still doesn’t look smooth at shortstop. Gimenez at that position would greatly assist that pitching staff.
Cey Hey, I think you’re being a little unfair. The Mets had plenty of pitching depth on paper. They lost their number 2 starter to an injury before the season started. Their number 3 starter opted out of the season. These are abnormal circumstances that would have hurt any time in the league. The Mets addressed some of their issues with the additions of Porcello and Wacha, but even that bandaid didn’t work because of my injuries.
Now also, to counter my point and agree with yours, the Braves rotation was devastated even more than the Mets, and the Braves sit in first place. They definitely have more depth, and are a better team in general, but I don’t think it’s fair to blame the Mets organization for a lack of depth. The Mets got some bad luck this year.
Bad depth is not the same as good depth. Did you see Wacha pitch in 2019? He was horrible. Meanwhile, the Dodgers haven’t missed a beat despite losing three SPs in the off-season (Rya, Maeda, Hill), one to opt-out (Price), and two to injury (W00d, Nelson). They have pitchers on their taxi squad who are better than any Mets starter not named deGrom. Oakland has been lights-out despite rotation injuries, Cleveland despite Clevinger and Plesac being removed from the active roster. The Yankees have Braves keep winning despite multiple SPs being unavailable. The Astros and Cubs too. The Mets haven’t been hit harder by injuries than those teams. The difference is that the Mets have poor organizational depth. It’s why they fade every year ay the first sign of adversity. Not enough good players to compete with the better teams.
The Mets have a very difficult road ahead in terms of schedule and double headers. Hopefully they can cope better than the Marlins and Phillies did.
I give my deepest sympathy to Mr. Met. I hope Is feeling better & he is staying 6-8 feet away from Mrs. Met during these difficult times of uncertainty. At least the Mets didn’t get swept this weekend. So that’s one good thing that happened this weekend.
Shut up loser
Grow up, David.
He has a good head on his shoulders. He’ll have a ball when he’s back.
I heard Mrs. Met is spending the time sheltering in place with Mr. Redleg. She’s really into the handlebar moustache …
Any update on when Lugo will make his rotation debut?
Sincerely,
Edwin Diaz’s realtor
Probably not soon – Peterson & Wacha will be ready for the extra weekend games.
Although, if Lugo can go 3 IP in a 7 inning game, that’s a different impact than 3/9…
A problem with the postponement is they lose a deGrom start. Ideally, they win Jake’s starts and split the other four games. In a 60-game season, not having that one deGrom start could be significant. They need him pitching 12 times, not 11, The possibility of three doubleheaders in six days means they’ll have to get a decent start or two from unexpected sources.
Perfect analysis, Cey Hey.
Leave it to the Mets to blow their best chance to beat the injury-riddled Yankees in a series. It’s simply amazing how bad their misfortunes are.
Branch Rickey used to say luck is the residue of design. The Mets’ bad luck is due to being a poorly-designed team. They aren’t built to win, with exhibit A being their porous defense. Finally, they have a plus defender in Gimenez. So what do they do when Rosario returns from the injury? Sit the good defender in favor of the bad one.
Actually the Mets got to pound the Marlins replacement roster over 6 times. So they are quitw fortunate. The Marlins were pretty good to start the season and the Mets didn’t have to play them until that roster was depleted. That being said, tough road ahead for the Mets. I have no idea how good they are because their wins so far have been against bad teams. The entire NL East has had a tough time of it this year. Phillies, Mets and Marlins have all been sidelined and face ridiculously hard schedules for the remainder of the year.
Double headers Tuesday, Friday AND Sunday for the Mets? Sure, that’s fair. Nine games in 6 days or 15% of their schedule in less than a week!
Rojas can pull this off with some decent pitching performance’s from deGrom. If he starts him in game 1 of two of those double headers and deGrom goes all 7, it’s manageable. Need to tag team Lugo and Gsellman in game 2 of two doubleheaders. That saves the ‘pen for Wednesday, Thursday, day off (Friday double dip) and Saturday. With having these last few days off, everyone should be ready.
Manfred just wanted the Yanks a few days to heal.
Seems unfair to have them make up both games this weekend at Yankee Stadium. Why couldn’t they do a DH one day in The Bronx and the other day in Queens? Not like they have to worry about tickets being sold.
It’s a joke of a ballpark with that short fence in right. Nothing but cheap home runs that would be easy outs in 29 other ballparks. Even the old stadium’s dimensions were better. I’m hoping Nimmo, McNeil, Conforto, and Cano make use of it.
are they getting home games for the 2 makeups?
On September 3 they do. With the other one, I believe they will serve as the home team (bat last) in a game at Yankee Stadium. Such a weird season.
C’mon Steve get this done!!!
