Red Sox To Reportedly Add Triston Casas To Player Pool

By Connor Byrne | August 17, 2020 at 6:42pm CDT

The Red Sox are set to add first base prospect Triston Casas to their 60-man player pool, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. He’ll head to their alternate site. As Cotillo notes, Boston’s pool is at capacity, so it’ll have to make a corresponding move once Casas is officially part of it.

Now 20 years old, Casas became a member of the Red Sox when they drafted him 26th overall in 2018. Last season, his first full campaign in the minors, Casas held his own with a .256/.350/.480 line and 20 home runs between Single-A and High-A (all but seven of his 500 plate appearances came at Single-A). Once he joins Boston’s player pool, Casas will be eligible for a trade before the Aug. 31 deadline, but that’s a moot point here, as Cotillo writes that the team’s goal in calling him up is to aid in his development.

In other Red Sox moves Monday, they activated lefty reliever Josh Taylor from the injured list, optioned righty Chris Mazza and placed infielder Christian Arroyo on the IL, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe tweets. Taylor, who was strong as a rookie in 2019 but hasn’t pitched this year because of a positive coronavirus test, should be a welcome addition for a struggling club with a deeply flawed pitching staff. As for Arroyo, whom the Red Sox claimed via waivers from the Indians on Aug. 13, his IL placement (retroactive to the 14th) was done to give him more time to join his new club as he goes through coronavirus protocols.

Looking for a shining moment in a dismal season. Not sure this is the answer.

I think this is more of an indication that there’s a possibility of trading someone that covers a similar position before the deadline. They want him ready in case they need another player at the major league level after deals are made.

They have Dalbec if anyone, I don’t think they’d start Casas’ clock already

Agree. No chance Casas gets his 1st AB’s at MLB level in 2020 and probably not 2021 either. 1b is one position they have covered just fine with Chavis, dalbec and could throw former prospect Ockimey out there a few games if need be. No reason to rush someone who has never played above A ball when the refuse to allow pitcher’s like Houck and mata to start games and they desperately need starters.

Even if he doesn’t play a major league game, it is something.

I think either Moreland or yes Chavis could be dealt. Unlike others, to me Chavis is the one to deal. No one else sees him as a strikeout machine who will never develop sufficiently to overcome his mediocre defense?
That said, he’s young, under control with MLB experience. Thus he has return value to others if not me.

If they put him on the 40, won’t his service clock start? Unsure if at this point it makes a difference but I think the idea is to get him playing in camp.

I think this is the first step for the Sox to start bringing up the kids. Casas most likely will not get called up but Houck, Mata, Dalbec, Downs, Duran and possibly even Groome should all get a chance this year in the majors. There will be zero pressure on them and it will serve as a good barometer to see just how close any of them are to making an impact at the major league level. There is no reason to keep running Peraza, Moreland, Bradley, etc.. out there every day. Let’s see what the kids can do so Chaim can start building the next great Sox team. This sure as hell isn’t it!

Their season is basically over so they might as well bring up the kids to see if they can play or not. The Sox will still get a high draft position .

dlevin11 unfortunately not matter how much Boston tanks this year, they’ll have the same draft pick they had for this year, 17th. This is because of Covid and the shorten season. The idea was to prevent teams to purposefully tank a 60 game season. It would be in the Sox best interest, if possible, to get good trades that roll into next season.

dlevin11 that doesn’t inaccurate. I haven’t seen any sources that said that next year’s draft is based on last year’s record.

Going to be many many dry years with this team unless they spend some money. I cannot see that with Bloom running things. He is going to turn this into a B Baseball City.

NESN and seat costs will demand spending once they reset the tax base and COVID is behind us. This coming off season, only pitching if anything should be spent on. Hoping JDM doesn’t get traded nor opts out. Would prefer he remain as he’ll return to being the best hitter in the AL outside of Trout and to me, he sets the tone for the team.

Groome is a good two years from MLB ready even if healthy and guys like Durran and Mata dont have a lot of high minors experience and neither of them played too well in their first tastes of AA action. Dalbec and Houck should be close to ready but the rest would probably be reaches to call up now.

They should just bring everyone up because this team absolutely is abysmal! I cannot remember when they last won a game. Just a really bad team!

Either Moreland or Chavis could be traded. More likely Moreland. This team will be making a bunch of moves at the deadline. Its a lost season and these trades will help with restocking the farm. JD, JBJ and Moreland are probably top trade names

Hoping it’s Chavis that gets dealt as his return should be much higher than MM and I’m just not sold on him long term.

This is absolutely the worst Red Sox team that I have seen since the 1960s. Bloom and Henry should be ashamed and it is going to take a long time to get rid of the stink of this season and the team Bloom put together including trading their best home grown talented player. The fans are going to have to let their discontent show.
