The Angels have acquired lefty Jose Salvador from the Reds, per club announcements. That completes the recent swap in which the Halos sent outfielder Brian Goodwin to Cincinnati.
With the news, the Los Angeles organization has now added two southpaw pitching prospects in exchange for Goodwin. The other player headed west is Packy Naughton.
Salvador had not been a member of the Reds’ 60-man player pool. He was added in advance of this announcement and will now take a slot in the L.A. pool.
Soon to turn 21, Salvador has yet to move past the rookie ball level as a professional. Through two campaigns, he carries a cumulative 3.07 ERA with a healthy combination of 11.6 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9.

Pitching. Now we’re headed in the right direction.
Cabrera4l
The losing direction. We continue to acquire pitchers that haven’t proven that they are stable or no experience
bkbkbkbk
Lol. This anti eppler bunch looking to get Mckenziie Gore for Anthony Bemboom. Damn, y’all savage.
prov356
Cabrera – We’re acquiring pitchers for our farm system. That’s what we need. Some won’t work out, some will. We have to start somewhere, and this is where.
jabronieramone
Royalsfan12
Be glad you got something for him. Royals gave up a decent pitching prospect for him and then released him. DM gives up on players too quickly.

Yes and no. The Angels need to get relief pitchers, so this is good. But they also can’t HOPE, they find serviceable relievers. They have to get them.
The A’s don’t have this problem and they don’t have nearly the money the Angels have.
Michaelchavez22
I still think you guys should see what top tier pitching Adell would get you. Just cast a net and see what it catches. Trout won’t be young forever.
erauber
You’re not getting that for Goodwin. A good move to stockpile options
Vizionaire
good pick up.
imindless
Just wait, next year looks like a top 2 pick then you add Kumar or Leiter than farm looks wayyyy better.
Padres458
It really doesn’t though. We also dont know how the draft will work.
imindless
@padres458 Outlook is much better than padres. Outside of tatis who was developed in another farm what have padres produced? Franmils doing better on another squad lol patino sucks, and paddack does too. Gore is ballyhooed but has a 4 era in double a, massively overrated. The rotation looks like the days of cashner and co. Patchwork at best. Also to name a few angels developed into recent years trout, calhoun, richards, fletcher……
Netflix&RichHill
The Pads didn’t lose any of their top 4 prospects and I think kept 6 or 7 out of their top 10. The Padres are looking Waaaaaaay better than the Angels. Dodgers fan here, so I have no horse in this race
imindless
@netflix what I’m saying is name a padres prospect that has actually developed into an all star player for the padres. Tatis spent most of the minors in whitesox before being delt for Shields and the rest is history. Padres(always bad) always have a top rated farm but yield little in terms of players.
User 355748524
@imindless. I think I’ll wait and see how the Padres prospects ACTUALLY end up performing rather then make assumptions based off my biased opinion.
Thanks for sharing your take though. I personally found it amusing, to say the least.
imindless
@jacob cook so instead of basing it on your teams terrible track record you would rather live in delusion? Got it. Matt wisler, Sean Burroughs, Austin hedges, Anderson Espinosa, Donovan Tate, Casey Kelly. The lists go on and on outside of tatis this farm has yielded little so trading those prospects is the smartest thing preller could do!
Daynlokki
@imindless I will counter you with saying the developed Tatis as he was traded before ever playing ONE game with the White Sox.
User 355748524
Prospects are called prospects for a reason. That said:
Matt Wisler: Drafted pre-Preller. Who knows when he was destined for ‘organizational fodder’ duties, so when he became a bust is in the air and up for debate.
Sean Burroughs: Drafted Pre-Preller. Player played under and was drafted by the former regime.
Austin Hedges: Drafted pre-Preller. Showed signs of struggling offensively when he moved up to AA the year prior to Preller being hired. I’d say it’s probably not Prellers fault, but I have no f’ing clue who stunted his growth, but don’t forget the player is responsible for himself.
Anderson Espinoza: Acquired from the White Sox. Has not pitched in the Majors due to injuries, but is still in the Padres organization. Too early to tell, but feel free to judge as you do.
Donovan Tate: Drafted pre-Preller. Played one year under the new GM, but became a bust well before that season.
Casey Kelly: Drafted (1st) overall by Red Sox and acquired pre-Preller. Was already struggling with injuries and pitching bad prior to Prellers hiring.
Past and current stats are benchmarks for predicting the future. They are not the end results for the future. A.J. Preller is not the former GM and I doubt they run operations in the same manner, though I’m sure that can be debated.
You have your right to your opinion, as all of us do. I simply felt that it would-be wise to see things through rather then make assumptions, but I digress as that is my sole opinion on the matter.
Now, I will summarize my words so that we can part ways mutually: I disagree with your opinion and you disagree with my opinion.
There, we can both leave and not waste our time shoving our perspectives down each other’s throat.
Stay safe and best luck to your team.

We are basing the padres ability to evaluate talent and the major league level. This dates back to the 80’s the only notable players padres have produced in tony Gwynn and tatis.
I said that angels farm is better and stated several players in the last 8 years that have turned into mlb regulars and including mike trout. @padres458 stated that their future isn’t bright. My statement was the padres don’t draft well and can’t develop players.
Followed up with a list of top rated padres prospect over the years and you simply throw that under oh well that wasn’t under preller…..lol since he has been there outside of tatis none of the guys he drafted have made an impact!!!!!
He has been there like 6 years now lol he had to trade most of the prospect to get useful players from other teams!!! Cornenworth (Tampa), Grisham (Brewers) Hosmer (royals) machado (orioles) paddack( miami) Pham (cards) Clevinger (indians) Davies (Brewers) which much credit to preller for recognizing that the prospects 90 percent of the time don’t amount to anything so trading for mlb trade is huge. Certainly a fun team to watch definitely outperforming their projections we will see how far it goes.
Michaelchavez22
Clevinger was drafted by the Angels
Michael Chaney
I’ll be surprised if Kumar isn’t a Pirate. Even if Manfred chooses to move around the draft order, they’re bad enough that they definitely deserve the top pick. And Leiter is a great young pitcher, but Kumar is just on another level.
imindless
So the angels have
Bundy
Canning
Barria (looks back to his form from 2018)
Heaney
Ohtani (return next year under a full offseason)
Detmers?
The only real holes are pujols and upton and probably catcher.
Birdieman2
You’re drunk if you think this team can replace Pujols, Upton, and catcher and be as good as Oakland or Houston.
Vizionaire
at this rate angel will more than likely get a top pick. sigh.
SashaBanksFan
At least we only have to suffer through 60 games instead of 162 to get a top 2-3 pick.
dirkg
I think after the brutal start and the loss of Ohtani on the mound; a high draft pick has been the strategy. Right or wrong, I think that’s the approach.
Tsizzle27
The Angels need pick 1 or 2. At 3, it’s a reach for all of the other pitching prospects after Rocker and Leiter. Knowing the Angels, that means they’ll likely land at 3.
SashaBanksFan
I guess that means I hope for a pirates winning streak
hiflew
I have watched Goodwin play in 2 games for the Reds and I have a question for Angels fans. Does this guy make boneheaded plays on a regular basis or is it just dumb luck that he made one in both games? He got doubled off 2nd base from the warning track by the right fielder following a catch when the Reds were trailing by TWELVE! with one out. I didn’t think that was possible outside of Little League. Then tonight he made possibly the worst route to a routine single that I have ever seen and it turned into a double. I am just curious if this was just a couple of out of the ordinary plays for him or if it is something I need to get used to.
imindless
@hiflew yes he looks lost at times, the value lies within his bat to be honest. Decent power, contact and obp. As far as fielding he seems to not know how to read the ball of the bat and relys on his physical ability to make up the difference. To be fair adell looks just as lost
HalosHeavenJJ
He’ll take a bad read here and there. Did a couple times when he first got here. I remember a bad play on opening night last year.
But in general he’s steady, will even flash a little range at times.
HalosHeavenJJ
So by FanGraphs ratings a 45 FV and 35 FV prospect for 2 plus years of a cost controlled outfielder.
SashaBanksFan
What does FV stand for?
HalosHeavenJJ
Future value. It goes on a scale of 20-80 so those numbers aren’t good.
5toolMVP
Maybe Eppler added them together, 45+35=80 and thought…damn this is a STEAL!!!!
HalosHeavenJJ
Ha ha. Great post.
kahnkobra
packy naughton, rooting for him if only because of the name
jules
Packy is how he wants to be called, his real one is Patrick….
petersdylan36
So random but in my head
How far back can you trace trades to current Mlb players.
For example, and this is the condensed version as I know there were more players in each trade:
The padres acquired Andy Ashby from the Rockies in 1993
Traded him to the Phillies for Adam Eaton (the pitcher)
Traded Adam Eaton for Adrian Gonzalez
Traded adrian gonzalez for Anthony Rizzo
Trade Rizzo for cashner
Cashner for Naylor
Naylor for Clevinger.
So a trade from 1993 facilitated a trade in 2020
SalaryCapMyth
Andy Ashby. Now there’s a name I haven’t heard for a while. I actually love reading about these kinds of trade family trees so to speak. It makes everything look not so distant when you can connect a pitcher who was in his prime during the second half of the 90’s to a player like Rizzo who is playing now.
bkbkbkbk
This is awesome
darkstar61
Not sure on others, but because of Kluber, I do know one such chain dating back to either 1977 or 1988, depending on how you consider resignings
Jerry Dybzinski drafted by Cleveland in 1977
Dybzinski sent to White Sox for Pat Tabler in 1983
Tabler sent to the Royals for Bud Black in 1988
(Indians resign Black after that 1988 season, so this is where chain could technically be considered as starting)
Black sent to the Blue Jays for Alex Sanchez in 1990
Sanchez sent back to Blue Jays for Willie Blair in 1990
Blair sent to Astros for Kenny Lofton in 1991
Lofton sent to Braves for David Justice in 1997
Justice sent to Yankees for Jake Westbrook in 2000
3 team deal sends Westbrook to Cardinals, Indians get Corey Kluber from Padres in 2010
Kluber became Delino Deshields Jr and Emmanuel Clase (suspended, but 5-6 years of control left) in 2020
SalaryCapMyth
Well at least they got pitching. Getting young, undeveloped pitching may very well be the best way for the Angels to develop some rotation help. Taking on the greater risk of less developed pitchers may mean greater potential. The biggest problem is, this kid is probably 3 or 4 years away from being significant help if he makes the BIGS at all.
bo23
Packy will make it by the end of next year. And have A very long career. If he stays healthy. I would not have traded him for Goodwin! Packy will not be a Hof, but very serviceable for a long time.
antibelt
Safe trade. Best bet would be to trade TROUT. Get a team’s best 3 pitching prospects and lower level infield prospect. Can’t win of you can’t pitch.
Birdieman2
Sober up dude
