Astros Release Fernando Rodney

By Jeff Todd | September 2, 2020 at 10:09pm CDT

The Astros have released veteran hurler Fernando Rodney, per Jake Kaplan of The Athletic (via Twitter). He had been in the team’s 60-man player pool on a minor-league deal.

Rodney opened the year throwing with the indy ball Sugar Land Skeeters, giving the ’Stros a chance to determine he was worthy of a closer look. But the 43-year-old hurler evidently didn’t impress at the team’s alternate training site.

When last we saw Rodney in action, he had enough in the tank to be a significant contributor to the 2019 World Series-winning Nats. He worked to a 4.05 ERA in 33 1/3 regular-season innings and was handed the ball six times in the postseason.

It remains to be seen whether this is the end of the line for the ageless reliever. He was still averaging better than 94 ticks on his heater last year. In his 17 total MLB campaigns, Rodney carries a 3.80 ERA over 933 innings.

Been thinking this for 5 years but he always finds a new home and does enough to earn another chance.

I would be not shocked if he finds himself in a contending team bullpen soon.

The Astros are a playoff team with a pitching staff incredibly depleted by injuries. All trash can jokes aside – even if they’re coming – if Rodney couldn’t stick in Houston right now, he’s gotta be done.

Or Red Sox who shoukd bring back Bill Lee. My guess is even at his age he could get more batters out than some they are using. it also would be fun to put the band back together. Lee, Carbo, Wise and Cleveland. if not them, how about their grandkids? Imagine the stories that could be written.

Here’s the thing – you don’t get to complain about writing when you, yourself, suck at it. Those are the rules. Either adapt or calm down… and still adapt.

I agree. Save the baseball jargon for the hoops section. More hockey talk on the baseball page, please.

Plus what are you even talking about? The article was only what… 3 paragraphs long… and it’s not like there was anything confusing in it haha… not sure what “Jargon” was so upsetting but I read it 3 times trying to understand where gdByers was coming from and came up empty.

Don’t use to much baseball jargon on a baseball site. The only thing I can give you credit for is finding something to complain about that I have not yet heard on this site and would never have expected.

Some guys you just have to rip the uniform off of them. Rodney’s in that category. Eventually he just won’t be able to play anymore. I hope he’s not quite there yet.

Rodney would be the oldest player in MLB this season if he can make an appearance. He is also the last player older than me in the Bigs. So I am rooting for him. Go old guys.

I think Pujols (1980) is the oldest. Rich Hill, Nelson Cruz, and Rajai Davis are also 1980.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I heard someone use “winning percentage” when discussing the effectiveness of a relief pitcher. People don’t even usually judge starters that way anymore, thank God, but a relief pitcher?
