Cardinals Set Wild Card Roster; Carlos Martinez Shut Down For Season

By Steve Adams and Connor Byrne | September 30, 2020 at 3:21pm CDT

The Cardinals announced their first-round postseason roster Wednesday, which does not include right-hander Carlos Martinez. The 29-year-old Martinez sustained an oblique strain late in the season and president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told reporters today that Martinez has been shut down for the year and returned home to the Dominican Republic. Martinez struggled mightily this season anyhow, yielding more than a run per inning, so a spot on the postseason roster might not even have been a given. He’ll hope for better health and results in 2020, and in the meantime cheer on the following Cardinals roster as they take on the fourth-seeded Padres:

Right-Handed Pitchers

  • Jack Flaherty
  • Giovanny Gallegos
  • Ryan Helsley
  • Johan Oviedo
  • Daniel Ponce de Leon
  • Alex Reyes
  • Adam Wainwright
  • Kodi Whitley

Left-Handed Pitchers

  • Genesis Cabrera
  • Austin Gomber
  • Kwang Hyun Kim
  • Tyler Webb

Catchers

  • Andrew Knizner
  • Yadier Molina
  • Matt Wieters

Infielders

  • Matt Carpenter
  • Paul DeJong
  • Tommy Edman
  • Paul Goldschmidt
  • Brad Miller
  • Rangel Ravelo
  • Brad Miller

Outfielders

  • Harrison Bader
  • Dylan Carlson
  • Austin Dean
  • Dexter Fowler
  • Tyler O’Neill

It was a trying regular season for the Cardinals, who overcame a two-week layoff during the summer that resulted from coronavirus issues. Despite having to race to catch up to the rest of the league in games played, the Cardinals managed to come in at above .500 yet again, finishing 30-28 en route to the fifth seed in the NL. The Cards will go into their series against San Diego with a “downsized” pitching staff, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes, but they could turn to Oviedo, Ponce de Leon and Gomber for multi-inning appearances out of their bullpen if needed.

4-0 after a half inning. The Pads sure are rolling over the Cardinals. Anymore predictions genius? Your name says it all.

Nothing is normal this year, cardinals should not win this series but they will, marlins don’t even belong in the playoffs but they will probably win. I’m predicting a Rays dodgers World Series

When you don’t hit with runner in position you don’t win. Also no clev no lamet hurts. Slam Diego didn’t show up today.

Breaking news!!! Houston Astros sweep the Twins (in Minnesota). Didn’t hear a single trashcan in either game. Where are you trashcan whiners now? YES,the Braves just walked off on a Freddie Freeman single. 1-0.

In their defense they played a team from the glorified AAA division.

Its fitting the Twins curse continues against the most hates team in baseball that arguably shouldn’t have even been in. not to pile on them, it sucks, but the irony is hillarious.

Cardinals appear to have two Brad Millers on the roster. No Andrew Miller but no explanation. And what about Kolten Wong?

This is incorrect. Wong and Andrew Miller ARE on the roster.

You don’t get it. Brad Miller is listed twice and there’s no Andrew Miller on the roster.

Yeah no kidding. Wong is also not listed. Thus the “Wong and Andrew Miller ARE on the roster”.

Honestly, it seems like whoever has been putting together these lists has done a piss poor job. It’s not that hard to copy it from whatever source you get it from and double check the list.

Speaking of the Cardinals: That Marcel Ozuna trade worked out perfectly, for the Marlins and the Braves. Miami got Sandy Alcantara (& others) and the Braves get a season of Ozuna, after J. Donaldson signed w the Twins.

How’d it work out for the Cards? They’re the team that made the trade.

It was ok for the cardinals…Ozuna was a big part of making it to the NLCS…the mistake was not resigning him…but I kinda understood why they didn’t…but in hindsight it was an obvious mistake…if the cardinals had Ozuna in their lineup this year they would be scary…wing and Edman set the table well…Goldy is having a great year…and then Ozuna…plus the cardinals have the pitching..I think the marlins came out better though…but the cardinals traded from a surplus of talent in pitching so it didn’t necessarily hurt them

I agree, the trade looks worse because they didn’t resign Ozuna. Just like what could happen with the Realmuto trade. It’s going to look really bad if they don’t even make the playoffs and he doesn’t resign.

I think there’s a saying in baseball that you can’t go wrong with acquiring a St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect.

The first time I saw Alcantara pitch I knew he was a stud. The velocity is great, but it’s the movement. He was a little wild, but he’s mostly figured it out (still has some games with too many walks). His K rate is going to go up as he learns more how to harnesses his stuff and turn weak outs into K’s.

Alcantara was the stud pitcher sent in the trade, but an unknown at the time that also was included was Zac Gallen. He may turn out to be the big fish that got away! Yes, the Cardinals have a bunch of great young pitching but hated to see both of those go in that trade when all they got back was two mediocre years on Ozuna. Chance you take with trades!
