Brewers Decline Ryan Braun’s Option

By Connor Byrne | October 29, 2020 at 8:06pm CDT

8:06pm: The Brewers have declined the option, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel relays.

7:57pm: Longtime Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun is now a free agent, according to the MLBPA. That suggests the Brewers have turned down their half of a $15MM mutual option for 2021 in favor of a $4MM buyout.

Because of Braun’s recent decline, it’s no surprise that Milwaukee is going this route. Nevertheless, it could bring an end to a fruitful Brewers tenure for Braun. He joined the organization as the fifth overall pick in 2005 and proceeded to turn into one of the most productive players in the history of the franchise.

From his debut in 2007 up until this past season, Braun slashed .296/.358/.532 with 352 home runs, 216 stolen bases and 43.9 fWAR over 7,340 plate appearances. Braun also racked up six All-Star nods, a Rookie of the Year and the 2011 NL MVP Award along the way, though the latter accomplishment has been tainted because of his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

Major League Baseball suspended Braun for 65 games in 2013 after finding that he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The ban cast a pall on what was an excellent career to that point, but Braun has been mostly productive at the plate since then. Injuries have taken their toll in recent years, though, and Braun is now coming off the worst offensive season of his career. The 36-year-old ended 2020 as a .233/.281/.488 hitter with eight home runs in 141 plate appearances, and he racked up almost as many appearances as a designated hitter (16) as he did an outfielder (20).

Braun said as recently as July that he’d like to continue his career in 2021, but that was before his troubles this year. He’ll now have to decide whether to continue in baseball, but if the universal DH doesn’t stick around next season, it won’t do Braun any favors should he seek another contract. Braun’s next deal (if there is one) won’t be especially lucrative.

You would turn yourself into a human pincushion in order to play pro ball…especially knowing there would be $4 million at the end regardless if you continued

That’s not the big issue. He threw the guy who tested him under the bus and ruined his career. It’s one thing to cheat. It’s another thing to cheat, and ruin an innocent drug tester’s career while doing it.

How’s that ESPN reporter doing who threw Braun under the bus? The arbitration process is secret if the player wins their case when being accused of something. Braun had won. That guy’s mistake was why. Nothing more would have happened had the ESPN reporter or insider leaked the story. Guy wouldn’t have been thrown under the bus, Braun wouldnt have had to speak to a failed test that was tainted due to the mishandling. Now when Biogenesis came about and Braun implicated there the story could have been told without the guy being in such a negative spotlight.

This is what’s wrong with society today, all the news networks base their news off social media and message board comments. Everybody just wants to constantly one up the other to come off as the smartest person in the room, it’s sad and disgusting to view on a daily basis. Carry on folks, you’re doing an admirable job of dividing us further yet.

I personally don’t care about the cheating, it’s so hard to get worked up about it after living through the steroid era, it was the throwing the collector under the bus the way he did. Braun choose to be a pincushion to earn his millions, Braun got caught and then Braun tried to pin it on the guy that makes 1/100th per year then he does. Braun will forever be that person to me, not the guy that took steroids like so many before him but the man that tried to destroy another mans life simply to save his own skin.

        These guys, man.

I played football and baseball in the 80’s. Gear was everywhere. Nobody viewed it as “cheating”. Rather, it was an all out attempt to just simply be the best ball player you could be.

The “liar, cheater” faction is exactly why I have so little trust in sports writers. People have just gobbled this up.
I wonder how many of them know what it’s like to really aspire to be excellent at anything.

Also I’m not upset, in fact I made it clear I didn’t care about his clear and obvious steroid use, I care about trying to destroy a mans life.

Being a jock isn’t the only thing someone can excel at. In schools, too much attention and money are given to sports while hardly anything goes to non-athletic endeavors that are just as vital if not more. At a middle school where I worked, I served as the advisor of the new student newspaper. It was a lot of work and I enjoyed it immensely but didn’t get a single penny for my efforts. Meanwhile, all the sports coaches got money for their afterschool gigs. And spare me that hogwash about sports building character. In a sport like football, the main lessons boys learn is how to act superior to their academic peers and being a bully. There’s nothing more aggravating in a classroom than some prima donna athlete who refuses to work hard because he thinks he’s the star of the class. Sports are not more important than the arts. In fact, I would say sports are less important.

One more thing: You should tread lightly when knocking journalists who are mainly there to keep us informed. Unfortunately, a lot of idiot leaders today are trying to cover up their own lies by telling their nitwit followers that news is fake. This is a dangerous trend that threatens our democracy. I will take great joy next Wednesday when I wake up realizing those idiots are hanging their heads and out of a job. As for journalism, the only thing you know for sure is that you can’t do it.

          I never implied it was.
To your first point, that’s a Big Reason why I send my son to private school.

Also…man, I learned a lot about myself and some important life lessons on the football field. None of which were “how to act superior and be a bully”. Quite the opposite, actually.

I don’t need to reference any personal experiences I’ve had with the media.
          So.
How can the BBWA elect Selig to the Hall while shunning the best ball players (outside of Mike Trout) that I’ve ever seen play?

Tell you why. Folks love their outrage. Look how any story on PEDs elicits a slew of MAD ONLINE!, stuff.

In fact it makes it harder in the classroom to be an athlete because teachers and professors have this notion that you do. Being a college baseball player at a smaller school. They don’t want you missing class and you are punished for it. So the athlete has to go above and beyond. Maybe a little different when you’re looking at huge schools and these stars, aka basketball one and done players, they don’t even need to go to school basically. But for 95% of us we are held accountable more than a normal student due to views as yours.

If any accusation or judgement can be cast aside simply because the one making it isn’t themselves perfect, does that also rule out prosecution by law? Admonishment at work? Like, if someone crashes into your car drunk, you can’t get mad, cuz you once stole a candy bar? I just don’t get the supposed logic.

i think Braun should get another shot… he didnt play well in 2020 but he also wasn’t exactly terrible. I mean he showed he’s still got okay power (hitting 8 HR in 39 games) and given that he hit much better in 2019 and given his tremendous track record… he definitely deserves another shot somewhere to see if he’s still got anything left in the tank. He could be a valuable enough DH/part-time DH for a team in need of some pop, or worst case scenario some pop off the bench.

I would take Braun over A-ROD on tv broadcasts all day everyday. The truth was never spilled by Rodriguez. In Braun’s case the lies came to fruition and most Brewers fans moved forward. Braun would do himself a favor and sign with the Crew for 5million as an often injured DH.
