40-Man Roster Additions: 11/1/20

By Anthony Franco | November 1, 2020 at 9:58pm CDT

With the offseason kicking off, most teams are bringing some inactive players back onto their rosters. Here’s the latest:

  • The Rockies announced they’ve activated outfielder Ian Desmond from the restricted list. Outfielder David Dahl and right-handers Peter Lambert and Scott Oberg are back from the 60-day injured list, putting Colorado’s 40-man roster tally at 38. Desmond opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and is entering his final year under contract. Dahl underwent shoulder surgery in September, capping a miserable season. Lambert, meanwhile, underwent Tommy John surgery in July. Oberg unfortunately also had to go under the knife, undergoing thoracic outlet surgery to alleviate blood clots in September.
  • The Indians reinstated right-hander Jefry Rodríguez from the 45-day injured list (via Tribeinsider). While working at Cleveland’s alternate training site, the 27-year-old went down with a strain in his throwing shoulder in early September. Rodríguez worked 98.2 innings of 5.20 ERA ball with the Nationals and Indians between 2018-19 but didn’t pitch in the majors in 2020. Cleveland’s 40-man roster now sports 35 players.
  • The Rays activated pitchers Jalen Beeks, Yonny Chirinos, Colin Poche and Cody Reed from the 45-day injured list (via Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times). Each of Beeks, Chirinos and Poche has undergone Tommy John surgery over the past few months, meaning none will be ready (or even particularly close) at the start of next season. Reed suffered an injury to his left pinky finger shortly after being acquired from the Reds. He’s expected to be a full-go for spring training, Topkin notes.
  • The Mariners have brought outfielder Mitch Haniger, catcher Tom Murphy and right-hander Andres Muñoz off the 45-day injured list, per Greg Johns of MLB.com. Haniger has dealt with a series of brutal injuries since emerging as one of the sport’s quieter stars, but he’s finally expected to be healthy next spring. Like Haniger, Murphy missed the entire 2020 season; the backstop broke a bone in his foot on the heels of a breakout 2019. Muñoz underwent Tommy John surgery while part of the Padres’ system in March. Still, the Mariners acquired the fireballing 21-year-old before the trade deadline as part of the return for Austin Nola, Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla. Seattle now has 35 players on the 40-man roster.

i know it doesnt matter, but why does a team have to acivate the players on the 60 day? what happens if a team doesny officially do it.

Great Question Dark – I was wondering the same thing. A team refuses for whatever reason and they are fined or…? and why wouldn’t they? I guess at least partly it fills the 40 man roster so they cannot add more players or hide players on the injured list especially from the Rule 5 draft.

My guess, and it’s purely guess, is they are likely either automatically activated, or if there isn’t space, they are DFA’d.

The injured list and other reserve lists don’t exist during the off-season. It’s pretty much just a formality, 40-man roster ramifications aside. If the team doesn’t activate players, then they’re probably automatically activated by MLB.

It’s just time to put them back on the 40 man, per the rules. I’ve never heard of any penalties…..

I think main thing is to ensure everyone has a fair 40 man roster for the Rule V draft.

Ex: If the Rays could stash the guys who are going to be hurt next year on the 60 day, aka also off the 40 man, that gives them 2 extra spots to potentially take someone
Best I got. I’m sure there’s an official explanation somewhere

      My question is similar.

If it’s required, but not reported until the next day, who wS supposed to report it? And how?

Was it the league’s job to update their 40 man roster lists on a Sunday? Or the teams’?

Clearly, not many press releases went out on an.NFL Sunday.

Dealing Dipoto has to regret not trading Haniger a couple of years back when his value was the highest.

Coulda Shoulda Woulda. Are people going to ever stop talking about that? Get over it. Why don’t you talk about the Heathcliff Slocumb trade while you’re at it. It’s water under the bridge.

Exactly SodoMojo90 (great name btw.) Heathcliff Slocumb trade! Haha easily one of the worst M’s (if not MLB) trades ever! Hindsight is 20/20. If you choose to focus on missing an opportunity to cash in on Haniger after his All-Star 2018 season you miss the bleeding obvious- the Mariners have tried and failed to fill the corner OF spots for 2 yrs. How can you ignore the fact that we started INF’s on the corners for nearly every game in 2020?

If Kelenic doesn’t win an OF spot in ST he will be promoted the 3rd week of April at the latest. A Lewis, Kelenic and Haniger OF has the potential to be our best OF in years. Before anyone talks about a crowded OF with Julio (2022) and Trammel coming up let me ask the question, how did Jake Fraley, Braden Bishop and Mallex Smith work out? Haniger is and always was a part of Dipoto’s plan to build a team that finally breaks the playoff hoodoo.

There is a deadline imposed by MLB to reinstate all IL players to the 40 man roster. This is so teams can’t stack their rosters with “injured” players in the offseason to manipulate their business. It is an MLB procedure that they force on each team – if I recall correctly – it is five days after the conclusion of the World Series. Technically, if a team refused to add its players back to the 40 man roster, they would be free agents.

I think you’ve got it….it’s placement on the 40, or Free Agency.

Anybody know how the Vasquez situation (Pittsburgh) works out in terms of their 40? Do they have to keep him there? Send him to Perry Mason? Have him run for office?

The Vazquez situation is unique because MLB placed him on administrative leave pending a criminal investigation. The restricted list might be an exception, though, because Andrew Toles has been on the Dodgers’ restricted list since the beginning of last year, and he’ll probably remain there indefinitely because he’s not accruing service time.

I feel like a healthy Mitch Haniger would be really good for baseball. I hope he can put these major health scares behind him and get back to mashing.

Good for Mariners baseball- that’s for certain. We’ve finally survived/outlasted the trade Haniger campaign and stand to benefit from Jerry’s patience and foresight.

Btw- can the fire Dipoto/ JD is the worst GM camp recognize that 3 of Dipoto’s young players will win silverware in 2020. Dipoto (and his coaching staff) should get recognition for 2 Gold Gloves and a soon to be AL ROY award. Multiple Post season awards for M’s players are few and far between. In fact, the M’s become only the second team in MLB history (Red Sox) to have multiple Rookie winners.
