Phillies Acquire Jose Alvarado In Three-Team Trade With Rays, Dodgers

By Mark Polishuk | December 29, 2020 at 10:59pm CDT

The Rays, Phillies, and Dodgers are in combination on a three-team deal, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter links).  As part of the swap, left-hander Jose Alvarado will go from the Rays to the Phillies, and minor league first baseman Dillon Paulson and a player to be named later or cash considerations will go from the Dodgers to Tampa Bay.  The Phils announced that left-hander Garrett Cleavinger has been sent to Los Angeles to complete the Dodgers’ end of the trade.

Alvarado is the most well-known name involved, and the southpaw will join a Philadelphia bullpen that posted dire numbers in 2020.  At his best during four seasons in Tampa, Alvarado was a major weapon for the Rays, most notably during a 2018 season that saw him post a 2.39 ERA and 11.3 K/9 over 64 relief innings and 70 games.

Injuries limited Alvarado in both 2019 and 2020, however, as he managed only a 5.08 ERA, 1.58 K/BB rate and 39 innings.  While Alvarado still missed a lot of bats to the tune of a 12.0 K/9, a lack of control (7.6 BB/9) counter-acted those punchouts.  Shoulder inflammation limited Alvarado to only nine regular-season innings in 2020, but he was able to return for the ALCS and toss 1 2/3 scoreless innings to contribute to the Rays’ victory over the Astros.

Alvarado is still only 25 years old and is controllable for three seasons via the arbitration process, so the Phillies are hoping there’s plenty of upside left.  Beyond a general need for any sort of bullpen help, Philadelphia was also particularly short on left-handers, so Alvarado immediately becomes the club’s top southpaw option.  Alvarado has been just about equally good against left-handed (career .600 OPS) and right-handed (.622 OPS) batters during his four MLB seasons.

In moving Alvarado, the Rays open up a 40-man roster spot that was needed for the completion of the Blake Snell trade with the Padres, so that deal could be officially announced soon.  There is also a financial element to the swap from Tampa Bay’s end, as Alvarado was projected to earn roughly $1.05MM in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

Cleavinger made his MLB debut in 2020, tossing two-thirds of an inning in a single appearances for Philadelphia.  A third-round pick for the Orioles in the 2015 draft, Cleavinger was dealt to the Phillies as part of the Jeremy Hellickson trade in July 2017.  Working exclusively as a reliever throughout his pro career, Cleavinger has a 4.08 ERA, 2.26 K/BB rate, and 12.0 K/9 over 220 1/3 innings in the Baltimore and Philadelphia farm system, though he has never pitched at the Triple-A level.

Paulson was a 13th-round pick for the Dodgers in the 2018 draft, and the USC product has hit .253/.373/.464 over 778 plate appearances during his brief pro career, reaching the high-A level in 2019.

@Steve Nebraska He’s a Padre fan. A bit sensitive for decades of underperformance so not sure if he understood that the previous poster was joking. Padres going all-in. As they should and need to. Will certainly be interesting how the Dodgers respond. Dodgers tend to play things for the long-run so not sure if Friedman does anything to completely jeopardize the future. They have contracts clearing but need to balance it with paying the young guys. Can they pay Bellinger, Seager, and Buehler with Betts there already and still sign some big-time free agents?

The Dodgers, like the Yankees, can spend whatever they want. It all depends on if they are willing to pay the luxury tax along with the competitive balance money. The Yankees didn’t win the WS in the last decade so the pressure is on Cashman and Boone . The Yankees should be all in on Bauer, but it doesn’t seem they are interested. They definitely could use Realmuto when you consider how bad Sanchez is. The Dodgers got a taste of winning now they will do whatever it takes to keep winning. I will be surprised if the Dodgers don’t offer Bauer big money on a two or three year deal. They can pay all their stars and still pay for a needed piece. A big plus for the Dodgers is their loaded system that seems to pump out MLB ready players annually.

The Dodgers have no need for Bauer. If they make a big move, it will be trading for Castillo. Yes, I realize they can get Bauer for “just money” while Castillo will cost prospects, but the salary Bauer wants makes signing him would adversely the payroll. Plus, Castillo is just a more desirable pitcher. Buehler, Kershaw, Castillo, Urias, May (the latter wouldn’t be in the trade). You wouldn’t find a better 202`1 rotation than that.

@trout27: Pretty shallow comment. While the Dodgers do have the financial resources they have been quite fiscally responsible under Friedman. Betts was Friedman’s first over $100mm contract since he’s headed the Dodgers. In general, he prefers to build his roster within the organization or picking off the scraps from other organizations. Not the big free agency acquisitions. He doesn’t like to just hand over large contracts like previous Dodger GMs. The Yankees can attest that spending money doesn’t just get you championships. You have to be smart how you spend it. They only get Bauer if it’s a short-term deal. It would not surprise me if they are not able to keep only two of Seager, Belllinger and Buehler. We’ll see.

The Padres have one of the biggest tv deals in the game. Stop pretending SD isn’t a big market, because their owners have previously been cheap. Time to start looping them in your narratives

3 years in a row they’ve given out 100M+ in contracts or made expensive win now trades.

Yeah, trading minor leaguers definitely beats a team acquiring two cy young caliber pitchers and signing a top international free agent without detracting from the ML roster and giving up 1 top 100 prospect while keeping their farm system in tact that can be replenished via the draft and IFA spending the next couple years.

What you said using your other account: Darvish would net more than Snell

          What I said:
Padres, nor any team, are interested in:
          1. giving up top prospects (they gave up prospects outside top 5)
          2. taking on 60 million when teams are slashing financial commitments (sent Davies back to offset salary for 2020)
          3. taking a gamble on Darvish at his current price. (reduced his price by as much as 10 mill (davies) and cubs chipped in some money)
          For a pitcher that
          1. is 34
          2. his 2 most recent seasons he was injured and pitched like a #3. (not bad just not worth the price)

What your small brain cell count interpreted that as:
          YoU sAiD DaRvIsH bAd.

Just because you keep saying it doesn’t make it true.

          I also said:

Darvishs most comparable pitcher is Lance Lynn
Lynn career FIP 3.62 at 34 years old
Darvish career FIP 3.43 at 34 years old.

Lynn, coming off a meh 2018 and good 2019, netted a top 100 prospect in Dane Dunning (#98) with a 1 year 8 mill contract and another pitcher whos projected to be a relief pitcher who should climb the system fast.

Darvish, coming off an injury riddled 2018 and ok 2019, wasn’t going to cost more prospects than Snell or better prospects than Lynn with an AAV of 20+ mill.

I did say if cubs knock down the price on Darvish similar to Lynn’s (AAV of 8 mill) they could net a top 100 prospect and other assets.

But please continue your tiresome narrative that I said Darvish was bad.

Not being worth an AAV of 20 mill =/= Darvish being a bad pitcher.

“They didnt subtract from the big league roster”

Darvish replaces Davies in the rotation. Or Snell replaces Davies in the rotation.

Either way they filled the hole they created by swapping pitchers.

But you knew that and decided to be obtuse anyways. Really reaching for straws trying to discredit what I say. Its cute. Sad, very sad, but cute.

Why would “we” hope that? He’s a lefty reliever who, if he makes the team, would have to be out some really good pitchers. Andrew Friedman made the deal and is the best FO exec in the game.

Oh yeah sure, he hasn’t ever come up with any worthless relievers who were put on the roster anyway. You might hope Cleavinger doesn’t make it to the big team too if you looked at his stats. He’s as wild as an Alaska salmon. I’m waiting on some meaningful bullpen signings. You probably noticed the Padres are making a couple of moves.

Do you follow how teams are run even a little? These types of organizational depth moves are made all the time.

Btw, Friedman is doing just fine with his pitching acquisitions. The Dodgers have led the National League in ERA the last four years. They have gone to the World Series in three of those years with a regular-season winning percentage of .631. The equates to averaging 102 wins per season. They also have a young, talented roster that includes superstars in their prime. Since talented young players tend to improve it’s a good guess that the Dodgers will be even better in 2021.

Oh, and for right now, I will take Urias and May over Darvish and Snell. The Dodgers also have a couple of other stud starters named Buehler and Kershaw. Where is this Padres edge in pitching?

People like you are hilarious with your whining. In the history of the franchise, this is the best time ever to be a Dodgers fan. For eight years, every game has been meaningful and they are just getting started. Ownership. Front office. Player development. Scouting. Drafting. Manager and coaches. This is the best they have been in all of those areas, and they are really just getting started. You should be grateful for this recent and continuing run of success, not critical of it. There is not a single weak area up and down the ladder.

It always saddens me when someone doesn’t seem to want to have a civil conversation.

This is an essentially meaningless transaction. That’s my point. It is not undiscovered gold just because Friedman is involved with it. I hope I don’t have to come up with a list of similar signings and trades for mediocre (or worse) relievers who ended up on the roster just the same. Last season was different, and did that not make a difference? More of that, please.

The other point about the Padres is they are making moves that will position them as serious challengers in the division. They were pretty darned close last year and this year they figure to get a lot better. Do you seriously believe that isn’t true? Do you seriously believe that the Dodgers don’t have any work to do if they are going to defend their championship?

If you get 2-3 of these types of guys and one hits you hit the jackpot if not you invested very little. Let’s wait and see what Friedman does before we jump off the ledge. As structured right now I still see us winning the division. San Diego has won the off season before but has little to show for it.

Not sure if I’d take Urias and May over Snell and Darvish if we are talking about 2021 season, not just upside. Those are two very good pitchers. May has some growing to do. He has great stuff but hasn’t harnessed that. For the filth that he throws he should be getting more swing and misses. If he can locate better he can cut down on walks and get more swing and misses. Needs to take that next step. Is it in 2021? I hope so. Urias took a big step in the 2020 playoffs. He needs to get more consistent though. We all know that he has electric stuff.

Padres have made very good moves from a win now mode perspective and certainly expect them to challenge the Dodgers for the NL West and NL. We’ll see what the Dodgers do. I don’t think that they need to panic and take on bad contracts. But it wouldn’t surprise me if they do make a bigger splash signing or trade based on what’s transpired in the last 24-48 hours. Is that Bauer or LeMahieu? Or maybe they hold off until the trade deadline.

Do you really think the 2020 Padres did not overachieve? Like, half their offense? Do you really think Clevinger’s loss doesn’t negate at least one of their big trades?

Do you really think they have a bullpen that’s championship caliber? The dodgers won at a 116 win pace, and are adding David Price for free. There’s 2 months to go in the offseason.

          No. I’m not worried

History says Machado, Hosmer, Myers& Profar all exceeded their expected outputs. And how far back were they still? Of course they got better on paper the last 2 days. But that doesn’t negate how big the gap was originally and how talented LAD remains

The Padres are hoping 2018 Snell and 2020 Darvish are that guy, for the next 3 years. Yea I ll take the 24 year olds in the “who’s more likely to be as good or better than the Past” poll

You were the same guy with these tired speeches over and over that said they WOULD’NT trade for Mookie bc we were so good yada yada and that wasnt needed or AF’s Mo to trade from the farm – Then you took a little planned vacay from this site when it all went down 😉

Alvarado just doubled his salary in arbitration and it will only go up in the next two years. Might as well get a intriguing hitter which will cost you nothing especially when you have the ability to pop out high leverage relievers with ease.

The Snell deal was because his contract was backloaded so they could do exactly what they did. The Rays are frugal but you can’t say too much about it since they manage to be in the playoffs more often than not.

Because they can. Low risk lotto ticket, it would seem. Or maybe they see something they can work with.

One of the biggest aspects of the Dodgers’ success is player development. Their prospects pan out, and yet they also develop useful pieces out of undervalued or underperforming players. With their depth, they don’t need this arm to develop, but they’ll give it a try.

Re player development, one thing the Dodgers do differently is treating every player as a Major League prospect. When they draft or acquire someone, they already have a plan in mind for that player. Obviously, these players won’t all pan out, but this gives them a higher batting average than other organizations. Remarkable when you consider they draft near the bottom of every round, year after year. You can bet they are handling PD during this pandemic winter differently than other teams. The Rays are similar, though without the same financial resources. That’s a small-market principal Friedman brought to L.A. Develop your own.

It’s such an under appreciated part of the game for many many teams imo. It was for LA ore Friedman more than not too

They always had a slew of 10NRI or whatever that I’d get excited about for no reason. But Friedman takes that to the next stratosphere

Idk why but I got a feeling Tampa is up to something big, but maybe not. But they’ve traded away snell, lost Morton and a pretty damn good LH reliever when healthy. Probably a few more moves that I can’t think of at the moment. Leaves them with Glasgow and Chirinos as the 1-2, I wonder if they’ll use Lowe or Meadows or somebody like that who’s gonna have to get paid eventually as bait, or maybe adames? Idk what his trade value is either but they have the #1 ranked prospect coming up as well that plays adames position. And point being they haven’t really shipped out anyone on offense yet. They don’t like to reward players with big contracts and if they do that player ain’t gonna last that contract they’ll be shipped too (snell). But I dont know who they’ll go after maybe Castillo from cin? Anyhow stoves heating up finally yay.

Obviously Dombrowski saw enough of Alvarado to perk up when his name was mentioned. As Plesac just said, for 2 months in 2019 Alvarado was the best reliever in MLB; no doubt.

But he spends a lot of time on the IL, and had to leave the team for a while to deal with “personal issues”. Use your informed imagination to theorize what those two factors equal to.

That said, he’s a good pickup; relievers are consistently inconsistent. And neither of the other players involved seem to represent much, tho Paulson looks like he might be interesting. And the Rays don’t have any 1B prospects; I suspect they’ll take the cash to complete the deal.

This is a win win for the Phillies. They cleared 68m from last years payroll. They have a fair amount of holes to fill. Bullpen is there biggest need, and landing a 25yr old lefty with high velocity and 3 yrs of team control is a great start. They still need a closer and another reliable BP arm, 1-SP, SS or 2B, CF (Bradley JR., apparently Dombrowski likes him a lot), resign JT. If we can fill these needs, with solid players, we can compete for the NL East.

Rays really need to relocate or build the park closer to the city and get fans to finally show up. Rays have a chance to be in a similar market to Braves, Cardinals, etc. but the where the stadium sits, is holding that club back.

Good move by my Phillies. Alvarado doesn’t even turn 26 until May, 2021. He was the Rays closer at the start of 2019 and then got hurt. Probably not over the injuries just yet, as 2020 was a down year. Phillies bullpen was so bad last year that almost reliever who can fog a mirror with one breath will be an upgrade.

Still hoping Cigar Guy gives Sam Fuld the go-ahead to sign a couple of FAs. Okay, I know we ain’t getting Bauer or Springer, but there are lesser-lights available who can play well enough to help.

Finally, as 2021 quickly approaches, I’m becoming less and less confident that the Phillies will re-sign JT Realmuto. Have no inside info, but I think the Blue Jays want him and will spend what it takes to get him.

I hope you’re wrong. Not that I don’t like Realmuto, I just don’t think that’s where the Jays focus should be with their money. I do hope the Phillies lock up Realmuto.

From 2018 till now Alvarado’s star certainly plummetted.
