Yankees To Sign Tyler Lyons

By Anthony Franco | January 10, 2021 at 9:37am CDT

The Yankees have re-signed Tyler Lyons to a minor-league contract, per the MLB.com transactions page. The veteran southpaw pitched in one game for New York last season.

Lyons has bounced on and off the Yankees’ roster a few times since he first signed with New York in August 2019. The 32-year-old has tallied 10.2 relief innings across twelve appearances in pinstripes, allowing eight earned runs. Lyons hasn’t found much success over the past three years with any of the Cardinals, Pirates or Yankees. He did, however, have a few productive seasons in St. Louis early in his career.

In spite of Lyons’ recent history, there’s no harm in bringing back a familiar player on a minor-league pact to bolster organizational depth. Aside from closer Aroldis Chapman, Zack Britton is the only lefty reliever on the Yankees’ 40-man roster.

We will see when they play the field. Mets are overhyped and have fallen several times after being overhyped. I dont think they’re any better than last year at the moment, maybe slightly. I bet Marlins outperform them.

Really? I mean I know you’re reacting to what OP said but I’m pretty sure you can still think the Yankees are better without saying something that at least right now, just doesn’t look factual. How can you explain the Mets are no better than last year after trading for Lindor and Corrasco? You are intentionally being disenguine.

Actually—- Tyler Lyons was a great contributor and viewed as a future starter for the Cardinals. That is —- until Tony LaRussa began using him daily as a reliever—- Lyons, because of over use, injured his arm.

Hopefully he’ll regain his old form and help the Yankees from the left side of the mound.

I remember a few years ago when the Mets had that great rotation and it was declared that NY was a Mets town. That didn’t age well. Maybe they can have a sustainable winning organization but they should at least play a game or two first.

Yankees are making a major statement, imho. I think teams are taking this LTT seriously across the board and it will definitively impact salaries, thereby creating advantages for early extensions, ala Tatis Jr. & co. With MLBPA and current salaries, they’re not going to continue paying additional penalty money on top of regular money so “small-market” teams can reap financial benefits.

Mets fans believe that Cohen’s 14.3 billion dollars will directly translate to money spent. They’re wrong. He didn’t become a multibillionaire by spending money he didn’t have to. He will not abdicate any sense of his budget and fly past the LTT tiers so he can purchase talent.

Ignorant opponents argue Yankees shouldn’t be able to get the top free agents every winter, but that’s not going to happen, because other teams have just as much or more capital to compete with offers, and Yankees simply cannot survive in business handling their budget that recklessly.

Mets should worry about the Braves, Nats, Phillies and possibly the Marlins before they worry about the Yankees. I don’t like that the Yankees are shopping from the Clearance rack but it is what it is. I do wish Yankees offered Voit, Andujar, Florial, Estrada, and two pitchers for Lindor but oh well. Much better than the Mets package. They have a one track mind right now for DJ and only DJ.

Very doubtful Lindor was ever going to the Yankees. Cleveland would much rather send Lindor to the NL. I think Story has always been a more viable option. The Yankees have a history of dealing with Colorado.

While they can definitely use a lefty bat, their right handers hit right handed pitching very well. I still expect DJLM to end up in pinstripes. If he had better offers, he’d have signed by now. No need for the Yankees to bid against themselves. They have made that mistake in the past See: Rodriguez, Alex

@mlbnyyfan- I never wanted to lose Didi either. I wouldn’t mind having him back playing shortstop. And I miss his left-handed power bat also. The Rockies will want a Fortune back for Story. I don’t see a fit.

Yanks should just move on from DJ.
Good player for sure. But I don’t recall him receiving the World Series MVP.
          Ya know?

His defense is regressing, his foot speed is slowing, he was on the IL last summer, second basemen have a history of sudden & rapid decline.
          For 20+ mil AAV?

          Nah.
With that money you could sign Wong, Melancon, Rosenthal, & Perez. Yanks would still have an elite offense. Defense, base running, & line up balance would all improve. We’d also (on paper at least) have a pen that could actually be better than the 2017-19 versions which were excellent.

But the Yankees desperately need a speedy lead off hitter, right @mlbnyyfan?

        Moi?
        I’d’ve gotten the deal *done*:
Dominguez, Judge, Gleyber, Frazier, Wade, Garcia, Schmidt, & Rambo Matsoball for Lindor.

Bet that would have landed him.

      @Clipper (happy New year, btw)

The main thing is we’ve almost three months until opening day. I know Yankee fans aren’t exactly known for their patience.
But this year – especially so – you gotta give it some time. There are *still* over 40 of the top 50 free agents left.

Let’s see what the roster looks like on April fool’s day.

Another who cares signing by a GM who can’t seem win on such a tight budget of 230 plus mil a year and now perhaps 210.

The teams need legit proven high end SP behind Cole, a defensive SS and possibly some lefty contacts bats. Clearly to accomplish this one would need to be creative.

Instead we are getting nothing but blaming Stanton and signing minor leaguers… so who convinced Hal to acquire Stanton?!!

We need Theo or a GM not afraid to make moves and change. #firecashman

It’s crazy how the Yankees keep adding these marginal LH relievers, man. Just go ahead, Cash. Sign McGee, or Watson, or Perez, etc & be done with it.
    Ya know?

Cash seems to desperately want another lefty out there. So spend a few mil on one, uh? If they’re going to insist on carrying one…well, why not have one who is going to be able to actually help.

I’ve seen enough of Tyler Lyons to realize he’s not going to be the answer there.

@Ducky yes of course I wanted Lindor to be the Yankees lead off hitter. It’s funny how the Mets gave up garbage but the Indians would be demanding much more from the Yankees. The last two off seasons both the Dodgers and Mets kept the prime prospects for a super star player. Why is that?

In all fairness the yanks gave up nada for Stanton who was coming off an epic year at the time and was 27. Yes we got back 30 mil but over 9 years or so. The Mets still have to pay lindor who will get a deal similar to staton. Yes lindor plays D too but all in all we gave up nothing

The thing is we didn’t have a comparable package to offer. Ya know? I don’t see the Indians being very interested in Tyler Wade & Thairo Estrada.

Cleveland wanted infielders to replace Lindor & Hernandez. Yanks couldn’t match that. I guess they could have offered Gleyber?

But I can’t see Cashman doing that. I wouldn’t either. Look Lindor & Carrasco are both good players. (Actually, I’d’ve been more interested in Cash getting us a Cookie than Lindor, personally.)

Either way, we didn’t match up with want they were looking to get. This year’s trade & free agent market is much more of a floor raising than a ceiling raising one.

The bullpen market is teeming with above average to elite arms. There are more 2-3 WAR infielders than teams that have needs there.

Why not take advantage of what’s there?
Add 2-3 relievers. Replace DJ with a competent (perhaps not overly exciting) player. Upgrade the bench, too. That can all be done for 20-25 mil. Ya know?

Plug the hole at the keystone. Get a serviceable utility guy who can actually contribute. I’m sick of watching Tyler Wade. He’s just not very good, man. Turn the pen back into a feared weapon. At least we’d be improving on last year’s squad.

*Then* figure out the starting staff. Don’t chase stars this year. Take advantage of what’s there, man.

        Ya know?

Are you really going to compare Rosario to Gleyber? Mets gave up nothing plain and simple. The Yankees could of possibly offered Voit especially with DJ playing first base. The Yankees have a one track mind waiting for DJ to make a decision.

How am I comparing Gleyber with Rosario?

I guess in the sense that he would be the only infielder that would have piqued Cleveland’s interest I am. But as I posted neither Cashman nor myself would ever do that.
          Slow down.
          Read more carefully, bro.

Anyway *that* would have been the cost. So…you good with that?

This isn’t MLB the show, man. You can’t force trades. Why would Cleveland want Voit? They wanted – once again – YOUNG MLB READY INFIELDERS. The Mets had two. Besides Gleyber we had zero.

& trust me on this. *No* team is going to sign DJ to play first base. I have no idea how you guys keep coming back to that. It’s so completely unrealistic, man. Again, that’s some video game stuff, man. Not real MLB.

Lindor is on the Mets because they matched up way better (barring an absurd overpay in the interest of acquiring the “speedy lead off hitter” you so covet) than the Yanks did.
          The End.

Talk about one track minds, man. Lindor & DJ was never, ever going to happen. Like it or not, the Yankees have a budget.

          Ya know?
