Cubs Designate Sergio Alcantara For Assignment

By Steve Adams | February 18, 2021 at 9:10am CDT

The Cubs announced this morning that infielder Sergio Alcantara has been designated for assignment. He’d been claimed off waivers from the Tigers earlier in the month, but his roster spot will now go to righty Brandon Workman, whose previously reported one-year deal is now official.

The 24-year-old Alcantara made his MLB debut with Detroit in 2020 and had three hits, including a homer, in 23 plate appearances. The long ball was surprising, as Alcantara has shown virtually no power in seven minor league seasons (nine home runs in 2611 plate appearances).

Lack of pop notwithstanding, Alcantara is regarded as a slick-fielding option at shortstop and can handle second and third base as well. He’s yet to play in Triple-A, thanks to the lack of a minor league season in 2020, but is a .261/.340/.317 hitter in parts of two Double-A campaigns.

The Cubs now have a week to trade Alcantara, attempt to pass him through outright waivers or release him. Alcantara is out of minor league options, so any team that claims him will either need to carry him on its Opening Day roster as a glove-first utility option or again designate him for assignment.

I wonder how he’s already out of options and he’s only 24 and he’s only spent one season in the majors

      He originally signed at 16.

He been in the minors since 2013 soo what 7 years that prob explains it…
He will take a minor league contract from someone unless a team claims him for a bench role..

I’m assuming it’s because he has 7 years of minor league service. It says if he was on the 40-man roster and wasn’t added to the 25/26 man active roster, he would have to be optioned down. So maybe that’s why?

I’m guessing he was added to the 40-man for rule 5 protection. Looks like he signed at age 16 so I believe he was rule 5 eligible by age 21.

If you’re on the 40-man roster but don’t make the Opening Day roster, you have to be optioned to the minors. You could be out of options without having a single day of Major League service time.

A mistake for anyone to claim him. All glove, no stick. He might eventually develop into a passable back up IF. But no one should waste a 40 man spot on him. Sign him to a minor league deal and see if he can work his way back.

That’s all he appears to be, minor league depth who might develop into a backup infielder. These guys are a dime a dozen. Just like relievers who throw 97 but are prone to walks. They are complete lottery tickets best signed to minors contracts rather than clogging up the 40 man.

Except no MLB team has been able to sign him to one since he signed as a pro.

Every back up IF in the majors is on the 40 man roster. It just how it works.

“Slick fielding middle-infielder” is all the Brewers needed to hear. Sure they’re on the phone already.

you can just say “middle infeilder” and the Brewers would be all over it.

I am hoping the Orioles sign him to a contract. His defense will be a lot better than Galvis would not be missing anything with the bat.

where did you get the idea that Galvis wasnt a good defender and that Alcantara could hit his weight?

I am not saying Galvis is not a good defender. I am saying Sergio is just as good, younger, and more versatile. He would sign for a lot less which in return the money can be spent on more pitchers than Harvey and Leblanc. The batting between Galvis and Sergio are about the same.

Galvis a good hitter. Doesn’t walk much but he can hit. Can steal a base and provide some XBH. Freddie a good ballplayer.

Rays, Marlins or the Rangers will pick him up. Good signing for all 3.
