Giants To Sign Zack Littell

By Jeff Todd | February 3, 2021 at 9:14pm CDT

The Giants have inked reliever Zack Littell to a minor-league pact, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). He’ll receive an invitation to participate in MLB camp this spring.

Littell, 25, has thrown 63 2/3 total innings over the past three seasons, recording a cumulative 4.52 ERA. He has a pedestrian 49:23 K/BB ratio in that span.

It’ll be interesting to see if Littell can regain his footing with a new organization. He produced quite promising results in 2019, but lost his roster spot with the Twins last year after five of the 31 batters he faced went deep.

5 out of 31 batters going deep was an average start for Matt Harvey.

It wasn’t in the post, but Littell gave up 5 HR in 2020. He faced 34 batters (3 walks).

It’s time for the Giants to sign some veteran bullpen help. Right now the clostest thing to a veteran on the 40 man roster is Wandy Peralta. That won’t do. I was hoping for Alex Colome or Joakim Soria. Now maybe Melancon, Petit, Clippard, Robertson, Peacock, McGee or any of about 10 other savvy veterans. The Giants also need at least 2 more veteran starters maybe one on a major league contract (Odorizzi, Paxton, Porcello, Hamels) and one or more minor league signings (Leake, Gio, Zimmerman, Cahill etc..). Of course Rosenthal is the biggest reliever out there but I don’t know if a handful of dominant games in the last 3 years warrants a multi year commitment.

I dunno… they aren’t going to win the division this year and the front office knows it, so why spend a lot of money this season, especially for something as transient as bullpen help? I hope they’re entertaining, win more than they lose, and give me something to watch on TV that’s better than the usual network or cable crap.

Every club signs players like this Littell guy just before spring training. It’s a chance for a marginal player to prove himself with very little risk to the big league club.

If he pans out, great. The Giants gain a cheap bullpen piece. If not, he will just be sent down or DFA’d.

      To what end?

The Giants are going to have somewhere around a $150M payroll this year and field a team that is very likely at-or-below average. Roughly $80M of that comes off the books after this season; their entire plan should be about 2022 and beyond.

I’d like to see them get a decent veteran arm for the pen – doesn’t have to be a closer – but someone who can come in a sticky situation and get through an inning.

I’m sure after the 2021 season they will focus on it more. They are going to have $80+ million off the books. Like kids in a candy store….

      Nice.
You’d have thought all that losing would have just naturally produced some humility in SD fans.
A promising team for the upcoming season still doesn’t give SD a championship this…oh right, EVER

Hey, don’t hate on the Padres. They have a nice young team and outside Machado likeable players. This guy isn’t even a Padres fan, just an obsessed Dodgers fan that pretends to be a fan of other teams.

TonyGwynn19 is a band wagon fan, only follows his club when their relevant. He obviously doesn’t pay much attention to all the decades of under .500 last place finishes his club has produced up to the shortened season. Coo coo
