The Marlins announced Wednesday that they’ve designated outfielder Harold Ramirez for assignment. His spot on the roster will go to right-hander John Curtiss, whose previously reported acquisition from the Rays is now official. Miami also formally announced its one-year deal with outfielder Adam Duvall today, placing righty Jeff Brigham to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.
Ramirez, 26, made his Major League debut with the Marlins in May 2019 and came out of the gates on fire, batting .368/.419/.474 in his first month of action. His bat cooled after the fact, but that early hot streak was enough to leave him with a respectable .276/.312/.416 batting line through 446 plate appearances as a rookie.
The 2020 season was another story entirely, however, as Ramirez was among the many Marlins players to test positive for Covid-19 early in the year when the team was hit with an outbreak of the virus. He returned in early September but sustained an immediate hamstring injury that resulted in him being carted off the field. Ramirez didn’t make it back to the active roster following that injury and finished out his 2020 season with just three games and 11 plate appearances.
That was obviously a disappointing outcome for a player who likely hoped to have cemented himself on the big league roster with a decent rookie showing, and today’s DFA is a further downturn in trajectory. The Marlins will have a week to trade Ramirez or pass him through outright waivers. SportsGrid’s Craig Mish tweets that Miami has been attempting to move him “to no avail,” though with the DFA clock now ticking, it’s possible those talks could be accelerated.
Ramirez does have a minor league option remaining, and in addition to a respectable output at the plate in 2019, he carries a career .303/.358/.421 slash in parts of eight minor league seasons. He’s still appeared in only 31 games at the Triple-A level, but Ramirez has been productive both there and in Double-A. He’s best deployed in an outfield corner, but the Fish gave him 192 innings of center field work in 2019, so he can at least handle the position. Teams in search of a right-handed, corner outfield bat could certainly have interest in swinging a minor deal for Ramirez, who can be controlled through at least the 2025 season.
Ully
Solid, not spectacular 2019 season and then what happened to him last year?
andrewgauldin
He was injured.
KG25Baseball
Really Marlins!!? He’s a great contact hitter with a high upside. He’s been hurt but he could’ve been solid
bobbyvwannabe
Totally wouldn’t mind NY Mets going after him for more OF depth. I was impressed watching him hit in 2019.
Far Beyond Driven
He’d be our 7th outfielder behind Jose Martinez
MetsFan22
Could you believe that MarlinsFanBase thinks he is better than Nimmo? Lol
Mrtwotone
*grabs popcorn to watch the fight between MFB and Metsfan22.
MarlinsFanBase
He is better than Nimmo. Ramirez can actually hit his way onto base and can actually run the bases.
andremets
I suspect this comment wasn’t even the dumbest post MFB have ever made. Now I hope the Mets claim Ramirez and stash him at AAA so I can literally laugh at how a Miami “starter” is now a Mets’ AAA reserve.
MarlinsFanBase
And we can laugh at your last place finish despite all the hype.
How about this for a laugh…1986!
MarlinsFanBase
But I do want to know from you Mets fans, besides keeping the bat glued to his shoulder, what does Brandon Nimmo do?
He sucks on the bases. He sucks on defense. He is mediocre at best when he actually swings the bat.
So, please explain what does he do? What makes a player good when he sucks at most things and his one skill is what the worst hitter on Little League teams do – don’t swing?
stymeedone
Is Jose Martinez really an OF?
jim stem
He’d be a good AAA stash for the Mets, but I have to believe he could secure a major league contract with a weaker or rebuilding team. He’s provide a good compliment to a player like Schwarber.
buccosfan :(
I could see the Pirates putting in a claim here. They are looking for some outfield competition and he could get a shot at some real playing time.
ElGaupo77
I thought so too but Alford has a little more upside with similar positions, unless he goes to Aaa.
Mendoza Line 215
I think that they will give Alford an honest to goodness chance to play and see what he has.He looked pretty good last year.Hopefully, his injury will not set him back.
stan lee the manly
This seems like a quality target for St. Louis with their question mark on LF. More competition for spring training
Luc 2
He needs to go to a team like the Pirates, Tigers, or some other bad team.
andrewgauldin
I understand the move, Duvall coming in, too many outfielders on the roster even before Duvall. However, he was one of the guys I was hoping would get 400-500 plate appearances this season.
fathead0507
Rangers need a RH OF I imagine
stretch123
I think Sierra should have been DFA… Out of options, zero power. HRam could’ve been a solid No 4 outfielder for years to come but Fish do have younger, more high upside guys.
andrewgauldin
Sierra is a nice 5th OF. Lots of speed, can play CF, could probably platoon with Duvall in RF.
Marlins had a winning record when he was in the lineup last season, and slumped when he was injured.
Although I do think Harold has the higher upside, and should have been given the role that Duvall now has.
stretch123
Valid points however, I do think outfielders with speed are more so needed for postseason teams and they are much easier to find in September when rosters expand. A team like the Marlins cannot afford to trade away players with upside. Ramirez to me smells like a Pirates acquisition, and will end up hitting 20-25 homers annually. But we’ll see. I do love Sierra as a player too. If only he could add some gap power (doubles, triples).
andrewgauldin
I do agree. I’m not a fan of this move, and I’m not a fan of the Duvall signing because that ultimately led to this move. Whether it be the pirates or whoever, I think he will do quite well.
jigokusabre0
Lewis Brinson is literally the worst hitting OF in the history of baseball.
elscorchot
You know the definition of “literally”, right?
jigokusabre0
Yes.
Lewis Brinson is “literally” the worst hitting OF in the history of baseball.
jigokusabre0
Yes.
Lewis Brinson is *literally* the worst. Lit. Er. Ally.

MarlinsFanBase
How is it that Brinson stays and Ramirez is gone?
When you see a move like this, you have to question what’s been going on behind the scenes because we all are questioning this move. And we’re not the first rebuilding team to move on from Ramirez. That doesn’t ever look right for a player. I really want to know what comes out as the reason behind this move.
ludafish
Brinson has a club option left. For 3 weeks in September he looked very good and went back to being awful. With the option they can hide him in the minors again hoping he can become at least serviceable.
Ramirez can’t stay healthy and I believe can’t be sent down. He has to accept assignment.
jigokusabre0
Ramirez does have a minor league, per the article.
Rangers29
Isn’t this the guy that Marlinsfan said was better than Brandon Nimmo whenever him and Metsfan22 would get at it?
DarkSide830
does have more upside imo
MetsFan22
Lol what??? Lol
MetsFan22
Yes he did.
MarlinsFanBase
Yes, and I still say he’s better than Nimmo.
if Nimmo was a Marlin, this shows that Nimmo would be cut loose today.
ludafish
Nimmo is elite at getting on base. He’s not good in a lot of other things. But he has shown very very above average OBP skills leading to OPS+ of 140. So no he isn’t better than Nimmo. Nimmo is over rated and can’t do anything clutch. Ramirez may have a higher ceiling. But in the end right now Nimmo is better. Sorry friend, you friend you know I’m a Marlins fan and Mets hater but let’s be real for a moment.
goalieguy41
Could never figure out why the Jays let this guy walk
jim stem
He’s a good contact guy that can run a little. He should be snapped up by any team looking for a solid 4th outfield type.
stymeedone
Tigers could pick him up so Avila has another young OF to waive.
Orioles Fan
The Orioles need a backup OF. This would be a great pickup
User 3044878754
He might be better than all the Indian OFs except Eddie Rosario
UKPhil
I hope Harold slides all the way past waivers to the Marlins minor league system, because I do believe he’s capable of having a pretty decent major league career. Fingers crossed.
MarlinsFanBase
I would be surprised if that happened. I really don’t understand this. I think most Marlins fans don’t understand this. But then again, we were wondering why did the Blue Jays let us grab him up after we saw him in Spring Training.
There’s got to be something behind the scenes. It’s odd to give up a young player that has shown some good performance and potential. Now this is twice with two different teams that have been rebuilding. And the Marlins were already actively trying to trade him? What’s going on?
Mendoza Line 215
He was also given away by the Pirates in the Liriano deal in 2016.He has little power and reminded them too much of Jose Tabata and Lastings Milledge, outfielders who could hit .280 and were decent runners and fielders, but did not have particularly good arms and had little or no power.
MarlinsFanBase
Yeah, that’s right. He was with the Pirates. So, something seems up with Ramirez. I’m curious to know what was behind this.
Here’s another kicker in this. We are moving Ramirez, but keeping Brinson?
jigokusabre0
Because Brinson is the centerpiece in the worst trade in Marlins history (yes, even counting the Cabrerea fiasco).
Gotta keep floating that sunk cost.
MarlinsFanBase
I hope it’s not due to hoping that Brinson saves the Yelich trade. If he doesn’t show something, and Ramirez goes elsewhere to become a solid player for a number of years, that just make that trade sting even more. Brinson lost his job to Ramirez.
Personally, I think there’s something behind the scenes that we haven’t heard of yet.
ludafish
If Monte Harrison can strike out less then the Yelich trade is a wash. At the time of the trade MIL fans were infuriated about what they gave up. Hindsight is 20 20. Yelich never looked that good before. Brinson shows flashes of elite talent for 8 games then dies in a fire. Since he has an option left they maintain hope. But this new regime isn’t afraid to fail and let go. So after this season if Monte and Lewis don’t work out bye bye oh well.
jigokusabre0
Brinson is the worst hitting OF in baseball history. Diaz, Harrison and Yamamoto are below replacement level, thus far, and Yam’s already gone. .
Yelich has had two MVP caliber seasons since leaving Miami. .
andremets
MFB probably thought Yamamoto had more upside than Syndergaard up until the moment he was traded to the Mets last week. Now he’s just a scrub.
ludafish
Nah the entire Miami fan base and organization lost hope with him at the end of 2019 and then for sure in 2020. He has about 4 45-50 grade pitches. Can not miss his spots or it’s over. He will spot start for the Mets occasionally and probably throw a couple gems. With a start or two in between of 6ER in less than 3 innings.
MarlinsFanBase
This is surprising. I’m wondering what happened.
andrewgauldin
Duvall happened
MarlinsFanBase
Even if due to Duvall, they still could have DFA’d Brinson whose older and lost his job to Ramirez.
Mjm117
Brinson still has an option
jigokusabre0
So does Ramirez.
Treehouse22
Would love to see the Bucs pick him up. He’s only 26 and just developing his power. He’s a solid 4th OF at the very least. I know the Bucs traded him in 2016, but he’s a much stronger player now.
sandman12
Clearly a trade for Ramirez is in the offing.
