Blue Jays Select Tommy Milone

By Anthony Franco | April 4, 2021 at 10:14am CDT

The Blue Jays announced they’ve selected the contract of left-hander Tommy Milone. Reliever Joel Payamps has been optioned to the alternate training site in a corresponding move. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Jays placed reliever Kirby Yates on the 60-day injured list. Yates will miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Toronto signed Milone to a minor league deal in February. The soft-tossing lefty started nine games between the Orioles and Braves in 2020, including getting the nod for Baltimore on Opening Day. After a decent start to the year with the O’s, Milone got knocked around in Atlanta. All told, he pitched to a 6.69 ERA/4.12 SIERA despite a career-best 22.1% strikeout rate (just worse than league average) and a stellar 3.3% walk rate.

Milone has never missed many bats or induced ground balls at an especially strong clip. However, the 34-year-old’s ability to throw strikes at an incredible rate has continued to get him MLB opportunities. When Milone takes the mound for the Jays, he’ll be suiting up for his ninth different team over the past eleven years.

When your pitching is sub standard you start looking around for reclamation projects. Throw it at the wall and see what sticks.

he was pretty good last year before he got injured. i wouldnt call him a reclamation as much as a stopgap.

Was this before or after 3 starts in a Braves uniform? Either answer makes your “before he got injured” wrong and ridiculous.

I agree he was terrible in Atlanta. But he was pretty serviceable in Baltimore. I know he is not the answer however you will need a lot of pitchers this season so it’s not that far fetched to bring him up and send back down.

he was at the very least injured during the last one and even if he wasnt during the others, the 1st Braves start was the only real downright terrible start he had last year.

Hoffman was traded along with prospect Case William to the reds in exchange for Jameson Hannah and Robert Stephenson

Is there a reason Yates isn’t just released?

they’re paying him regardless and he’s not taking up a roster spot. I think releasing him does nothing for the team and just serves to hurt his service time, ie slam dunk grievance material.

Jays missed the boat. Should have signed more depth during the off-season. Better options like Taijuan Walker, Odorizzi and Paxton (a Canadian born player at that) were all out there for an extended period. They passed. Now Tommy Milone might make some starts. Don’t think that will end well.

This is how a team with playoff aspirations gets derailed quickly, no rotation depth. He shouldn’t be anywhere near a MLB roster.

Whoa…all we heard from Jays fans and media was how deep the Jays SP was. They don’t have depth??

Exactly right HoleCamels the Jays don’t have the depth they peddled to the fan base. The bullpen can only hold it together for so long.

Yup herecom, I know what you mean. Doesn’t make sense except Payamps long-term is not an answer for anything. Payamps is a fringe major league player.

The question is, does Milone have anything left in the tank? He’ll get killed if he starts[baring a miracle or vitamin injections] but as middle relief he might be okay to good.

He is probably just a victim because he has options & the Jay’s wanted a fresh arm. So I don’t think it has anything to do with his performance.

I agree. He threw “just fine”.

I doubt they plan to get him into a game and definitely no reason to start him.

I’m guessing he’s there to eat innings if the Jays fall way behind early. Just to save their other bullpen arms.
