West Notes: Rendon, Gonsolin, Moronta, Wade

By Anthony Franco and Mark Polishuk | April 11, 2021 at 10:24pm CDT

Anthony Rendon is dealing with a sore left groin, Angels manager Joe Maddon told reporters (including Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic and Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times). Maddon doesn’t expect Rendon to play in tomorrow evening’s game against the Royals, and it isn’t out of the question the star third baseman could require a stint on the injured list. The always-productive Rendon is off to a strong start to the 2021 season, with nine hits (including a home run) and five walks over his first 37 plate appearances.

More out of the game’s West divisions:

  • According to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Tony Gonsolin’s return is “a ways away for me with where he’s at.”  Roberts told Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register and other reporters that Gonsolin had yet to begin a throwing program since being placed on the 10-day injured list last Sunday.  Gonsolin is sidelined with shoulder inflammation that began to bother the right-hander around Opening Day, which was why he didn’t get any game action prior to his IL placement.
  • Before today’s game against the Rockies, the Giants placed reliever Reyes Moronta on the 10-day injured list with a right flexor strain, Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group was among those to note. While that sounds ominous, especially since Moronta missed the entire 2020 season recovering from shoulder surgery, manager Gabe Kapler said it’s a minor strain (via Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle). To replace the right-hander on the active roster, the Giants recalled LaMonte Wade Jr. Acquired from the Twins over the offseason, Wade went 2-4 with a walk in his Giants’ debut this afternoon.

Rendon has not had a strong start. His HR was yesterday in the 15-1 blowout and he’s been one of the least clutch players on the team so far this year.

Wow! In Rendon I trust. Well, this guy probably should of wrote “good start”, not great start, but let’s not nitpick bro. It’s been 9 days and it won’t be his, or anybody’s last worthless HR this season. All players have many of those throughout the year if your a 25+ homer guy.

I mean, he’s right though. Rendon has had 3 or 4 rbi chances with less then 2 outs this year and has struggled

He’s 1 for 10 with RISP, 4 for 21 with guys on and 5 for 10 with the bases empty. It’s early, but I’m just getting at he really didn’t look into how Rendon was doing. Just a casual look at overall counting stats. I’m a bitter angels fan who thinks he’s not worth half the money they spent on him, so I’m biased

As a Nats fan here is a quick note on Rendon. He always gets off to slow starts.

I guess that works when you’re the 3rd or 4th star on the team, but when you’re getting paid like a top player, that’s not acceptable. People act like he’s a top 5 player in baseball and he’s not even a top 3 3B

he was their best hitter in 2019 but okay “3rd or 4th star”

@jdodson, now you’re just hating on Rendon. The last full season of baseball, Rendon was the best 3b in the game. Rank him how u may, but he’s definitely a top three 3b in the game.

        • YankeesBleacherCreature

Lol. He’s hitting .290/.378 in his “weak” start. The power isn’t there yet. Is there something that you don’t complain about?

        • Luc (Soto 3rd best in the game)

It’s fine because it doesn’t last long. And your delusional he is the #1 3B or at least top 3

        • jdodson1822

You mean 2019? Bregman, Chapman and Ramirez were better and that just in the AL. Arenado has almost always been better and Donaldson/Turner have been better at times as well

        • tad2b13

          jdodson1822:

Wow, you state something like it’s a fact, when it’s not close to being true. Did you think no one would actually look at the stats?

Bregman had a slightly better 2019 than Rendon, a 163 OPS+ to Rendon’s 158. Ramirez, wasn’t even close to Rendon, let alone better. He had a down year with a 106 OPS+ in 2019. Chapman was decent, a 128 OPS+, but still short of Rendon. And on top of all those incorrect assertions on your part, Rendon’s OPS+ (158) was 26 points higher than Arenado’s (132), 27 points higher than Turner’s (131), and 34 points higher than Donaldson’s ( 124), in 2019.

So basically you could hardly have bee more wrong. Seems like you have some dislike for Rendon than is based on something totally illogical.

        • tad2b13

          jdodson1822:

Also, he’s also among the top, looking at career wRC+:

          Rendon – 129
          Bregman – 145
          Ramirez – 124
          Chapman – 125
          Arenado – 118
          Turner – 131
          Donaldson – 139

Bregman is clearly at the top now. Donaldson and Turner have had better career numbers, but would you take either one over Rendon? Donaldson is 5 years older, and always an injury concern, and Turner is 6 years older. Rendon, considering his superior defense, has to be the 2nd best 3B behind Bregman.

        • YankeesBleacherCreature

@tad Get out of here with your facts, sound logic, and all that jazz. Gio Urshela is the best 3B in history.

        • jdodson1822

Rendon does not have superior defense. I’m looking at the whole player and if you look at things other than bat to ball offense, Rendon is not the best all around 3B, not even top 3 in 2019, he was terrible first half of 2020 when it mattered the most and now he’s hurt. Look up base running for each player. Look at clutch numbers. Look at UZR. For the price I’d take all the players listed over Rendon, since that is a thing too. He wasn’t worth the contract when it was signed and it’s only going to get worse from here

        • tad2b13

          YankeesBleacherCreature:

I have to admit I didn’t look at Urshela’s stats, mostly because he wasn’t mentioned in the post I was responding to, but I have to say, Gio is awesome. What a find/trade for the Yankees.

          jdodson1822:

Not sure where your bias against Rendon comes from. Is it because he’s injured?

Maybe I should have said above average, rather than superior, but I still disagree about his defense.. And I’m not looking at less illustrative stats like errors and fielding%. I like DRS. Rendon has 37 Defensive Runs Saved, Better than Bregman, Ramirez, and Donaldson. The only guys with better DRS are Chapman, Arenado, and Turner. Turner is the only guy among those 3 with better batting stats.

I used to look at UZR and UZR/150 a lot, until I realized what a misleading stat it is. It made more sense when teams didn’t shift as much. But UZR does not take the shift into account. If Rendon is pulled over by 2B in a shift, and there’s a hit where he normally plays he’s penalized. It’s outdated.

Clutch numbers are a total waste of time. Studies have shown being clutch as more a perception than a reality. Those studies showed guys that were considered clutch, hit around their career numbers in clutch situations. Guys that are good hitters, seem clutch, because if you’re a .300+ hitter, you’re going to deliver often.

Not sure why you cite base-running. Stats say Rendon takes more than 1 base on single, and more than 2 bases on a double 45% of the time. Both Turner and Bregman are at 40%. Good base runners score runs. Rendon has scored 605 runs in his career, 61 behind Donaldson, the leader, and 49 behind Arenado (of course anyone playing at Coors will score more runs.), and 94 more than Turner.

You can claim all you want to that he was not top 3 in 2019, but the numbers say you’re wrong.

Belli comes back, Raley gets sent down.
Graterol comes back, Santana probably goes to minors.
Gonsolin comes back, Alexander is the odd man out?
I don’t know if he has options but he’s the weak link.
+ Price and Gonzalez should be enough as the bullpen lefties.

@Samuel Are you so bitter that every post you make is about the Yankees/Mets?

        • Samuel

          @ YankeesBleacherCreature

          1. I don’t just make posts about the Yankees/Mets. To you thin-skinned bullies there is nothing going on in the world – let alone MLB – that’s important if it’s not from NYC.

          2. To the national sports media covering MLB, the entire sport revolves around the Yankees. Mets, Red Sox, and Cubs. Their players, prospects, managers, GM’s, etc., get far too much credit, while people busing their rear ends working in other cities are ignored by the national media and ridiculed by you baseball-challenged large market fans on all national forums.

So I figured that if you kids want to play hard ball I’ll play back. It’s not so much that your teams are awful – rather it’s how inadequate they are for the money your owners spend. It’s sort of like the White Sox under Kenny Williams – they can’t play defense or any fundamental baseball, so they try to make up for it by loading up a line-up of what are basically designated hitters. They have a lot of highlights with their HR’s, leaving their “fans” to resort to blaming their bad seasons on 1) injuries; 2) a set-up relief pitcher; and 3) a back-up infielder or outfielder.

Not only am I not bitter, I find this hilarious as it happens season after season. It is upsetting when players and teams play the sport correctly only to find that when they win it’s dismissed by you guys as “they just got hot” or some other slight.

Your teams don’t play good baseball. You don’t understand or respect the game or your opponents. If revenues were shared equally in MLB as they are in the NFL and NBA – your teams would be like the Knicks, Jets, and Giants.

What I can’t believe is that the LAD didn’t manage to trade him. I thought the $15M price tag that LA took was about right (maybe $1-2M too high). But once they put him in the BP, and not even as a closer, his real value was more like $4-5M. LA should’ve traded him, eaten half of his salary, and likely pick up a prospect if they ate that much salary. LA doesn’t make many mistakes, but $15M in the BP?

True Price is over paid with even the Sox money thrown in, but I look at it a little different. I put that money on Mookie. That was the Price to get him, no pun intended. That being said, while Price is on the team, Mookie is a 45m player aav… Wowzer!

        • YankeesBleacherCreature

@Joe To be fair, the Yankees are paying Britton $13M to relieve. Once the playoffs start, Price is a great multi-inning option in case one of their starters gets bounced early.

        • BlueSkies_LA

The Dodgers didn’t manage to trade Price because they weren’t interested in trading Price. The decision to start him off in the pen wasn’t a decision to leave him there. It had as much to do with his not having pitched for entire year as any other factor. The decision also wasn’t made until the end of Spring Training. Price will be a swingman, especially now that Gonsolin is out for an indefinite period. He will start games this year, almost guaranteed. He’ll likely be in the rotation the moment another starter hits the IL. And that’s why the Dodgers didn’t trade Price. They didn’t try and fail.

Head over to BR and look at Rendons stats. Stud. 38 BBS ro 31 KS last year with strong defense. Better than most think and the Angels lineup would be weak without him. I scratched my head when they signed him but glad they did. Just hope he keeps his production up for his age.. looks as though he can and will. Goo Angels!
