Pedro Strop Takes Personal Leave From Cubs

By Mark Polishuk | May 2, 2021 at 9:52pm CDT

Right-hander Pedro Strop is back home in the Dominican Republic on a leave of absence for personal reasons, NBC Sports Chicago’s Gordon Wittenmyer reports.  These seem to be all the details known at this time, as the Cubs haven’t given an official comment on the situation.

A member of the Cubs from 2013-19, Strop returned to the club on a minor league deal last September, with an injury-riddled and brief (2 1/3 innings) stint with the Reds representing his only action in the 2020 season.  Strop signed a new minors contract with Chicago in February and then made it to the MLB roster for a pair of scoreless innings over two appearances in April.  He had been working at the Cubs’ alternate training site since April 17.

It isn’t clear when, or even if, Strop could return to action.  Wittenmyer notes that Strop wasn’t included on the Triple-A roster (or the rosters of any of the Cubs’ affiliates), which is notable since the minor league season begins this week.

Didn’t Tommy La Stella do the same thing years ago, when he pouted and complained and threatened to retire when he found out he was going to be starting the year in AAA?

Hopefully it’s not the same with Strop. He already has a 0.1 WAR according to Baseball Reference, and GMs rely on sabermetrics and algorithms to make the decisions SOLELY based on a player’s WAR, so he’ll be back sooner than later since it’s a positive number.

“3 am” was actually being sent down to make roster moves with the promise he would be recalled once rosters expanded post Sept 1. It was just a numbers game to make room for others on the roster.

I am a nice person, but this is such a rude, and downright mean take. Be a nice person, and think before you talk. You’d be doing everyone a favor.

La Stella quit baseball in high school for a year because he didn’t have the motivation and mental capacity to give it his all. If he doesn’t feel like he’s motivated or in the right head space, he’s going to take time off and he should; what you said was just stupid.

Your personal life is ALWAYS more important than your job. We shouldn’t expect any different from pro athletes.

As a Sox fan, I hope Strop is alright. Family always has to come first; hope everything goes great and he’s back throwing gas before we know it.

Reds cubs played a very exciting game yesterday. 10 homers… extra innings. Epic

Nick “unplayable” Castellanos had a decent game.

Half game behind those mighty yankees.

Baseball is a great game even when bad teams play.

Based on his Instagram story, it looks like some type of wedding
