Yankees Recall Miguel Andujar, Option Albert Abreu

By TC Zencka | May 7, 2021 at 2:29pm CDT

The Yankees recalled Miguel Andujar today, the team announced. To make room, they optioned Albert Abreu to Triple-A.

Andujar arrives as insurance for starting third baseman Gio Urshela. An MRI on Urshela’s knee came back without any structural damage, so he’ll be day-to-day for now, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com (via Twitter). Urshela has once again proven himself to be a reliable bat for the Yankees. He’s slashing .287/.342/.455 with four home runs across 111 plate appearances, producing 0.7 bWAR.

Andujar himself has struggled to stay healthy. This spring he dealt with carpel tunnel syndrome in his wrist, though it hasn’t appeared to bother him so far. The minor league season is just three days old, but Andujar has already knocked three home runs while going 6-for-13.

As for Abreu, the 25-year-old right-hander made two appearances this season, both coming in the first half of April. He was placed on the roster just two days ago when Rougned Odor went to the injured list. Abreu will likely join the starting rotation in Triple-A.

Glad Andy is back. He was raking at AAA. Hopefully he’s found himself again. It will be nice to see him get some consistent at bats so he can perform offensively.

@davidk1979- overrated hitter? How often has he gotten a chance to hit? Smh. If he can stay healthy, there’s no reason for him not to hit at the major league level. Some team out there is going to eventually get a good hitter with power. It remains to see if Andy will play 3rd, lst, left field, or dh. Andy is way too talented not to play. If given the at bats he will hit, and his defense will improve.

Yep. I’d let Gio take as much as time as he needs to recoup as he’s too important to this team. Hope Miggy is here to stay and take some reps in LF too. Clint has run into some bad luck with a .170 Babip but he also has a 19% infield flyball rate. I wouldn’t mind if the Yankees send him down for a week or so.

He had 13 AB’s in AAA. I guess he mashed that extremely small sample size. Maybe it’s enough to put him in a confident place which may be more important than the number of AB’s he had though. I’ll be cheering for him.

Watch the Yankees sign Pujols for the league minimum after he goes unclaimed on waivers. Fits right in with cheap and has some power thing Cashman has going on. He’d be the starting 1st baseman.

nah he bats righty. They only go for lefties with power.

Why would they do that with Stanton entrenched in DH and raking. Pujols’ defense now may be worse than Gary Sanchez playing 1B.

@FredMcGriff for the HOF- Nah no need for Pujols on the Yankees, especially with Luke Voit on his way back. Pujols is a definite Hall of Famer. But it certainly is looking like it’s time to feed the pigeons, maybe he can take Gardy with him?

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Either has yet to earn the daily game WWE championship belt which Stanton yet has relinquished.

Glad to see Andujar back. The guy knows how to hit. When Urshela is back, they should make Andujar the everyday 1B until Voit returns. Andujar produces when he’s given consistent playing time.

The better Andujar plays the higher his trade value gets. He unfortunately doesn’t have a place on the Yankees unless they trade Voit, Judge or Stanton. Gio defense is too good to let him go.

They could move Frazier and go with him, Gardy and Stanton in LF.

Andujar has had teo fantastic games with Scranton WilkesBarre so far, and looks like the Andujar of old.

On the other hand Deivi Garxia got lit up like Independence Day fireworks against Syracuse, and didn’t look close to being MLB ready.

    Alright!

    Welcome back, Miggy.
Pretty nice bat to have waiting in the wings. Jeeez, I hope he’s made some progress with the glove, because he has a live bat, was clutch af in ’18, & he’s (by all accounts) an extremely hard worker.

I find him an easy kid to root for. Gotta earn it though.

Andujar isn’t going to perform. He is going to struggle as soon as pitchers feed him a consistent diet of breaking balls away (see Judge / Sanchez).

They underwhelm me in general over here.
There’s been one good one I’ve encountered here in a year.

I keep trying to send them over to the old River Ave Blues to study the work of Rainbow Trout – for example – in order to help develop their game to at least a semi-interesting level.

No takers. Thus, we are still stuck with these sub-par & lackluster attempts.
      Horse. Water. Drink.

There is only so much I can do to help them.

When you’re probably baseball’s worst defense, it just doesn’t matter anymore. Has a team that doesn’t run and play defense well ever been in a WS? Not likely.
