Mets Claim Robert Stock, Expected To Activate Michael Conforto Wednesday

By Anthony Franco | June 22, 2021 at 7:20pm CDT

7:20 pm: Conforto’s absence is indeed related to contact tracing protocols at Syracuse, the club announced. He has tested negative for COVID-19 and is expected to be reinstated in advance of tomorrow evening’s game against the Braves.

5:17 pm: The Mets announced they’ve claimed right-hander Robert Stock off waivers from the Cubs. He’s been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. Infielder Brandon Drury was also optioned, while catcher Patrick Mazeika was recalled.

Chicago just selected Stock to the big league roster last week. Generally a reliever, he made a four-inning spot start last Wednesday that ironically came against his new team. The 31-year-old allowed five runs on six walks while only striking out three, but the Mets were evidently intrigued by their then-opponent. After the Cubs designated him for assignment last weekend, New York put in a claim.

Stock has pitched to a 4.12 ERA with very strong strikeout and walk rates (30.5% and 4.9%, respectively) in Triple-A this year. He can be optioned for the rest of this season, so he’ll offer the Mets a flexible depth piece on the pitching staff.

Notably, the Mets did not reinstate outfielder Michael Conforto from the IL today. General manager Zack Scott told reporters (including Anthony DiComo of MLB.com) earlier in the day that the All-Star outfielder would return tonight. Notably, the Syracuse Mets, where Conforto had been on a rehab assignment, have since announced they’re dealing with a COVID-19 situation. It’s not clear if Conforto not being reinstated is related in any way.

I wonder what uniform Stock will use for the HOF. Gotta be Pads, right?

A bit of a surprise. He didn’t look good in his start against the Mets that I watched (5 earned runs and 6 walks in 4 innings). Granted, he’s not a starter and that was his first MLB start at age 31. It was also his first MLB appearance of 2021. I wonder what the Mets are thinking.

Yeah, I agree but I think with all of the doubleheaders, they just need a few arms.

Another arm to toss into that rotating last reliever role?

Fitting it’s NY. His stock is up and and there’s a demand for him. It’s a Stock Market. Launched his IPO with the Mets and a trade was brokered between the Cubs and the Mets. The Mets are bullish on him.

A tour de force. I came here to write “his stock is rising” but you took the pun game to a new level. Respect

Cubs drew to an inside straight, and lost Stock on waivers because of it.

If Ralph Kiner was still with us he would no doubt call him Robert Stack.

Are you watching this with Yernnsy Diaz throwing four mph less than a few days ago. He doesn’t appear properly warmed up after coming in cold. Tough spot, but give the guy all the time he needs and then some. Also, these minor leaguers had no season last year. And now we have the sticky stuff rules. A terrible season for pitchers might get even worse.

Metzfan – what’s coincidence not ironic that he pitched against the Mets last week. Also how many times you going to use the word notably?

Please do not trade Mauricio. Let’s not annihilate the possibility of future success by overreacting now.

The Mets need to trade for someone who can hit. They are 11-11 in the month of June, and extracting the 4 slap-happy games of June 2, 5, 6 and 9, they have averaged 5.1 hits per game over the other 18 games. You cannot win games by putting so much pressure on all the pitchers , starters or relievers, to pitch shutout innings. 5.1 HITS per game. They are lucky to be playing .500 ball over 22 games like that. Tell Mr Alderson to find a bat. The pitchers are handling themselves well enough.

They should have Conforto and McNeil back, Nimmo coming soon so that’s a big boost. They are built to heavily rely on starting pitching though. I’m just not sure I wanna give up much of the future to go further all in this year.

Stock – Imagine spending years, day after day, honing your skills at throwing to targets. Then at 31 years old you get that big break and walk six in four innings.
