Mets Purchase Vance Worley’s Contract

By Mark Polishuk | June 24, 2021 at 7:38pm CDT

The Mets have purchased the contract of right-hander Vance Worley from the independent Kane County Cougars, as announced yesterday via the Cougars’ official Twitter feed.  Worley will report to the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse.

This is Worley’s second stint in the Mets organization, as he signed a minor league deal with the team back in April 2018.  He didn’t see any big league action, however, and ended up being released just two months later after elbow problems limited him to just 16 2/3 innings of work with the Mets’ Triple-A team.  That represented Worley’s last bit of on-field action until his work with Kane County this year, as a deal with the independent Somerset Patriots in 2020 fell through after the pandemic canceled the Patriots’ season.

Worley posted a 4.09 ERA/4.23 SIERA over 667 career innings with five different teams from 2010-17.  The 33-year-old is probably best remembered for his career-opening three-year stint with the Phillies, which included a third-place finish in NL Rookie Of The Year voting in 2011.  Never a hard thrower or a big strikeout pitcher, Worley nevertheless lasted eight years in the majors by keeping batters off-balance with a four-pitch (and occasionally even a five-pitch) arsenal.

With the Mets currently shorthanded by a number of pitching injuries, there’s little harm for the club in picking up a veteran arm for some extra depth.  It remains to be seen if Worley will actually get a call back to the Show, as it is possible Marcus Stroman’s recent hip issue won’t be serious enough to merit an IL trip or even a missed start.

My thoughts exactly. I had to look him up just to make sure I wasn’t confused, lol. Good for him getting another potential opportunity in the big show.

That’s a funny story. At least the NY Daily News didn’t try to spin the photo and actually told the real story.

Nice. I was just thinking about him. I need more pitchers on my “All Asian Team.”

This year, the offense is great, but the pitching is a little thin, which is rarely the case.

I loved Terry Leach who was from Montgomery Alabama which I learned he was from there while I waited out a Thunderstorm which delayed my plane into Atlanta. I wound up watching him pitch that night in 1987 when he was the hottest Met pitcher from a back room at the airport versus the Braves.

Solid long man and starter. Just with those 80s Mets teams never had a spot.

Ironically, watching the Game in someone’s office at the Montgomery Alabama airport during the thunderstorm which grounded the airplanes was a surreal experience since I was in Atlanta Braves country and it was more than ok with the others to openly root for Terry Leach who was the homeboy.

It was almost as surreal as having a similar experience prior waiting out a thunderstorm in O’Hare airport with Bobby Riggs the tennis guy.

Worley was happy in 2015 when the Pirates got Joe Blanton on waivers because he had pitched with him on the Phillies.
The problem was that the Pirates released him to get Blanton.
His last pitch for Pittsburgh was a home run just into the right field seats hit by Christian Belancourt for a walk off for the Braves.
I always like Vanimal and thought that he was a decent pitcher.Yes,he may have been the last pitcher on a good team, but he was better than half the losers that the Pirates have been trotting out since then. The reason that he is not better respected has to do I think because he does not throw in the mid nineties. But then again his arm has not fallen off either.
I hope that he makes it back this year and does well.

When Philadelphia had that insane rotation of Lee, oswalt, Holliday and Hamels he was the fifth starter and always hoped he would pitch. How the phillies won a single title with those teams is a mystery like early 2000s Mariners teams.

That was an insane rotation. They only won one title because they ran into the loaded Yankees.

They had a great bullpen and lineup too. Looking back they were toe to toe. This is before players got hurt everyday.
