The Indians have placed ace Shane Bieber on the 10-day injured list due to a right shoulder subscapularis muscle strain, per a club announcement. Young lefty Kyle Nelson is up from Triple-A Columbus to take Bieber’s spot on the active roster. Manager Terry Francona tells reporters that Bieber won’t throw for the next two weeks (Twitter link via Camryn Justice of ABC News 5 in Cleveland).
Even a short-term absence for Bieber is a brutal blow for the Indians, who are six games over .500 but also five and a half games back of the White Sox for the division lead. The Indians are also currently without righty Zach Plesac due to a fractured thumb, leaving Aaron Civale as the most established option in their ailing rotation.
Cleveland has also given looks to youngsters Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill, Logan Allen, Sam Hentges and Jean Carlos Mejia so far in 2021. No one from that grouping has proven himself to be a reliable option just yet, but the Indians will nevertheless need to tap further into that depth with Bieber on the shelf.
It’s been another strong season for Bieber, albeit one that’s not quite on par with last year’s utter dominance in a Cy Young-winning effort. Bieber leads the Major Leagues with 90 2/3 innings pitched, and he’s worked to a 3.28 ERA with a 33.9 percent strikeout rate that ranks seventh in the Majors.

And hitting his thumb on a chair. It was a temper tantrum following a poor start, not unlike Ynoa punching the wall, though less severe.

Et tu, Bieber? What the heck is wrong with the modern day player? Its the new pandemic of baseball. Muscle strains!?!?!?!

Well, he didn’t do all that well last time he was out. 5.2 innings, 10 hits, 5 ER, 2 home runs, though a solid 8/2 K/BB ratio. But anymore since the IL is only 10 days, if you plan on skipping your starter’s next start, it’s worth it to put them on the IL with a ‘phantom injury’ so you can get that extra roster spot for a week. There might not be anything wrong with Bieber other than some fatigue.
rememberthecoop
The human arm was never intended to throw a ball like that repeatedly. But Jerry bird I believe a lot of injuries are due to at least 2 factors: one, weightlifting; and dos, guaranteed contracts. Some pitchers back in the day would pitch thru injuries just to stay employed. Ultimately, that does no one any good – not the team or the player. I think it’s much easier to take time off when you are in year 1 or 2 of a 4-year deal. As long as you’re healthy and productive in year 4, someone will show you the money.
Tko11
Let me ask you this. Why do you default to believing weightlifting leads to injuries rather than preventing them? Do you think you know something about injuries that all the Strength and Conditioning coaches and PTs don’t know?
Injuries are multi factoral. What if Bieber was sleeping 3 hours a day? or has undiagnosed sleep apnea? Or is deficient in certain vitamins or minerals due to poor nutrition? Or if he’s in an extremely stressed state 90% of the day? What about him just throwing a lot of innings this year has caught up?
Weightlifting done with the guidance of their S&C team is the last thing I’d be worried about. Reminds me of how people were saying Stanton and Judge got injured because they had too much muscle. Yet when a regular or skinny guy gets injured its never due to a lack of muscle. Then when they rehab they do what? Physical therapy to build up muscle and improve movement…
oldmansteve
Agree 100%. Strength training prevents injuries far more than it causes them. Anyone who disagrees with this is an idiot who has never read any research or has no background whatsoever in physical fitness. To be fair, what else would you expect from a country where over 60% of the population is overweight?
JerryBird
Any training should be done accordingly. The high numbers of injuries could suggest these guys may not be doing everything according to the plan. Then again, I am no expert because the only weight lifting I do consists of 12 ounce curls on a nightly basis.
Steve—Just an FYI, my shoulder wasn’t dislocated, it was a shoulder subscapularis muscle strain. Too many beers, my friend. I absolutely loved you comment.
I am sure many of these types of injuries were ignored or never reported in the past when players actually had to work to be paid, so I agree with the above comment on guaranteed contracts.
TKo11—chill out and come over for a beer. We can watch the Cardinals fall further down the standings. I have a total gym that you can use for hanging up your jacket.
JerryBird
Coop—We are in complete agreement, my friend.
JoeBrady
I agree. I think weightlifting could be bad, but only if done in isolation. There are a million tiny muscles in the body, and you are only as good as your weakest link. Stretching exercises before, and especially after, are vital. Recovery time, so the muscles are not in a state of exhaustion, is important.
And I like the use of multi-factorial, and will use that at my next poker game.
hockeyjohn
Do you read the article mlb1225? Bieber will not throw for two weeks then they will reevaluate.

Seriously, he hasn’t looked all that great this season. Add in that Francona did what he’s always done and let his pitch counts get so high when unnecessary, and this is the result. I’ve seen it before.
JoeBrady
Bieber has made 78 consecutive starts, and now suddenly, pitch counts are an issue?

Big Sexy pitched a complete game shutout in the Mexican League last night, I believe. And he’d put fannies in the seats.
Of course, his fanny wouldn’t fit in a seat, but……

Well of course the Indians did. He’s been getting knocked around a bit and his control isn’t pinpoint. Tito will have the whole staff burned out by August.

This has to be great news for Paul Dolan and family ! The Indians will now plummet down the AL Central standing; thus allowing ownership to hold a July fire sale.
The penny-pinching Dolans can now take their laughable 55 million dollar pay roll down to absurd lows….25-30 million ? All while saying bye bye to Jose Ramirez, Carlos Hernandez, Eddie Rossario, (and possibly even Shane Beiber himself) for middle of the road prospects from better run + properly funded baseball organizations.
And no….I’m not talking about big market spenders like the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc. I’m referring to other mid/small-market teams like the Padres, Cardinals, Rays, A’s, and Brewers (among others).
hockeyjohn
I would argue greatly with you Paulk with your comment better run. You can complain about properly funded and I would agree, but the Indians has one of the top front offices in the game. Since the start of 2013, the Indians have won more games than every other team except the Dodgers. Their front office did that on their small market budget.
paulk
I was mostly referring to ownership with the “better run” statement. However, the compensation Cleveland’s front office received in recent deals (Lindor trade is a prime example) has been “meh” to put it mildly.
I thought they should have done better in the Clevenger deal as well. To be frank, I do not think they should have traded him to begin with. Just more getting by on the cheap on the part of the Dolans; as they did not want to pay his likely high (though still a bargain for a pitcher of his quality) arbitration number. Yeah, I know he’s hurt now. But if he doesn’t get traded it changes the circumstances that caused his injury in San Diego.
The Indians got back 0 prospects who were on the MLB top 100 list, nor any “quality” major leaguers, in those deals. There is just no excuse for that in my opinion. If you’re gonna play cheap ball like Cleveland, you need to have a top ranked farm system like the Rays do.
JoeBrady
I have no idea what you are looking at, but they absolutely killed it in both the Lindor deal and Clevinger deal. The three guys they gave up have combined for 2.0 bWAR and have earned maybe $37M. Rosario alone has been playing almost equal this year with Lindor.

Losing Carlos Hernandez wouldn’t be a bad thing.

What an incredibly stupid statement. For teams that have absolutely -0- fans, the Indians and TB are the two best run teams in BB.
And I hate to repeat myself, but what an incredibly stupid statement.
PutPeteinthehall
He’s out until after the break if he’s able to come back this season. The facts are this: A’s Astros Rays and Red Sox are going to win divisions or have records good enough to win a wildcard. Indians need to win the division to go to the post season. They trail a team that leads the league in scoring. Even with more half the season left this looks to be enough to kill their hopes. Bieber was not only 20 percent of the rotation he was almost 20 percent of the staff as he was counted on to go seven every time out. Too bad with Twins tanking.
User 3044878754
The Indians have the season edge on those vaulted White Sox 6 games to 5.
Regarding the White Sox runs scored plus factor, it means NOTHING,
If you win 10-1 or 2-1, it’s still a W.
The Indians will win the division against the Sox in their late September series.
Avory
Wildcard is as much in play for the Tribe as the division. Yes, it will require Bieber to return to health, along with Plesac, as well as a number of kids to step up. But this year will demonstrate once and for all how difficult it is to maintain pitching staff health throughout a season, not to mention how damaging to arms a lengthy postseason is. Baseball is stupid to keep adding to the postseason in a sport so dependent on a specialty (pitching).. Other sports don’t have this problem. Watch offense soar back to high levels the second half of this year once pitching thins out.
purplewidow
probably has to actually learn how to pitch and not use foreign substances anymore.. I just watched a vid that showed bieber constantly going to the glove with his pitching hand and putting a substance on his index finger and thumb multiple times during the seattle game. guy is an obvious cheater.
3Men&ABibee
Stop spreading lies to fit your narrative. Not one person (besides you) seen it or it was even mentioned. You a tool. Smh
purplewidow
hey_commy on tiktok posted it 21h ago look it up and then comment.. don’t just say i’m lying.. the guy actually defended bieber before and clearly states he was wrong with the evidence. Bieber is clearly wiping his thumb and index finger on the same part of his glove multiple times with the ball in his glove.. it isn’t compulsive.. it’s intentional.. it’s painstakingly obvious. lol
3Men&ABibee
No sorry. Good try.

For all the experts here opining about the innocuous nature of weightlifting:
“According to research, even professional weightlifters have a higher likelihood of spine, shoulder and knee injuries.”
You can read more at “How Poor Weightlifting Form Leads to Injury” on the Integrated Rehabilitation Services website.
JoeBrady
I read the article, and this is what it said:
“As a training routine, weightlifting offers several benefits, including fat loss, increased bone density and strength.”
Obviously, that is just the first sentence, but it is true. The part about the injuries is also true. But bad form will lead to injuries no matter what your workout routine is. The article refers to shoddy equipment causing injuries, but so will bad running shoes and basketball sneakers.
One of the issues in life, particularly as you age, is maintaining strength. That’s what gets you off your chair, and up a flight of stairs. And it is absolutely vital for women to help deal with bone density issues.
Lastly, when an organization sells training services, don’t necessarily believe them when they tell you that you need training services. It’s probably a good idea, but they have a vested interest with that advice.
Poster formerly known as . . .
The folks at Integrated Rehabilitation Services have no interest in delivering training services. They’re in the business of rehabilitative physical therapy for people who’ve been injured.
The application of this one to pitcher injuries leapt out at me:
“Weightlifting is a fairly repetitive activity. Over time, these rhythmic behaviors put strain on the shoulders and could result in rotator cuff injury or a SLAP (superior labrum anterior and posterior) tear. If your shoulders feel weak, you hear joints popping or you can’t raise your arms up without pain, reduce the number of reps involving overhead positioning.”
And being aware of Aaron Judge’s repeated issues with back pain, which have been attributed by fans to his size and by his manager to playing on Astroturf, I thought of him when reading this paragraph:
“If you experience lower back pain after lifting, it’s often a byproduct of poor form. By default, lifting a heavy load squeezes the intervertebral discs, which places strain on the vertebrae and ligaments. Too many repetitions with poor form may result in a herniated disc, which starts with pain or tingling in the lower back that may also travel down the legs. Watch your position as you lift and limit the number of reps – particularly if squats are involved – to protect your spine.”
As for trainers with a vested interest, I think that’s the elephant in the room. How many of the trainers marketing themselves to these teams and these athletes really know what the hell they’re doing? It seems striking to me that the more I read about these “advanced” training techniques being sold to teams and athletes, the more I read things like this:
“Through Tuesday and 48 days of the schedule, there had been 351 uses of the injured list in 2021 compared to 281-291 from 2017-19, according to tracking done by MLB.” – Joel Sherman, New York Post, 5/19/2021
JoeBrady
I don’t disagree that weightlifting needs to be monitored. I see both sets of guys at the gym. Good all-around build, but guys with biceps, and no other muscles. Those are injuries waiting to happen. Unless you have a particular target, most guys are probably better off emulating the way women lift.
