Cardinals Sign First-Round Pick Michael McGreevy

By Anthony Franco | July 18, 2021 at 3:26pm CDT

TODAY: McGreevy received an $2.75MM bonus, according to MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis (Twitter link).

JULY 16: The Cardinals announced this evening that they’d come to terms on a contract with first-round pick Michael McGreevy. Terms of the deal remain unclear. The slot value for the #18 overall selection, with which McGreevy was selected, is $3.4813MM.

McGreevy dominated hitters over his three-year career at UC Santa-Barbara. The righty worked to a 2.33 ERA across 189 1/3 innings as a Gaucho, striking out 25.1% of batters faced while walking only 4.0% of opponents. The Big West isn’t among Division I baseball’s few best conferences, but there’s still little doubt McGreevy was one of the top performers in the country.

There’s a bit more divisiveness among public evaluators about where exactly he fit among the draft’s top arms, though. Baseball America was extremely bullish on the 21-year-old, naming him the 16th most talented player in the class. BA lauded his elite control and plus curveball in calling him a potential mid-rotation starter.

Each of Kiley McDaniel of ESPN, Eric Longenhagen and Kevin Goldstein of FanGraphs, and Keith Law of the Athletic slotted McGreevy between 35th and 50th on their respective draft boards. Those outlets expressed some concerns about McGreevy’s below-average velocity (90-93 MPH range), although he draws unanimous praise for his athleticism and strike-throwing acumen.

Ya know, Sox and Cardinals go along with our mutual hate of the Cubs so why not? Cardinals second favorite team then, I guess

His name sounds like he should be a villain in a Christmas movie. Evil Mr. McGreevy.

Y’all don’t know the history behind the McGreevy name??

Mike “Nuf Ced” McGreevy was the leader of the Royal Rooters, which was the Boston Americans and Boston Red Sox official fan club back in the day.

He owned a bar called the “Third Base Saloon”. Why was it named that?

Because it was the last stop before home.

There’s a band called Dropkick Murphys that owned a Boston bar named McGreevy’s for many years, closing just last August.

The Dropkick Murphys also wrote a song about the 2004 Red Sox called “Tessie”, named after the song the Royal Rooters would sing at games

Cardinals-type pick all the way. Not a Redbirds fan but I see this cat being a quality starter for St. Louis.

Anything Keith Law says can be taken with a grain of salt. He has an axe to grind with LaRussa and gas allowed that to severely influence his writings about the Cardinals over the years.

Will McGreevy receive the 2.75MM bonus money and the 3.48MM amount noted for the slot value?

Hopefully the savings can be applied to get Josh Baez to sign. I’m satisfied with McGreevy but if you’d have told me they’d sign both these guys before the draft I’d have been over the moon. Baez could end up doing nothing but that guy is seriously built for 18.
