Darren O’Day’s Season Likely Over After “Significant” Hamstring Injury

By Anthony Franco | July 18, 2021 at 3:13pm CDT

TODAY: O’Day will likely miss the rest of the season, Boone told Newsday’s Erik Boland and other reporters today.

JULY 8: Last night, the Yankees placed reliever Darren O’Day on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain. Manager Aaron Boone provided an update this morning, telling reporters (including Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media) it appears to be a “significant” injury. O’Day, who suffered the injury during a recent pregame workout, was sent for an MRI.

The news is particularly concerning given the righty’s history. O’Day underwent season-ending surgery to repair a strain in the same hamstring while with the Orioles in 2018. Until the MRI results come back, it won’t be known whether he’ll require a similar procedure this time around, but it unfortunately seems there’s a possibility he’ll require an extended absence.

It’s the second major injury O’Day has dealt with this season. He suffered a right rotator cuff strain that landed him on the IL in early May and had only just returned last week. That has kept the veteran submariner to 10 2/3 innings of 3.38 ERA ball this season. When healthy, O’Day has generally been highly effective. He was one of the game’s best set-up men for much of his time in Baltimore and pitched to a 1.25 ERA/2.60 FIP across 21 2/3 frames with the Braves between 2019-20.

If the hamstring injury winds up costing O’Day much or all of the remainder of the season, he’ll be faced with a tougher decision this winter. The 38-year-old signed a one-year guarantee with the Yankees in late January that contained a $1.4MM player option ($700K buyout) for 2022. O’Day would’ve been highly likely to decline his end of the deal with a healthy, typical season but a significant injury might change that decision. If O’Day declines his end of the option, the Yankees can trigger a $3.15MM club option to keep the righty in the fold next year.

      That’s too bad. Thought Yankees could trade him at TD. Okay Trade Cessa, Britton, now among so many others.

          They won’t do it but Yankees should put out feelers for a Chapman trade ! Both sides could probably use a separation from another

          They might get a few bats and bags of balls for Chapman if they send money with the trade!! Nothing like an overpriced, underperforming middle reliever at the moment

        No.

        Yanks need to add. Not subtract. I realize this particular hill is a fairly lonely one amongst the other Yankee fellas on the board. I’m good with it though.

        Hope this doesn’t end his season.
        O’Day certainly hasn’t been the problem.

          They. Can do both ! Chapman has rightly gotten booed mercifully by the fans but doesn’t seem like The tough love is gonna lead to him doing better ! They don’t have to trade him for prospects necessarily they can trade him for immediate help ! Maybe Phillies buy on him

          @Noel- I miss the challenge Trades of yesteryear as well

          Lorenzo Cain for Chapman probably makes a lot of sense for both clubs- They have essentially same monies left over the next 1.5 years

          Yanks would def get an extra piece as well off that trade and not just a nobody – Probably a #10~20 prospect

          I know Cain isn’t the same Cain as before but perhaps a change of scenery can give him and the team some spark and stability in CF the last 7o days and next year as well- Cain started a rehab assignment yesterday.

          I’m a fan of Chappy and think he will bounce back, but that extra year at $17 for an RP (who has ? ) would just kill his value in a trade for prospects or cheap arb players – If he was expiring he’d have netted more in that sort of trade

          @CC Cain hasn’t been good since 2018. I’d rather have a LHH Gardy. Your proposal doesn’t make sense to me and doesn’t move the needle. May actually make the team worse.

          I don’t care for that specific deal myself. But the framework could be something. Obviously, I’m not Chapman’s biggest fan. But his recent pyromania binge doesn’t sit well at the moment.

          Wasn’t really tailored to move the needle, more of a change of scenery/fit trade- Chapman (w Monies owed) no longer Will move any needle so that wasn’t really a plausible find

          I disagree on Gardner

          Agree that just getting Cain would be selling Chapman short…only prob is nobody is paying retail the next 3 weeks on AC with that 18 mill looming in 22 so you’d have to get a little creative

          Cain also changes the monotony up from all the 3 TO Yanks and would still be the best CF they have on their roster

          That just seems like making a trade for the sake of one. Chapman at least has redeeming qualities and can bounce back to earn his paycheck as an elite closer. Cain is now probably best suited as a fourth outfielder. What are Yankees going to do next year with their glut of outfielders with Hicks, Cain, Frazier, Andujar, and Locastro? Neither one of these guys have good trade value. I’m not against trading Chappy but not for Cain. I think Chad Greene could probably close.

          I really hope the Yankees choose to buy at the deadline. Deplete the farm system a bit, make them even more mediocre in the long run.

          Red Sox already have their hands full with the Rays and the Jays the next several seasons, if the Yankees make the dumb decision to go for it this year it only helps us in the short and the long run!

      Dude, what the hell are you talking about? The Yankees don’t want to put O’Day back on the IL, they want him healthy and in their bullpen.. so they have to give less innings to bums like Kriske or Nelson. He legitimately got hurt during a pregame workout, and by all reports it’s to the same hamstring he had to have surgically repaired 3 years ago. So with all due respect, get out of here with your nonsense.

    Cashman gave away Ottavino and prospects to be able to sign this guy. Meanwhile, Ottavino is pitching great for the first place Red Sox. Yet another dumb move by Cashman. He’s the most overrated GM of all time.

      Ottavino was awful last year and he was expensive. I think it’s more likely he was traded so Cashman could sign Kluber. The Yankees signed him a couple of days after they traded Adam for close to the same money. They signed O’Day for $1.75m with a $1.4m option. Pretty sure O’Day and Wilson were replacements for Kahnle and Holder. It was a good decision since the Yankees have gotten the same production (not much) out of them for less than they paid Kahnle last year.

    It’s time for Boone to go. The Yankees had injuries but nothing like under Boone when Girardi and Torre were leading them. They need a manager with experience not just Cashman’s yes man. It was surprising to see them give the job to someone with no experience at all. Give Doug Davis a shot for the rest of the year and see how he does. He isn’t splashy but he has the experience they need and their younger players will know him from Scranton.

        I agree, Joe Says. How many here truly believe Aaron Boone would’ve ever been a Big League Manager if not for that walk off HR against Boston in 2003? I say zero chance. His complete and almost daily mismanagement of the bullpen is absolutely staggering. How many starting pitchers has he screwed out of wins pulling them after 4.2 innings? I assure you, those pitchers don’t easily forget about that and it happens a LOT more than the average fan realizes and to be fair, Girardi did the same thing quite often himself.

          You are right. If not for that he would have been that “oh yeah i forgot he played for the Yankees” guy. They really need to make some roster moves and stop hoping everyone stays healthy and turns it around. The season is a wash so wait for off season to change if any.

    I’m starting to wonder about all these injuries. I would be curious to know what percentages of players are injured broken down by BMI, under 25 and over 25. I’d be willing to bet there’s a significant difference. A lot of players are way too massive for their own good. No matter what your body fat percentage is at, extra weight creates greater potential for injury. O’Day is 6’4” and 220 pounds to throw underhand. Too big. Just my theory right now. It would be interesting to run the numbers. Many of yesteryears greats were not massive, they were lean and injury free.

        Not if you’re injured all the time. Carlton Fisk is listed at 6’3” and 200 pounds, BMI = 25. Nolan Ryan is listed at 6’2” and 170 pounds, BMI = 21.8. Split the difference and you have me at 6’2.5” and 185 pounds. Those two guys were playing until they were 46, I ran an 8 minute pace marathon at 46 to qualify for Boston, I also ran an 8 minute pace marathon at age 24. Staying power, the ability to compete for a long time, I think you have to be less of a load than the modern ball player.

        Derek Jeter BMI = 24.4, I rest my case.

          Why would the Yankees be buyers if they have said all along they don’t want to go over the tax. If Yankees trade for anyone significant and deplete the farm. It means once again the Yankees are acting out of desperation. I know it’s early in the season but I don’t see this team going on a long winning streak. Both hitters and pitchers have been way too inconsistent. Besides I’m hoping they fall on their face and finally make some changes. The Yankees have serious issues. I wouldn’t mind Yankees making Showalter the GM and possibly Willie Randolph as manager.

        I guarantee there is a relationship between BMI and injury. Same engine, heavier car, not as good performance, more breakdowns. It’s that simple.

        Bonds = 24.4
        Ripken = 24.3
        Mays = 24.4

      Bartolo Colon is 5’11” 285 lbs. for a BMI of 39.7. BMI is only one component of measuring an athlete’s total body composition and isn’t a tell-all. We can cherry-pick players all day long but that doesn’t tell us anything scientifically nor statistically.

        And some people who smoke live to 100. Doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

        My comments about BMI under 25 is not some random statement. It’s based on medical research that people who have BMI over 25 have more medical problems. It would make sense to me that if you are trying to get the most out of your body and you have a BMI over 25, you would be more prone to injury. Those under 25 would therefore be less prone to injury. It’s also a proxy for the theory that baseball players are too built up for their own good. The engine doesn’t really change. Yes, you can train it but it has limitations. When you ask it to power something larger it creates a greater chance of breaking down. The engine is your heart, your lungs, your blood flow, your hydration, everything in your body that powers your body and keeps it working properly.

      The problem is the Yankees don’t really have “rentals”. Gardner, Kluber, Britton, and O’Day are the only players on the roster who are free agents next winter and three of them are injured and Gardner has been awful. Unless they are willing to dangle Judge, LeMahieu, Torres, Urshela, Taillon, German, and Chapman and see what if anything they can get for them the Yankees legitimately couldn’t be sellers if they wanted too.

    What does it even matter anymore? The Yankees could trade for or sign an all star at every single position and within 2 months they will all be dumpster fires, performing worse than they ever have and constantly hurt. This current Yankees organization is the best example of “reverse the curse of the Bambino”. It’s just true. No matter what move they make, it totally backfires on them big time. Take it to the bank, any person reading my words, even if they are only 5 years old, will NEVER have the joy of seeing our beloved Yankees win another World Series in any of our lifetimes.
