East Notes: Rays, Walls, Yankees, Britton, Mets, Peterson, Syndergaard

By TC Zencka | July 3, 2021 at 10:40am CDT

The Rays have activated Taylor Walls from the injured list, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter). The move comes after Luis Patino was optioned back to Triple-A yesterday. Walls would give manager Kevin Cash a five-man bench, which would be unusual for the Rays. Still, for now, Walls is back on the active roster, having recovered from a bout of wrist tendonitis. Certainly, the return of Walls puts the immediate future of Wander Franco into question, though there’s been no indication of a roster move at this time. For what it’s worth, Walls held his own with a .222/.337/.333 line in 95 plate appearances, good for a 96 wRC+to pair with stellar marks on the defensive side of the ball — he was credited with 8 DRS, 2.0 UZR, and 2 Outs Above Average in just 214 1/3 innings at short. Staying on the East Coast…

  • Zack Britton is throwing off the mound today for the first time since going on the injured list. He is eligible to return to the Yankees on Monday, per Kristie Ackert of the NY Daily News (via Twitter). Britton has just five appearances on the season. The Yankees might very well try to get him back into games ahead of the All-Star break so as to allow for a measured ramping up process.
  • As for the Mets, David Peterson has been diagnosed with a strained right oblique that will keep him out for around eight weeks, at best guess, but maybe less, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (via Twitter). It hasn’t been a great year for Peterson, who owns a 5.54 ERA/4.77 FIP through 115 starts totaling 66 2/3 innings.
  • Noah Syndergaard, meanwhile, was throwing today, but he timetable remains the same. The Mets are looking tentatively at a September 1st return for Thor, notes DiComo.

MF22, just stop embarrasing us dude because our lineup sucks with or without the bigger names!! Since Conforto and McNeil came back, we are a below .500 team…..its not looking good and we have a bad front office….

They’ve had a rough year offensively. Wouldn’t say they suck. MF22 is a cheerleader yes, but They don’t suck. With injuries and coming off a shortened season, I can understand some struggle, but they certainly do need to improve from being the 30th ranked offense in the league to stay in the lead. That said, it’s July 3 and they’re still in 1st, so that says something. Loving Nimmo today!

Why the hell would you say the Mets have a bad front office? Anderson is a legend. He built one of the best pitching staffs in baseball and has many home grown everyday players.

Oh my god…you are soooo astute. Your baseball knowledge…your incredible intellect have me on board. Its definitely the Meta year!!! NO Team has suffered the incredible injuries that the Mets have…their team is awesome..incredible…simply amazing. I’m thinking I should contact the commissioner’s office and have him call the rest of the season off…no one can or will possibly catch the Mets this year so why even bother playing the game!! And the funny thing is…if the Mets fold and loose the division…it will be because of all the injuries…a built in excuse…how nice. Nevwrmind that other teams are so much better then they are…why in the world would we possibly give any credit to any other team.

Yes. But they must have the worst training/medical staff in the league. Look at these hamstring, oblique and similar injuries. They have to hydrate much better; warm up better and stretch before games. Hitting the wall or getting hit by a baseball is one thing, but I’ve never seen the Mets or any other team with so many pulled muscles. They need a complete review of their procedures.

There is no denying that. What a disappointment the NL East has been. Many thought it was going to be the best division to watch. It’s getting better now but it’s difficult to make up for an entire half season of terrible play.

NL East broke my heart in 2019 ….I pegged it up to be a classic Division race all the way with 4 good teams ….3rd year running Div has been a disappointment….

OFc the randomness of baseball gave the crown to the NL east in that same 19 tho

Where’s Technically Correct when you need him?

Lindor wasn’t a FA signing; he was acquired via trade and signed to an extension.

Why do we need him? We have you to ignore the main point of someone’s post to worry about technicalities. We don’t need more of that.

That contract extension is starting to look kind of ugly. It was easy to over look Lindors 2020 because of mitigating circumstances but now you have to start thinking something is wrong. I’m a Braves fan and all but I kind of feel for Mets fans on this one. After all, not all Mets fans are as obnoxious as as MetsFan22. Not saying the contract is a failure but you have to be concerned about how it has started.

      Huh.

Anyway,I wonder if it’s left over from his concussion. He really struggled coming back from that. & it would explain why he has been so discombobulated at the plate & on the grass.

So..MLBTR is NOT on Steinbrinner’s payroll?

It does get old reading comments about east coast or west coast bias claims. The writers are simply going where the stories are which is why we have seen plenty written about the White Sox, Cubs, Brewers, Cardinals and Twins though the last two for less..positive reasons.

The last few weeks – indeed the season as a whole – has just not been very much fun.

          So.
Get ’em today & let’s go on a little run here.

The future of Wander Franco is “in question”? As in what, they will send him back to aaa? Come on. He can play other positions, and there is obviously nothing left for him in the minors…dude hits the ball hard, that will even out, and may as well allow him to get all this experience. Without more pitching, I don’t see my Rays winning the division, so may as well let the young pups get in their work. Josh Lowe, Vidal Brujan, et. al.

Yes they need a review of all their procedures. I mean a certain pandemic that closed out the gyms and restricted facilities and a drastically shortened year and for many minor leaguers not having played a single inning last year along with restrictions of the trainers and staff to work with players in the offseason due to same pandemic restrictions had absolutely nothing to do with it. Throw in that now most of the players now playing more games this year than they did last year.

Every other team in the league faced the same things. While many teams have seen increase in these injuries, the mets do seem to be harder hit than most. Now whether that has anything to do with their trainers/procedures, who knows…but the pandemic doesn’t just explain away why the mets have seen more injuries than the other teams.
