Giants Designate Mike Tauchman For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 29, 2021 at 12:54pm CDT

The Giants announced that they’ve designated outfielder Mike Tauchman for assignment as part of a series of roster moves. San Francisco has also reinstated Brandon Crawford from the 10-day injured list, reinstated Aaron Sanchez from the 60-day injured list (hence the 40-man move) and optioned righty John Brebbia to Triple-A.

Tauchman, 30, came to the Giants in an early-season swap that sent left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta to the Yankees. The former Rockies farmhand had a surprise breakout with the Yankees in 2019 but took a step back in 2020 and has yet to produce much in 2021 with either New York or San Francisco. The Giants gave Tauchman 175 plate appearances, but he managed only a .178/.286/.283 with four homers and four doubles. The Giants valued Tauchman’s glove in center field, and he made a couple of key home run robberies during his time as a Giant.

Ultimately, however, the Giants simply ran out of room for Tauchman on the big league roster — and because he’s out of minor league options, he can’t simply be sent to Triple-A. San Francisco has Mike Yastrzemski, Steven Duggar, Alex Dickerson, Austin Slater, Darin Ruf and LaMonte Wade Jr. as outfield alternatives on the MLB roster at the moment, and the Giants have been tied to some possible outfield upgrades on the trade market as well (e.g. the since-traded Starling Marte and the still-available Kyle Schwarber).

The Giants can trade Tauchman to another club if they can find a partner prior to tomorrow afternoon’s deadline. Otherwise he’ll be placed on outright waivers and made available for all 29 other teams to claim.

I liked Tauchman as a guy, but yeah, that bat wasn’t doing anything. We’ll always have those two game-saving catches.

Cashman liked him a lot; he makes sense for the Yankees as a fifth outfielder.

I gotta disagree ctyank. With Allen, Florial and LaMarre already on the team, there’s just no need for Tauchman. And that’s not including Andujar and Frazier, if they ever get back from injury.

@Joe Says.. I agree with you 100%. I love the play of Florial and Allen. I wish Hicks could be traded and Gardy could either released or just retire.

Injured or not, Andujar and Frazier will be traded for Scherzer and Story, so Tauchman could act as that final depth piece

Looks like Padres are about to get Scherzer. Zaidi better have something really good in the works because Dodgers and Padres continue to apply pressure.

And Giants continue to get no respect from Steve Phillips – MLB Network on SiriusXM. First he said Giants would be in 3rd place in NL West by 07/15, then 08/15 and now saying 09/15.

Tauchman was good defensively but bat wasn’t there. Good decision to let him go and same for optioning Brebbia.

Zaidi needs to make a big time splash before tomorrow’s trade deadline ends. EX: Scherzer, Kimberly, Berrios, Story, Gray, Bryant, Merrifield, etc.

Got to prove to the Dodgers and Padres the Giants are for real. This is our year.

      Giants are 0-7 against Buehler.

Why is Vosler still on the roster? Hopefully he will be DFA’d soon to make room for Scherzer! More than likely though there will be no big trade(s) and the deadline will pass with these being the only moves of note. Would be great if we had a GM/President who could actually pull off a big trade or draft good players or sign a superstar or two. Instead he keeps proving me right by sticking with the safe low risk low reward dollar store approach which isn’t going to get it done down the stretch and come playoffs. If the team wasn’t making money this would be a great strategy but ownership is raking in the cash still charging $20 for crab sandwiches and $40 for parking shile the payroll keeps getting lower and lower. This is probably the biggest reason they can’t sell out the stadium anymore and it was invaded last night by Dodger fans. Dollar store product with Whole Foods prices.

you pay $20 for a tiny crab sandwich, don’t know why you did it, proceed to eat and enjoy it, and then do it all over again. Endless cycle, they’ll never lower the price unfortunately

@giant4, I respectfully disagree with your assessment of Z and Harris. I think Z has been treading water waiting for the big contracts to come off the books while bolstering the farm and finding some fun and serviceable players on the cheap to bide us some time. I don’t think he (or any of us expected to be contenders this early in the rebuild). Wait until tomorrow at 5pm to criticize his ability to make acquire an impact player now and wait to see what happens when he’s got a bunch more financial flexibility after this year. BTW: Vosler will be the next one sent down to clear a roster slot for returning vets or new acquisitions.

Yes that is the same refrain heard over and over for the last two years. That no longer matters. When you are in first place, somewhat sustainably, and you have plenty of decent prospects who can be traded then it is time to grow a pair. If Farhan doesn’t add to this team with significant pieces and the Giants end up in the ridiculous one game wild card with the second best record in the league, then the front office has slapped the entire fan base in the face.

I welcome respectfully disagreeing with me anytime! My fear is that since FZ hasn’t done anything other than the dumpster dives up to now that he is either incapable or unwilling to make any big moves. He has gotten us this far with the moves he has made but to get over the hump it will take more than that. I’m not the only one that is staying away from the park, there is zero reason why they shouldn’t be selling out every game other than the other fans see the same thing that I do, ownership getting theirs while the fans pay just as much as they did when ownership actually spent money. It has been 3 offseasons and no signs yet that they will open the checkbooks but I hope I am wrong and will gladly admit it if/whennit happens!

Stop whining, they’re miraculously in first place, just enjoy it.
This team has incredibly over performed and any true fan with half a brain understands that we can’t mortgage the blindingly bright future just to try to win in the short term.
How are you still crying about Z after he’s gotten us to this point so fast?
Your claim that he is “unwilling to make big moves” stems from the fact that his hands were tied by bad contracts and he’s trying to rebuild a team while staying competitive. It didn’t make any sense to bring in more pricey free agents!
Also, there’s this pandemic going on, not sure if you’ve heard? Has way more to do with the stadium not being 100% full…
And I wish that Trade Rumors would publish an article that fully explains once and for all how ticket prices and player salaries have nothing to do with each other. So tired of people whining about that!

The environment of the city is a mess currently.
A lot of the fan base has gotten comfortable watching the games. TV rankings are up. Covid has changed certain areas more than others. The Giant fan base is more progressive than the Dodgers. It’s easy to look at the attendance drop as a simple issue that you describe but I believe it reflects the downturn of season ticket holders and the inability to make the public comfortable during this changing time.
I spoke to a friend last week that has lived just outside the city for almost 50 years and said she is disgusted by the collapse of the infrastructure. She said that she would go into city to eat and shop then the game. Now she is only going to the game. How many other people are looking at the day in San Francisco as not being what it use to be.

It makes zero sense to intentionally hit a guy leading off the inning, when the Giants, down by 4, weren’t totally out of the game. Plus there was no history of animosity.

Sometimes the ball just gets away from the pitcher. It’s the reason batters don’t mind the pitcher using pine tar for better control, even though it’s illegal.

Dodgers crowd the plate harder than most. Getting beaned comes with the territory and when they are playing as tight as they are against eachother, every base is vital to the game at hand and potentially the season ending standings for playoff matchup/home field adv.… grow up and read a book why dontcha.

“…watched the…Giants drop 2 of 3 against the ridiculously bad Pirates”

Wow. This season the Giants were 3-4 against the Bucs. But those mighty Padres were only 4-3. Only a total ignoramus would gloat over winning just one game more.

Bucs were also 3-4 against the Braves, and 4-3 against the Mets.

A’s ownership has been conning all 5000 A’s fans for about 2 decades. Enjoy another loss in the wildcard game.

Long term failure? He had him for a couple months and saved two games with catches. I’d say that was a sound investment.
Maybe a long time is different for you, because of the time chance and all.

Lofty statement from an organization that just got straight fleeced for a mediocre rental outfielder.

Yes, that 63-38 record is total flimflam and a mirage.

Sure. Let’s see Stanton play one inning in the outfield before we head to dream land.

He could probably hit in the top half of the lineup on Texas

Finally. I’ve seen little leaguers that hit better than Tauchman.

No you haven’t. Not against major league pitching at least. I’m sure if he is hitting against an 11 year old, Tauchman would hit somewhere around .750.

Had a nice five week stretch back in 2019. He’s fungible.

Cashman probably already on the phone to get him back lol. But I see a non contender picking him up and running with him the rest of the way to see if they can resurrect him.

He was ruined by the juiced balls in 2019. Hit a bunch of homes in limited ABs and then decided that he was a slugger. He needs to learn to slap the ball around the field and become a high OBP player instead of trying for homers.

Nobody was supposed to be talking about the Giants at this stage of the season. People have to remember this is a rebuilding team that has been in first place since the end of April. Not bad for a rebuilding team full of outcasts and “hasbeens “. They won’t falI. They have to be beaten. If I were Zaidi, I wouldn’t make any big trade. Just keep rebuilding while other teams are going crazy making trades out of desperation. Look at what Crawford said in an interview in the MLB app; “we have the best record in baseball. If we add, great. If we don’t, great “.
