Padres Place Fernando Tatis Jr, Chris Paddack On 10-Day IL

By Mark Polishuk | July 31, 2021 at 11:24pm CDT

11:24PM: Season-ending shoulder surgery “would be on the table” for Tatis if he doesn’t show improvement during his 10-day IL stint, Tinger told The Athletic’s Dennis Lin and other reporters.  However, Tatis is intent on playing again this year.

6:01PM: The Padres have placed shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and right-hander Chris Paddack on the 10-day injured list.  Tatis is on the IL with left shoulder inflammation, after leaving last night’s game with a shoulder problem following a slide into third base.  Paddack has been sidelined with a left oblique strain, and his placement is retroactive to July 28.

In corresponding moves, the Padres also optioned righty Nabil Crismatt to Triple-A while calling up right-handers Miguel Diaz and Reiss Knehr, and newly-acquired outfielder Jake Marisnick was added to the active roster.

This is the second time Tatis’ bothersome left shoulder has sent him to the injured list this season, as he suffered a slight labrum tear back in early April but ended up missing only a minimal amount of time.  Tatis has since missed a couple of games with mild shoulder soreness, but Padres manager Jayce Tingler told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune (Twitter links) and other reporters that Tatis’ shoulder was “more sore” in the aftermath of this injury than in his past shoulder aggravations.

According to Acee, there isn’t yet any indication that the Padres are considering shutting Tatis down in the wake of these recurring injuries.  If surgery is the only way to fully correct the problem, that would obviously sideline Tatis for the rest of this season and potentially into 2022, depending on the extent of the procedure and the severity of the shoulder damage.  The fact that Tatis has been able to bounce back multiple times this year and still produce at a superstar level provides some hope that he’ll also be able to recover from this latest setback, though it would seem to appear that Tatis will require more than just the minimum 10 days of recovery time.

There is no way to actually replace Tatis, of course, though San Diego’s acquisition of Adam Frazier last week now looks all the more important.  Jake Cronenworth can slide over to shortstop while Frazier takes over as planned at second base, but that scenario also interrupts the Padres’ initial plan — using Cronenworth at first base and Frazier as a super-utilityman around the diamond, providing cover for and depth behind Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers.  Ha-Seong Kim and Jurickson Profar are also on hand as utility options.

Losing Paddack is also no small matter for the Padres, who have been consistently hampered by rotation injuries all season.  San Diego was rumored to be looking at multiple starters prior to the trade deadline, but reliever Daniel Hudson ended up being their only new arm.  Paddack was scheduled to start on Sunday, but the Padres might now turn to Knehr or another option for tomorrow’s game.

Paddack has pitched better (3.92 SIERA) than his 5.13 ERA would indicate, though he has allowed a lot of hard contact.  Perhaps the key stat is 93 innings pitched, as Paddack has been a reliably durable member of the starting staff apart from a 10-day COVID absence early in the season.  The right-hander has a below-average strikeout rate but he has been one of the best at limiting free passes; Paddack’s walk rate is only five percent.

@GoYanks Such a pity. Hate the antics, but he’s an extraordinary player.

The Padres paid 8/270m for the dubious pleasure of locking down Tatis’s age 28-35 seasons, and he can’t even stay on the field at age 22. Couldn’t at 20, either. They made the splash they wanted, but the price may turn out to be intolerable.

Steve, from my view, I think Tatis is one of MLB’s very best overall talents. His enthusiasm, his incredible ability, and his 100 % “balls to the walls” style of play contributes to his greatness. And…..there is a fine line between playing your heart out ALL the time (even on a play in the first inning that didn’t need to happen) and playing smart in an effort to preserve your greatness over the course of your (hopefully) long career. The Friars need to help Fernando fine tune his decision making about where and when to go super hard and when to let off the throttle, even if only a small amount.

His shoulder clearly hasn’t healed and is extremely unstable. Every time his shoulder comes out of place it becomes more likely it will occur again. Each time this occurs, his labrum is at greater risk to tear off the socket. The only solution is surgery and it is going to happen eventually. What needs to be done eventually, needs to be done now. Tatis means too much to the Padres organization and MLB to proceed in any manner other than with extreme caution and w/ Tatis’ long term health in mind. Immediate surgery is the only path.

I wonder if SD and LAD would have made a truce preseason to both lay down arms if they knew how this season would unfold for both of them inj wise

There’s no doubt in my mind SD pressured LAD into Bauer …And vice versa Dodgers have more than pushed Preller

With the vibes Im feeling today Cinderella (SF) is going to the Ball and 1 of these 2 teams eliminated in 1 game – Ofc a 1 game series is one of the stupidest ideas in all of sports after 162 but that’s another subject altogether

I don’t think either teams firing soo many bullets for just 1 game – SF wasn’t even in sight preseason for both them as well; crazy year that’s going to end really really bitter for not only the one that loses that potential 1 WC game but all the assets they traded along the way for that 1 very game as well

    ?

If Cronenworth was going to first, how was Frazier going to back up Hosmer? Why plays 2B? Why would the leagues leading hitter be used as a backup?
I think Cronenworth and Frazier would have been the starters at 2B and LF. Whoever goes wherever.
If Hosmer had been traded, then Myers would have probably moved to 1B.

I had the labrum/ torn bicep tendon surgery when I was 21. That injury doesn’t get better on its own. I had it for 5 years and they finally did the surgery because I was about to get booted off my Dad’s insurance (not a prob anymore). Anyhow, it’s rough. The then orthopedic surgeon for the Raiders did mine and said since I wasn’t a pro athlete he was going to put it in tight. He said w/ athletes it’s kinda sketchy b/c it’s hard to tell where the sweet spot of not limiting the joint’s range of motion and locking it in solidly so the injury doesn’t re-occur. I have a restricted range of motion. I asked the Dr how the surgery would go and he told me I didn’t want to know. After reading the surgery report I know why he said that. They basically take your arm off, go in there with a Dremel smooth the ball and what they can behind labrum. Then they see the labrum back up and reattach your arm. They then anchor it by taking the biceps tendon and screwing it back into whatever the shoulder casing bone is called. That’s the easy part. The physical therapy is the real bitch as they have to rebuild your shoulder’s strength while not allowing it to rotate. Basically stretch the tendon back to close to where it used to be. That’s like the first 3-4 months then the rotational stuff starts. It’s not as bad but it still sucks balls. It’ll bite you every now and then and you’ll never again throw a frisbee pain free. Water skiing is out too. Anyhow, tldr; it’s not gonna get better w/o surgery and the surgery/ rehab sucks donkey balls. You’re on opioids for almost 6 months (before it was an epidemic at least).

They wouldn’t of been stupid enough to give him 340 mil

The fans wouldn’t have been stupid enough to give that money? Unless Chisox fans are a special breed, I very much disagree. Your average fan would hand mega deals out like candy.

Disagree all you want. We have an All Star shortstop and a first place team.

In consideration of their relative health, contracts, leadership on and off the field, I’ll take TA over Tatis without much thought at all. Tatis will NEVER play a full season of baseball. In fact, he’ll most likely be done long before his contract expires. TA, on the other hand, will age like a fine wine.

I don’t really disagree with your sentiment that the contract is a bad risk. But now you’re saying “NEVER”. You’re psychic now? You’re entitled to your opinion and its a valid one but you’re not psychic and you don’t speak for all White Sox fans.

Mostly spot on and the White Sox have TA7 at a tremendous contractual value. If the Sox had a brutal shortstop the pill would be more bitter.

Pads aren’t going anywhere this season regardless. Their rotation of Darvish and Snell simply isn’t good enough to get it done. Shut Tatis down now and save a potential career altering issue. He’s so young and talented. Take the L and have him sit out the season

This is not good for his career long term. I worry that this will keep happening until he can’t ply anymore. Kind of makes me think of Mickey Mantle, how he kept getting hurt and it ruined his career.

Tatis’ injury, if his season ends, means the Reds, Brewers or Cardinals will get the second wildcard

Cardinals? No. Maybe the Brewers or Reds though.

Reaching a little with the Cardinals, perhaps, but they have underperformed. The Reds had a bad start but have played well as of late. The Padres are currently in a funk anyway and a challenging schedule (Dodgers, Giants). The Reds schedule is soft

Tatis needs to take time to heal and not put the rest of his career in jeopardy. He is a young man, and probably could benefit from working to strengthen the joint rather then surgery.

I’ve read on Twitter that now the team is leaderless, but what about Machado, Hosmer, and most important, Tingler? They need to refocus the team and get back to winning games.

I wish him the best and a speedy recovery because he makes the NL West more competitive, and the better our division is, the easier it will be to take on the rest of the league in the playoffs.

Padres need to think about his future, rather than trying to nickel and dime his shoulder so he can play hurt.

Putting Tatis under the knife would give the Padres one hell of an excuse for why they didn’t close the gap and do better in the wildcard game (if they get to it).

I’m sure AJ Preller well think it would also help people forget that he failed to get a durable starter.

In the meantime, can somebody hire Pedro Martinez of ESPN to point out the differences between good Blake Snell and bad Blake Smell to that Larry Rothschild coach guy. Where is Darren Balsley when you need him?

At what point do Padres fans realize Chris Paddack might not be good after all? Or, are twenty starts three years ago when the team had no pressure still enough of a convincer?

I mentioned that Darvish was struggling, and some of them apoplectic and said it was a meaningless short sample. Their entire rotation is struggling now. Tatis would really hurt.

Contract extension way too early. Has not even played a full season yet. Solid when he is on the field but getting paid to stay home.
