Padres Willing To Exceed Luxury Tax At Trade Deadline

By Steve Adams | July 20, 2021 at 10:59pm CDT

It might have seemed silly a few years ago to suggest that the Padres would soon have to make any decisions regarding the luxury tax — San Diego only reached $100MM in total payroll once prior to the 2020 season — but the Friars now find themselves roughly $6MM from the $210MM luxury barrier. And while many teams who are so close to the tax line are loath to actually cross the threshold, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that Padres ownership is willing to make that concession as the trade deadline approaches.

Padres general manager A.J. Preller recently indicated that he’d like to upgrade his lineup in an effort to coax more consistent production out of the group, and the Padres have struggled to unexpected levels in the rotation. Blake Snell hasn’t pitched up to his previous standards, and the Friars are currently without Dinelson Lamet (forearm inflammation), Ryan Weathers (fractured ankle) and Adrian Morejon (Tommy John surgery). Last summer’s big-ticket acquisition, Mike Clevinger, underwent Tommy John surgery over the winter, so it’s been known for quite awhile that he wouldn’t be a factor in 2021.

The Padres have consistently been connected to Rangers slugger Joey Gallo, whom Preller knows quite well from his time as a Rangers assistant general manager. Gallo would be an upgrade in right field over Wil Myers, and since he’s controllable through the 2022 season, he’d be a multi-year improvement for the lineup. Gallo is hitting .233/.391/.510 and pacing MLB in total walks and walk percentage, and he’s been one of the game’s hottest hitters since early June: .282/.444/.748 in his past 133 plate appearances.

That said, Gallo himself wouldn’t take the Padres over the tax barrier, and he’s just one of multiple possibilities. Passan suggests more broadly that the Padres are open to adding a “significant” bat (Gallo included). Several others would fit that billing as well. The Marlins and Cubs are expected to trade Starling Marte and Kris Bryant before the trade deadline. The Mariners and the Orioles will be getting offers on Mitch Haniger and Trey Mancini, even if the preference for both clubs would be to hold onto them. If the Reds’ current slide continues, it’s at least feasible that they’d consider deals involving Nick Castellanos, who can opt out of his contract at season’s end.

Regardless of which bat the Padres zero in on, it’ll likely be one of multiple moves the Padres make, given their aggressive front office and the simultaneous need in the rotation.

As a rangers fan, I’d love to see some young arms come back in a return for Joey Gallo

If you’re trading Gallo, you need close to major league ready bats. You’ve assembled a nice rotation of arms in AA so you’re looking for offense for your best offensive player. Not sure who that would be. I know you can never have enough pitching but the outfield is where you need to build some depth. Have nice infielders like Jung Foscue and Huff (if he doesn’t catch).

I think the Rangers should just get the best package they can. If it means guys in the high minors, so be it. If it means guys in A ball with crazy upside, they should consider that to. This idea that they NEED major league ready bats is just a piss poor way of managing a rebuild. Don’t worry about positions, this can (and most likely will) be changed. Gallo was a 3B in the minors. Kiner-Falefa was a catcher. Aquire the most talent you can and then sort through it all once they are in a position to compete.

That’s fair and you make great points. You’re right about getting best available. I will correct you on one thing is that IKF was only catching to try to be more versatile and get some at bats. He was drafted as a SS and played that mostly in the minors.

I regret to inform you, I do not read bleacher nation and have no intention of ever going to bleacher nation nor commenting on the site. What you have encountered is yet another person who uses the same movie character as their profile pic.

I know shocking, unbelievable that someone on a baseball site may use a baseball character for their avatar.

I would suggest not getting too emotionally worked up about what any idiot, including me., says on an anonymous thread. It is clearly not good for your mental health.

@iang2424 bro the Rangers are in the early stages of a rebuild. Trading for major league ready anything would be counterproductive for them.

Why would the Yankees trade two young arms for Gallo, especially when the team needs a left-handed hitter and a centerfielder? Gallo doesn’t play centerfield and rightfield is occupied. Can he play left-field? I am not sure he’s worth it. I’d prefer Starling Marte’.

Gallo has played centerfield. With his arm and speed, he could essentially play any of the outfield positions.

It makes no difference, since there is not chance that Gallo goes that cheap. But why would you object to trade two non-prospects for an AS player with 1.5 years left?

@stevelieb- Gallo has played centerfield and so has Aaron Judge. So that wouldn’t really be a big problem. Gallo can also play left field. I would think Texas would have some interest in Domingo German and Clint Frazier also? Maybe the Yankees trade Gil or Vizcaino with those 2 players for Gallo. Seems pretty worth it to me.

The Yankees are 6th in the AL in Home Runs, 13th in Runs scored, and last in RBI’s. They don’t need a slugger they need someone who can get on base and hit more than just solo HR’s

Gallo has played 55 games in center – 38 games in 2019. He marks well but he’s not a centerfielder first. He’s a corner outfielder, predominately right. Gil is j ok r had been considered a solid prospect. I don’t think Frazier gets you much at this point. Maybe Andujar

Get a capable 4th OF LH bat- Kyle Calhoun

Get 1 or 2 rental starters
    Davies, Morton

Could ask the Cardinals about Yadier Molina to sure up the catching.
Or ask the Nationals about Yan Gomes.

Move Nola to a super utility role and ease him back.

Morton is not agreeing to go west. If the Braves are going to trade Morton it almost certainly have to be to an eastern team with a trip back to Houston probably being the farthest west he’d be willing to go.

Molina is not leaving St.Louis. Gomes could be realistic though.

Calhoun can’t stay healthy this year but could come cheap as the Diamondbacks just sell off everyone they can get anything for

Preller has made 5 trades with the Rays in his time as GM
Myers: I guess both the Rays and Padres lost that one. Why they even let the Nats get involved is anybody’s guess.
Ryan Schimpf for Deion Tansel: Inconsequential
Pham/Cronenworth for Renfroe/Edwards/Quiroz: Cronenworth’s breakout makes this one look really good for the Padres so far. Still have to see what Edwards and Quiroz do before declaring the Padres winners
Margot and Driscoll for Pagan: Padres lose this one
Snell: Padres REALLY lose this one

Padres will probably ultimately lose the Snell trade, but nothing they gave up is all that great, yet. Meija is performing as an average backup (likely not needed by Padres, although would have been useful this year with Nola injury). Patino has shown some good upside, but still too early to say he’ll be better than Snell. Wilcox and Hunt are so far away (both in A ball), that we won’t know for years who won this trade.

Patiño and Mejia have combined for more WAR than Snell in 2021. This means that the Rays actually won the trade so far. And this was supposed to be a win-now trade for the Padres and a win-later trade for the Rays.

Padres have already lost the Snell trade.

I guess my brain isn’t built like that. If Snell wins 2 Cy Youngs or how about even makes 2 all star games, are you still going to say that the Padres lost the trade?

Yeah, I know you’re going to say “it’s win-now time, baby, and he isn’t helping the Pads”. But forget this year. Could it be a win trade if Snell helps the Padres win the World Series a year or two from now? Or would it still be a bad trade because he “didn’t help the Padres win this very second”?

He doesn’t need to be better than Snell to make that trade look bad.

And where do you get that you need 3 years of WAR? WAR measures the performance for that year based on underlying numbers. Are you saying you need 3 years of those underlying numbers to accurately judge a player? I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with that, but when you’re just talking about their performance for a season it’s about as good as any other number to describe the single season performance (you could argue that defensive metrics may make it wonky for position players in a single year).

@Pads Fans Koamalu is you. You are also outinleftfield, BaseballisLife, YourDaddy and The Padfather.

YOU still have not atoned for lying about Luis Campusano’s charges being reduced to a misdemeanor in November, about having a realtor sister who sold Freddy Galvis a house in San Diego, about Shields for Tim Anderson being a “done deal,” about Nolan Arenado agreeing to waive his opt-out clause as part of a trade or about buying up a bunch of farmland from bankrupt farmers.

Like I said. If you don’t like WAR, pick another stat. It won’t reflect positively on Snell either.

Anyway, now that Koamalu appears to be banned, I imagine it is time for you to create another account. If you don’t want us to know it is you, my advice would be to drop your tired “Ryan” schtick and stop pretending to speak to insiders.

Jay Jaffe, Mitchel Lichtman, Tom Tango, and Dave Cameron have all said that WAR is not a valid comparative tool until you have 400-450 games played, 400+ IP for starters, and 150 appearances for relievers.

If you don’t understand what constitutes a small market you probably should not be commenting about it. 27th largest TV market. TV drives revenue in baseball with tickets and ballpark revenue making up 30% of the total. SD is a small market. They won’t get the competitive balance draft pick if they do exceed the CBT threshold.

So because you are willing to spend you are going to get penalized? If the Padres are willing to commit more revenue to the payroll then other teams. Theres no reason for them to lose their bonus picks. The picks are market based.

If anything small market teams like the Padres should be compensated draft picks if they actually do go out and spend.

It’s good for baseball for small market teams to go out and spend $$

Same for Rays, A’s, Pirates, etc.

By that same token if you have under say $90 mill payroll for 5 consecutive years you should be docked draft picks. Don’t need to sign guys to long term contracts but you can sign 1 year high AAV guys to at least put together a somewhat competent roster.

They can score runs. They don’t have the starting pitching to win it all though. They need to go in that direction. They should take a shot at Scherzer. The Nats aren’t going anywhere and probably would at least think about it. This move makes them legit.

Well, say what you will about Preller, but he’s rarely boring.

As a White Sox fan, I actually am a little jealous of the Padres. They still have a decent farm system, even if not what it once was, while the Sox’ system has very little in the way of appreciable depth. The talent at the major league level might swing slightly toward the Sox, but the Padres definitely have the best overall player between the two. What makes me jealous isn’t any of that, though; it’s that the Padres are aggressive and had so much farm depth that they built a terrific rotation while keeping most of their top prospects. Sox did great in getting extensions, but never had the wealth of prospect capital SD had to draw from.

      That endless bullpen…,,,

      Stamens ownership rights!

      Tatis

The way they run the bases

Saying all that, I still prefer the CWS model to Sd’s team building wise

….But yea Sd wins the pitching battle, has a strong pen, and has some capable arms in the rotation so it looks great…The ledger on the other hand….is probably near maxed out moving forward……but so is CWS nearly (after Lynn’s new upboot) … they are at all time highs currently

They will be 2 young fun teams to track over the next 3~5 years . I think White Sox have a longer rope but Sd has that get hot Oct its over feeling at the moment for them indeed

I love Joey…. but we need to send his a** to SD for a haul and a half. At this point, Abrams seems like a real possibility, and I swear Gore is almost to that point too. Though the Padres would be selling low on either of the aforementioned two, so the inclusion of either of them in a trade is something I doubt. Granted, if it were to happen, it would probably be Abrams coming to Texas since the Rangers have had a prospect crush on him for a while now.

We’ll see how it plays out, but I have my hopes up for a sky-high Gallo return.

Now you expect to get a top 10 prospect in mlb plus more from him? For Joey Gallo? I mean dare to dream but don’t hold your breath.

Only one elite prospect, but a ton of other prospects. In addition to Patino, Quantrill was top-50, Naylor fringy top-100, a 2nd rounder, 3rd rounder, Arias a #87, a 3rd rounder, a 3rd rounder, Lucchesi, a 2nd rounder, and a couple of other well-regarded kids.

I could’ve put that in better order, but SD gave a lot of pieces. Gallo won’t fetch Gore or Abrams, but if I were Texas, I’d be looking for 2-3 of the younger, well-regarded kids that the Cubs got.

Luis Urias was the #36 prospect in baseball in 2018. Do you think his value may have dropped a bit by the time he was traded in 2019? Yeah, and Quantrill was traded the year after. Quantrill wasn’t a top 50 prospect when he was traded, just like Fernando Tatis wasn’t the #2 prospect in baseball when the White Sox traded him.

He doesn’t have the back half of his farm system like he once did. The 20th prospect in SD could be top 10 on most other teams an offseason ago. That’s not the case anymore. They’re a top heavy system and let’s be honest, the top prospects he’s held onto haven’t had great years. Abrahams needed surgery. Gore has stunk it up again so much they won’t call him up even though they need pitching. Capusano still hasn’t proven to be an MLB regular. That prospect sheen is starting to wear on some of them..

Gallo should command a solid return package, especially with how good he has been over the past six weeks, but I think deep down you know that there is no way in Hell the Rangers get those types of prospects for him.

Preller has made terrific trades for SP but they’ve blown up in his face. Bad luck, karma, poor medical-record scrutiny, I’ve heard all of that. You know he’ll keep trying until his “hot talent lava” stream runs cold. Good. His moves are interesting.

Most observers felt Blake Snell would not turn into Skinny Pete. Clevinger could have led the 3 Aces. Darvish can’t stay upright, which at this point in his career was unanticipated. Dinelson Lamet has the talent to lead any team. Musgrove left a wee bit of his arm on the hill during his no-hitter.

Preller makes great gets that haven’t panned out. But he and his boss each have a robust pair, so this is not the main roster going forward. Both of them are absolutely, definitely going for it.

Getting Darvish, Clevinger, and Snell just feels like an all-in move at a really high level. Considering that talent surrendered, those three have a combined 10-6 with a 3.97. I think Davies & Quantrill have a 7-8 with 4.23. Just imho, but it feels like SD is giving a a lot of prospects to get a little bit better, and also adding a lot of payroll.

If you bother to check you will notice that both Musgrove and Darvish have superior numbers to Jose Berrios. Jose Berrios is expected to demand a huge haul this year yet somehow Darvish and Musgrove are trades that haven’t panned out? No top 100 prospects for either one. Do you think trading for Berrios will cost more? I do.

      Darvish: 3.09-ERA, 1.00-WHIP, 105-IP
      Musgrove: 3.14-ERA, 1.00-WHIP, 103.1-IP
      Berrios: 3.16-ERA, 1.08-WHIP, 114.3-IP

It’s too early to tell on either of those trades. Lucchesi has a 2.28 over his last 7 games. Bednar has a 2.92. And three other prospects, primarily Head were moved. I’m not sure this will look good at the end of the two years that SD has Musgrove.

Same with Darvish. The Cubs got a 40+ FV, a 45, a 50 and a 40+. And Davies, a decent #3/4. One more injury by Darvish and that trade could be a disaster.

“Most observers felt Blake Snell would not turn into Skinny Pete.” – There were quite a few people, at least on here, that pointed out the real question marks with Snell.

“Clevinger could have led the 3 Aces.” – You’re using “Aces” pretty liberally here, but sure.

“Darvish can’t stay upright, which at this point in his career was unanticipated.” – Darvish is still having a good year, but there is a reason the Cubs traded him when they did. Injuries shouldn’t have been too surprising and him not repeating what he did over last years’ 12 starts shouldn’t either. He was on pace for something like an 8 win season, I’ll bet against that for pretty much any pitcher on a year to year basis.

I’m not complaining. I was the first guy, two years ago, that said Darvish was still a good pitcher, when everyone else was talking about how bad his contract was. He had a bad start to 2019, but had an insane K/W in the 2nd half.

          Now he is struggling.

This is not complaining. This is simply telling you what his BR numbers are. If you don’t think the numbers are meaningful it is okay to ignore them. But those are what his numbers are.

You could be correct. Players get hot and cold. IMO, when older pitchers hit a rough patch, it is a more serious issue than when a younger pitcher hits a rough patch. He’s almost 35. so it is fairly remarkable that he’s pitched as well as he has.

Maybe another way to think about it is, I think we can all acknowledge that he will hit a wall and decline. The question is, when will he hit the wall, and how will we know that he is in decline. If there is a signal for a decline. would a 9-game stretch not be it?

It feels like Preller built one of the all-time great farms, and is now frittering it away. A couple of years ago, when Betts was on the block, I mentioned that SD might’ve had 15 50 FV prospects compared to the RS with maybe 3.

It feels like SD just got a lot more expensive, a lot thinner, but not a lot better.

I understand that, on a one-off basis. What I object to is trading for Darvish, Clevinger, Musgrove, and Snell, in short order. It’s almost like they wanted to overwhelm MLB, at all costs. The Pods farm is a lot stronger than the RS, but it feels like the RS trading their top ten prospects for a 2-3 window. With the Pods farm, it felt like it should be a ten year window.

Brady is correct, padres cleared out bottom minors and sure while the overall is still nice the window has closed to the next 3/4 years as opposed to what could have been an 10 year window. Padres are already expensive and will get more expensive when players like cronenworth and Grisham, snell, clevinger lamet expect to get paid. Hope the couple years is worth it

Sorry to tell you, but the Padres have an owner who wants to win now. The days of the penny pinching cellar dwelling Padres are over. Preller is one of the best scouting GM’s in the game. Tatis signed a 14 year contract. You really think they won’t try to put a winning team around the most marketable player in the game? Lol get used to it my guy.

Better go after Marte, Myers and Hosmer play 1B, you will get a guy with speed , power and won’t have to give up the farm for him then maybe get an extension, or if you want to make it a bigger deal trade Paddack, campusano + for marte and one of Alcantara/Lopez, after that just get a guy like pineda or Danny Duffy.

It’s going to have to be a significant return to pull Gallo away from Texas. Man wants to stay here and he’s good and young enough to be the face of our next run. Not expecting SD, or anyone else, to actually give up enough to entice Texas.

Gallo has no say in that matter. At least not for another year-and-a-half. It would be nice to see the Rangers trade him then bring him back just so people will stop saying that that is impossible.

Spending does not equal winning. It’s a very naive viewpoint to think otherwise. It’s not about the luxury tax, it’s that payrolls in excess of 200 million do more to bog a team down and kill future flexibility than they do help winning. Spending smart is smart. You are advocating spending for the sake of spending. That’s dumb. Having a budget isn’t being cheap, it’s a smart way to sustain success… then there’s the little matter of teams being businesses that can’t survive in the red. Y’know, a little thing called not losing money. What good does a third place team with a huge payroll running into debt do? Cuz that’s all your plan will achieve, lordd99. To win you need a plan a bit more thought out than, spend all duh moneez!

All I know is don’t trade CJ Abrams, he is the perfect fit for the Padres with his speed and contact ability. Abrams, Tatis, Cronenworth, Grisham are the core of the future Padres (and hopefully add Campusano to that list). Hopefully Lamet, Gore and Weathers get things together and form the future of our pitching staff, but that’s currently trending in the wrong direction.

Just gonna throw this out there. The Rangers and their fans want a ton for Gallo the strikeout machine. Yes he has light tower power when he connects but he strikes out so much that the times he does connect for solo home runs you will probably miss it because it won’t be in big spots with runners on. Yes he is above average defensively but I have another name for the Padres.
Here me out everyone because your gonna accuse me of ignorance and tom foolery.

Giancarlo Michael Stanton is owed approx $150 after this season with a cap hit at $23 mil per. He use to be a solid RF until became a Yankee and Judge blocked him. Now the dumb dumb Yanks are afraid to put him in the field because they are afraid he may get hurt.
The Yanks would have to convince him to waive his no trade and go back to his west coast roots to a winning team and also send Luke Voit in the deal and the Padres send Eric Hosmer to the Yanks.

I think the time for teams to make a move like that was during the 19-20 offseason before the pandemic began. Preller was desperate to move Myers then. Now, I think he probably lets a team have him if they are willing to take the whole contract but isn’t going to eat significant $ or attach significant prospects to do it.

Myers is tearing the cover off the ball right now (.311/.407/.622/1.030 in July) and only has one more season left on his deal. Why would including him in a deal increase the quality/number of prospects going along with him?

His track record and exorbitant salary (even for just one year) is the reason why that would happen Koamalu. I’m not saying it actually WILL though. As Preller likely values Myers more than other teams.

Not sure they will resign Pham but his 300+ BA, OBP of 390 and OPS .890 since midMay, along with being on pace for 20 hrs 25 SBs is a bargain for his salary. Plenty of teams can use that.

Can someone explain why Gallo is so sought after ? Sure he walks and hits HR’s, but a 210 or so career BA who strikes out roughly 35% of the time ? Is he really worth a haul of prospects ? What am I missing here ?

New age fans don’t acknowledge batting average as a valid measuring tool. Gallo leads the league in walks which has good value and plays decent OF defense. A good player to be sure. Would rather watch a pitcher attempt to hit than any of these 3 true outcomes players. They’re so boring

A .230 hitter, career ..212 still only gets 23 hits for every 100 at bats…..walks are nice but this guy isn’t paid to walk, he’s paid to hit and hit for power which he does all too infrequently as pointed out but his .230 BA.

That’s a high value metric as it tells you how many hits per 100 at bats a player gets. So contrary to what you think, its still the top metric when assessing a player.

He’s over hyped, he’s just another Dave Kingman like someone just mentioned, its either a home run or bust for him, there are a bushel of those players around the league earning a lot less then what he’s making. Clearly not a difference maker, however a player like Castellanos is considered an impact bat to add to the Padres lineup.

The Padres could really use Castellanos right now, he would be the bat to pry if they can from the Reds. His bat would energize the rest of the lineup….Gallo is a nice bat but he’s inconsistent at best, that type of bat won’t move the needle. Marte would be an option and is in his walk year, but Castellanos is the difference maker here.

Trade Castellanos??…when he’s injured and signed for 2 more years , albeit with opt out clauses , but Castellanos himself has said on multiple occasions he’d prefer to stay in Cincinnati!!
So just because he is “only” signed for around $17 m…doesn’t mean jack squat!
Even if he does opt out, it doesn’t mean they couldn’t re-sign him so why give up on him when they’re in 2nd place in the division and 3rd in the Wild Card race with Milwaukee’s easier part of the schedule coming to an end and not having to face the Reds again for over a month after just going 4-3 against the Reds in a 7 game back to back series….which proved the Reds can bang with them even withh by out Lorenzo, Senzel, Moustakas and Hoffman and great call up pieces from the minors in September! (Lodolo, Greene, the former Jose Garcia (name change) among others.
Trade Castellanos while in 2nd place in the division and 3rd in the Wild Card…
He said the Reds signed him later in the free agency period when he didn’t feel wanted by any other team and that he has developed some great relationships with other players and management!!

If Castellanos doesn’t opt out it’s because no one is willing to pay him more money, not because he wants to stay in Cincy. Casual fans will talk about players opting in because they like the org they are with all day but in the end it always comes down to $.
